Forage

Is there any possibility of expanding the forage code to allow you to look for certain things by keyword? Like.. say I'm hunting diamonds.. my character is thinking "Diamonds, diamonds.." Why would he pick up that crappy piece of sandstone?

I think this would be very cool if the forage command could be adjusted based on keywords. It's obvious that certain material types are already much rarer then others, which explains why you'll get 50 chunks of yellow sandstone before you get x, a rarer item. So theoretically, you could search for months in a certain spot for diamonds and never find one, but it'll keep you from picking up a billion pieces of crap in the process.

He'd pick it up to get it out of the way I guess. I agree this would be nice, but some randomness is needed. Besides, if you always "forage gold" and never got anything, you'd probably get sick and email the imms yelling at them.

Gold prospecters in the past RL didn't email the imms. They kept digging, until they decided it just wasn't gonna happen. For all they knew, it could have been the very next shovelful down. This seems more realistic to me.. sure you could throw in your average "forage rocks" to see if there's stone in the area, and maybe see what you can get.. but you should -also- be able to specify a keyword. So if there's "a purplish salt crystal" that could possibly be found, forage purplish will bring that up, but NOT bring up a purplish amethyst crystal if those are not to be found in that room.

Gold prospectors didn't have players that want to accomplish something in their prospectors lifetimes. That I know of.

I think the forage code is fine the way it is.  If you're looking for a specific item, then just junk every other item you find if you don't want it.  That you way you still have a chance to change your mind if while you're looking for chunks of granite you notice a big fat hunk of steel.

I'd like the opposite:  Forage All.

With forage all your chance of finding something on each attempt would go up slightly, but it could be anything that is found in that area:  diamonds or twigs, salt crystals or amethyst crystals, whatever.  If I'm digging for roots I might still notice that chunk of amber I had to move out of the way.

But weren't they pretty much still having to go through the dirt and rock above it, and tossing it aside via shovel?  Same thing.  If you're specifically looking for diamonds, you have to type forage rock.  The other junk you get you can just assume you're shoving out of the way to get down to the diamonds.
