Old school Armagger here from mid 90's

Started by LargeElvenJunk, March 19, 2006, 04:00:37 PM

If Armag was out in the 80's I could have come back all retro with a mullet and stuff. Oh, wait, I am in wearing flannel and listening to Pearl Jam / Nirvana, or maybe not. Anyway, I played Armag from around 1995 to about 97/98 and stopped playing when I graduated from college and focused on being a mature, responsible adult! I was at either the first or second Arm players meeting too. It was in Iowa, I seem to recall at a school campus, and a rousing good time was had. While vacationing in Md one year, I met a guy and hung out with him and his wife. Very happy memories. Anyway, it was great to see Armag still alive and prospering! I remember the times of 30-35 players being an awesome night. I logged in and saw 75 the other night!!! WOW!!! Nice to see Arm has a little niche with all the graphically based games out there. I must say, the changes in the game since I last played are just astounding. Arm was a cool game then for its realism, but the staff seem to have outdone themselves. Anyway, hello again everyone, any other mid 90's peeps here?

One right here.

Oh the stories from those days.... :)

We want to hear the stories!

No you don't.

But, as a tasty morsel, there was this dwarf.  He spoke like a pirate and thumbed his nose.  Within months almost every dwarf spoke like a pirate.

We called them the Ironsword Pirates.  Yaaaarrrrr.

I <3 Ironsword.

Brings a tear to my eye to see other oldies around *sniff, sniff* It was kind of wierd seeing the "bug" again after all these years. For both reasons.  :P

Started playing in 1994. Enjoyed having an ale at flint's with some strange characters.

So.... a templar, a halfling and a mantis walk into a bar...

Ouch.

Started right about when you left.  98.

Started in 94, for about half a year.  Stopped when I finished college.  Started again in grad school a few years ago.

Mid-nineties for me too.  I think that if you ever had the option to play a mantis you should be considered an old-timer.  :-D That or arm-wrestled that peg-legged mul in Flint's.

What is Flint's? Some bar, or what?

WHOA! There are no PC Mantis anymore??? You cannot choose to be one with enough karma or something??? I played _ONE_ PC mantis, but I forget my name and/or desc. There was a BAD ASS white shelled PC mantis back in the day. He owned everyone. He used to walk down to Nak and kill stuff. lol

Mantis, Halflings and Gith are all closed to PCs.   :(   But if you can get a couple hundred of your closest friends to play they may be re-opened!

What about PC's from some exotic mating like a the offspring of a Scrab/Beetle lovefest!!! I could make an awesome Scrabeetle!!!! I seem to recall an occasional allowance of a PC Gith, but I dont recall them having their own PC clan per se, I do remember a thriving Halfling and Mantis PC clan though. Kind of sad they went by the way side. There used to be all those mentioned PC's, and then Gypsies, Black Moon, Black Wing, the Guild, and I am sure I am forgetting some things.

Yep, started in '98 as a giggling high school girl, left for a few years when in college.. could have logged in, parties were more important that 'Geddon and homework. Graduated somehow.. came back when I moved to a boring somewhere in the Midwest. I think it's the midwest..    Now, I play when I can.

I made my first pc in 95-96

But I was never part of the in crowd. :)

Did the soldiers burst in while you were there?

I've been playing off and on since the 7th grade which was uh... geeze, 1992 I think :)  I'm also amazed and grateful for how far the game has come since then.

Ya'll remember the inventory bug that forced you to put everything in your backpack back in your backpack every time you logged in.  God, I miss those days.

Ah, the old days.  Doomsbringers and the Archmagi.  Levels.  Experience.
Quadyana and the Balzed Star.  Delver.  DM.  Warlocks.  Shadowdancers.

My favorite were the wagons, drawn by huge lizards that you commanded from inside the wagon.  I recall one day in particular when I discovered that not only could you order the lizard to talk, you could order it to tank and it was a cleric class, so I could even order it to 'cure serious wounds' on itself.

I always chuckled when I visualized this:

Stone Road [EWS]

The long, wooden wagon has arrived from the south, pulled by a giant lizard.

Stone Road [EWS]
A long , wooden wagon is here, pulled by a giant lizard.

A giant lizard says, "Get in."

Anyhow, how far the MUD has come since those days.  It will be interested to see how it progresses in the next few years.

I just remember Azroen being amazingly easy going. I'll never forget him. Ever.

Not only did I forget to move one room into the garden to do my spam casting, thus precipitating the soldiers running in and hauling my skinny little elf to jail, I remember removing all and dropping it as they subdued me in the wagon room.  Several hours later, come back and get all the stuff they would have taken.

Ah yes, very very different.  In a good way.
Evolution ends when stupidity is no longer fatal."

Hey all, I just pulled up the website when a discussion of MUDs sprang up on a MMORPG guild site that I frequent (World of Warcraft).  I thought about nearly failing out my freshmen year mostly because of Armageddon (partially because of ISCABBS and the rash of blind dates that sprang up from the coeds I ran into from various midwest schools! lol).

Then I saw Morg's name... wow, old times, old, good memories.

