Tails

Didn't know where to put this, but, um. I digress.

I just finished showing my friend a log of Arma, and she..wants to play. >_>; So, after pointing her to the Character helpfile, and a little bit of banter, I was sent here with this question:

Would a tailed human require a special ap?

Nope.  A tail mutation is fine for a normal app.  Don't expect any coded 3rd hand or tail attack advantages, though.

Just remember that as a mutant she may be discriminated against.

Or just killed if she is from the south.

Arm is evil.  And I love it.  It's like the softest, cuddliest, happy smelling teddy bear in the world, except it is stuffed with meth needles that inject you everytime

Just make sure she isn't trying to make a "furry" character.

Heh..she just said "Furry Haters >:[" to that.

Thanks.

Actually, in the North, a 'furry' character would be ok, as long as it is realized that it's not really a furry race, but either an elf or human. Many of the mutants there resemble furry characters.

Let's not mislead new players, even in the name of humor.

While yes, discrimination against mutants is harsher in the south than in the north, they aren't killed on sight.

You could, but I -really- wouldn't reccommend it for a player's very first character.

I didn't say she would be killed on sight. Mutants helped liberate Tuluk.
She may not be killed in the south, but she might also, just for being a mutant with a tail.

Mutants are a common sight in most locations, and it's unlikely that a person would be killed for their deformities.

Are you aware of just how many mutant npcs are actually in Allanak?

No one is going to kill you just for being a mutant, but they may believe
you're a magicker or magickally warped, since that's Tuluk and Allanak
both associate mutations with.

I know.. Ok. Fine. Alright. She wont be killed just for having a tail, but if she starts meowing or barking, that is bad. Very bad.

There are four armed men in Allanak, a tail wouldnt suprise anyone. That's actually a food for thought, if get my character out there and attack a four armed man, will he pull 4 scimitars on him and chop my chara to bits?

Recommend that she chooses a more typical concept for her first character, you'll be doing her a huge favor.

Also, since her first character is probably going to be killed rather quickly, tail or no, if she really likes this particular mutation concept, it would be wise for her to save it until she has a better grasp of the game and can make it last.

Hey, if she wants to try it, she can feel free.  Tell her not to expect a warm reception, though.  A mutant is one thing, but furry is another.

Yeah, if she wants to experience the 'harshness' we are so famed for, there's no better way to break in...

If 'the horned elven woman' isn't a typo (horny elven woman) I can quickly remember at least one mutant in Allanak. She's not gemmed, too.

Furries have no place in Armageddon.

There is -no- furry race, there is no community for furries to have love-fests of sex and such, and anything you play with a tail will have been discriminted against since it was born.  It is even possible, and probable that it keeps the tail hidden, to hide its shame.

Armageddon is not nice and fluffy.  Armageddon is not going to be an environment your stereotypical internet fuzzhead wants to be in.  And being a mutant opens you up to close-mindedness, anger, discrimination, hatred from authorities, and commoners.. And is generally something that is added to force a boring concept that you have to have more depth through angst.. At least from what I've seen.

Mutations can be great fun.  But please -please- realize what you're getting into, and don't expect to constantly show off your 'super keen tail! isn't it cute?!'  You will be treated badly because of it, and that -will- be IC.

Also, a -lot- of people hate furries.  Furries are strange, generally crazy in other ways besides wanting to have sex with semi-animals, and are one of the most reviled ideas on the internet to date.  German shit-eating porn sites are reguarded with less distaste than a furry outpost on the internet today.  I, personally, have no problem with furries, whatever.. thats your deal, weird to me but I'm accepting..  But know that, as hard as people try, OOC distaste can and will bleed over IC..  And, because people aren't imaginative, there will be insults that furries have seen thrown at them IRL appearing in game..  So, it might offend you if you have that kind of personality.

Disclaimer:  No part of my post was intended to flame, I am 100% behind you if you want to play a realistic character with a tail..  But the keyword there is -realistic- for the game world.  Also, I wanted to make sure this -is- the game that you wanted to play.  Its harsh, mean, and the characters in game are complete fuck-knobby assholes.  If you want to play a neat fluffy fun fun furry, play Furcadia.  If you want to be reviled, hated, and kicked around because you had the MISFORTUNE of being born with a tail.. By all means.. come to Armageddon.

I would qualify this a little, harsh, mean yes... but this implies that -all- the characters are "fuck-knobby assholes".  This is a world of deep shades of grey, many, many characters are assholes, but not all.  This is an important distinction, lets not alienate potential players. Let them play and draw their own conclusions.

Even in Tuluk I suspect general mutations are not necessarily acceptable.

Quote from: "Help City Tuluk"In the year 1516, the Sun Legions emerged from the Ivory Pyramid to wage a surprise attack on the Allanaki Army occupying the Gol Krathu region. Assisted by the Rebellion, various human tribes of unknown origins, and hordes of hideously mutated and deformed creatures,

These aren't just run of the mill mutants, they were hordes that arrived together.  They weren't there before the liberation, and they were there after.  A generic blue-skinned, six-fingered fellow won't necessarily get props for being one of them, because he isn't one of them.  Ah, excellent, this is in the general docs:
http://www.armageddon.org/general/mutant.html
QuoteMutations abound on the surface of Zalanthas, and many have gone so far as to become species in and of their own right, such as the deadly psionic gaj, the Thryzn who assisted in freeing the north,

It wasn't mutants in general who assisted in liberating Tuluk, it was the specific mutants known as Thryzn, and PCs aren't allowed to play Thryzn.  They are really freakish mutants, so their existence might make regular mutants less shocking.

Mutations in general are supposed to be more common near the Sea of Silt.  There are probably more ordinary sorts of mutants in Allanak, Red Storm and Red Storm East than in Tuluk.

Anyway, if your buddy wants a tail or other mutation, point her toward the mutant doc, since it contains some stuff a mutant would probably have learned during her life.    http://www.armageddon.org/general/mutant.html

I say let the girl do what she wants she will learn the hardway, or some people will dig it.

But I think it's important to specify to her that this is Armageddon not anime, furry bubblegum land but at the same time this is Armageddon and the great thing about is there is wide open space for creativity.

Let her play the character she wants as she long as she plays the character true to the personality she creates for it, if that makes sense.  We all play and enjoy the game for different reasons, let her find her own.

Well, frankly I see nothing wrong with a mutation of a tail, it's rather small compared to some of the shit I've seen.  No need to go Jihad Sir Dealot, even if she's a furry, if it's what she wants to play let her.  Do realize there will be consequences wherever you play.  'nak yeah you'll probably get spit all over, or even worse killed, the further north you go the more accepting people tend to be.  This does not mean however that northies are accepting of mutations either, just more tolerant in general.  As far as redstorm goes, never played there,  and I wouldn't suggest there for a new player anyway.  But yeah, I mean as far as welcomings go, don't expect a warm one, not many people receive those anyway.  I've met fairly few people in my playing time that didn't blow off 2-3 characters before they got in the mindset of gameplay.  Hell I blew seven before I even got a clue.

In defense of master Diealot, his overall post was well written and obviously well intentioned.  I have no problem with the post with the exception of one small generalization that could be misread by a newbie.  I saw no attack on the person.
