change style <say, talk, shout, whisper, walk etc> <

With so many new changes, and personalizations available, could I suggest a command to set/change styles for your PC, for various different in-game commands.

I suggest a command : change style <parameter> <text>
For example:

change style talk in a gruff tone
-would set my PC's talking style "in a gruff tone" permanently (or until changed).
i.e. whenever he used the "talk" command, the others at the table would see:
At your table, <XYZ> says, in a gruff tone:
   "My name's XYZ."

This is mainly to allow players to personalize their actions, for their PC, to follow a theme, for the entire duration of their PC life. There's lots of times I think, when I create a new PC -- hey, this dude's gonna have a hoarse whisper of a tone, but I never get around to actually emoting it everytime I use "say" or "talk", coz after a while it gets tedious to type it out repeatedly. This would solve that problem and allow PCs to have a consistent style (if the player so wishes), throughout the duration of their lives.

Other arguments for the change style command could be (but not restricted to) :-
walk
talk
say
shout
whisper
sit
stand
run
eat
drink

I would like to see this. I've had characters where I had problems like this. The bard always talked in a soft, smooth voice because it changed when she sang, but no way in krath was I typing out "in a soft, smooth voice" every time I spoke.
...so instead of stealing an uneaten one, like a normal person, I decided I wanted the one already in her mouth."

If I have to watch QUIETLY and SOFTLY and IN A HOARSE TONE scroll forever up my screen, while I am attempting to think of ways to give my pcs personality without relying on a repeated script, I will not quit, but I will bitch about it for all eternity.

Instead of repeating yourself repeating yourself, think up new and exciting ways to QUIETLY speak to your readers.  And give us some credit.  Like we won't realize, if we saw your couple of references to a gruff voice cease to make way for more interesting emotes, such as what you're doing with your hand or your facial expressions, that you're suddenly...not speaking gruffly anymore?

No. No.  In summary, no.  I protest.  This idea has come up before, and I heartily detested it then.  I will heartily detest it now, and I will detest it in the future, forevermore, amen.

So far she has eluded my attempts to capture her and add her to my harem.. but one day, one day...

Unless others arrive that didn't see "how" your voice sounded...they won't know. And they should.
I'm for something like this, especially considering most people don't bother to describe the sound of their pc's voice anyway.

I personally find it annoying when I see...

The man says in sirihish, softly:
   "Something something."

The man says in sirihish, softly:
   "Something else, something-something..."

The man says in sirihish, softly:
   "Something different, bla-bla something!"

Like Laura said, I'd much rather see something a little different, you can alternate a bit and if you regularly let people know how you speak, you don't have to remind them - using the exact same words - with every line. Do something different, give us a little variety, and if you absolutely must speak in the exact same tone always, get zMUD and do an alias.

PLEASE DO NOT DO THIS.  You can use variety!  YOU CAN DO IT! I believe in you!

Hey, I'm not doing it :P I was just saying that an alias in zMUD can do what that guy wanted coded help with.

I know, Hymwen.  I was speaking to everyone.  EVERYONE!  For the common good of man.

Harshlands and SOI have this script, don't they?
Child, child, if you come to this doomed house, what is to save you?

A voice whispers, "Read the tales upon the walls."

Yeah, they do, and I got tired of seeing people walking their entire lives "with long, steady strides" or seeing "someone says, in a soft soothing tone: PLEASE HELP ME THERE'S A DEMON CHASING ME OMG!!1"

No clue if Harshlands and SOI have a similar script, frankly.

And I do agree that repetitions are monotonous and can get annoying.

But at the same time, there'd be no force for anyone to use this sort of a command to customise their pc, if they wanted to vary each of their emotes/actions manually.

But for those PCs born with life-long afflictions like maybe a lisp or a limp -- something which might not go away however much other players might OOCLY hate seeing repeated -- this might be a suitable option to typing out their action customizations everytime.

A simple solution:
The style is ONLY applied if the action is used without any arguments.

So, for example, if I've set my "say" style to "softly":
And I put in the command : Say Hello
You'd see: XYZ says, softly "Hello".

But if I used the command : Say (with a naughty twinkle in his eyes) Hello
You'd see: XYZ says, with a naughty twinkle in his eyes "Hello".

i.e. What I mean is, the style would be applied ONLY to those actions which are used WITHOUT any extra embellishments -- I hope I was able to explain myself there :)

Persons wishing to use variety (even if they have already set certain action styles) could do so, without disturbing their style settings.

Also, its not necessary that people need to use this permanently. A person who's injured temporarily might use some customization to show he's limping and bleeding for a few IC hours, while he walks around from his hunting grounds to a resting place, or someone who's just smoked spice might use a "drawl" in his voice for a few IC hours till his head's cleared up.....

I agree with LM. It has to be something done when you first meet a person, and on an ongoing basis by the player, as code would simly desensitize us to this element of a character.

What happens when you're speaking in a smooth melodious voice and the evil sekrit magicker you're talking to grows horns and tries to eat your head. Will your screams still be smooth and melodious?

My point is while you might have smooth melodious voice or a raspy voice, that's a sound quality not a style. If this were restricted to descriptions that only denote sound quality it might not deteriorate into ludicrious, but I think some might still find it monotonous.

This makes me want to use the same ones repeatedly just to annoy people.

I personally find it much worse when people -never- describe those sorts of things about their pc and would rather see the repitition of -something- rather than the repitition of -nothing-.

What's worse the repitition of color or the repetition of black and white?

Yeah, I agree with the dissenters. Add variety. It's fine if your character speaks "softly": just think of a couple different ways for him to do it, yeah?

I'm with LM and Delirium.  No, and a thousand more times no.  I use some macros for movement, but there are reasons I do.  If you want full explanation, ask.  However, this idea...setting this up for sitting and standing, speaking, eating, drinking and etc...no thanks.  Most people only see me for a room or so, maybe two move emotes with my macros...but when I'm talking to someone?  I mean, this'd only encourage people to be lazy and not think about what else their characters could be doing besides being quiet or soft or gruff or hoarse.