I played back in 1992-94... played a thief/assassin that for the life of me I can't recall the name.. but I started a small in-game organization called 'The Net' and then got killed in the sewers of Nak by Sunjak, elf assassin.  God, I can't believe I remember this stuff...

I then rolled up Carline Syx, a female warrior/thief type character who hid her roguish side and tried, and succeeded in getting into a Naki noble house before getting killed in some massive templar based drama.  I then switched over to my last character before transferring colleges and setting myself on a new life path... and played Lassiter, a blue templar... man, torture... magic... interaction with the red templars... what an awesome game.

I've taken up graphical MMOs in the recent past, have had a bunch of fun playing, but never found the true emersion into character and world development that Arma allowed.

Morg if you read this, hello from Binabik!

i>...I look at my daughter and I believe...

I was at an Iowa City players meeting in around 1997? I started playing in 1995 and one of my first characters was an Ironsword. The gith came after you between 1999-2001.  I think you'll find Tuluk has changed slightly. Good to have you back.

-Williamson
"Let sleeping characters sleep naked." -Azroen

Hey I played in 94-96.  Played a elven warrior out of Tuluk.  Won one of the contests there.  I remember it was held somewhere in the old part of Tuluk, where there was like a room with a sparring pit kind of stuff.

Good times, we used ta have matnis pcs attacking Tuluk all the time.  Did all kinds of crazy stuff back then (i am sorry but it just wasnt as RP strict then).

Attacked the Hafling village !  I remember some pcs like Takryn (Sun Bronzed Swordsman).  Heh cant see a sdesc like that getting approved these days.  There were a couple of pcs like Takryn, and one other PC, who worked around with full bronze and steel swords.

Blackwing were pretty active then too.  Amazing, how with more PCs on, we seem to have far less options for playing these days.

I started in 95, I believe.

I remember you could still tell what damage you did when you hit things when I first started playing...

And enterable items were buggy as shit.

That is pretty funny.

Well... I was here when Bella was around. Dunno when that was.

That was just three Pcs ago, for me. Mmm. Bela.

Arm is evil.  And I love it.  It's like the softest, cuddliest, happy smelling teddy bear in the world, except it is stuffed with meth needles that inject you everytime

Takryn and Tascha (pockets) - the mega sparring couple who lived in their wagon in the desert.  Because every time the mud would reboot, wagons would repop back at the city.

Sounding like old times...a few things...

I started in the heyday of the Ironsword Clan, late 93 or early 94.   remember Zaerach, who my dwarf Kritos rescued from gith in a raid.

I don't remember levels, but I remember seeing our skill stats.

I remember buying potion fruits in the Allanak bazaar.

I remember fighting blackmoon raiders along the north road.

I remember that halfling elementalist, just not his name.

I remember no karma.

I remember helping Morgenes and Binabik on Aldara.

I remember the hacked version of Arm and even coding on it until I found out how it was stolen.

I remember Sunjar the elven assasin.

I remember stealing spice in a warehouse in Luirs.

I remember pleading with Kurac for my life before Takryn.

I remember Mal Krian.

I remember Ashina, she who killed my Carleone.

I remember Arm being down for a long, long time due to Israeli hacking.

I remember the sneering half-giant.

I remember ISCA.

I remember Lawrence losing out to Gerrol in voting for best looking male.  Come on!

I remember Lawrence vs Garrick, thanks Trev!

I remember no kids, no wife, and playing all the time.

I remember corrupting students at my school by introducing them to Arm.

I remember being a gith.

I remember oh so much more...

Quote from: "Ritley"Well... I was here when Bella was around. Dunno when that was.

That wasn't that long ago.  Two years, maybe.

I remember Sunjar the elven assasin.

Back when the whole point was to be an asshole and dare people to kill you, then just be harder to kill than they thought.

I remember playing a mantis and chittering at people.

I remember when the guild was started.

I remember when Bill played a Vivaduan elf who made a semi-permanent oasis just outside the gates of Allanak, and people would go to him for water because it was cheaper than the templar water.

I remember The Good Blackwing.

I remember riding a horse through Tuluk.

I remember when people used to backstab their kanks to max the skill.

I remember sparring in the rinth, then chasing "the brown haired man" all over the place because he ran off with our packs, and we never found him.

I started playing in about 92, then joined staff in 93.  I never had any memorable characters prior to staff, except a whiran who made the staff mad enough to put in components for the guardian spell (myself and another spam-cast the spell and filled Meleth's Circle with about 7 jakhals per room.. wiping out all the npc's in the area).

I also remember levels, though when I started you didn't know your level, just that you were gaining levels and XP.  There was some area out west of Allanak that had two towers on opposite ends with a Gaj in one.  A friend and I played shadowdancers who kept going there to whack the npc's and loot the corpses.

I feel your pain. I once had a character have an entire spell removed from a game for abusing it.

The spell in question was 'change sex'.

I remember Thao Ironsword.

I remember templars who "taxed" you every day they saw you.

I remember sparring with real weapons in the alleys of the 'rinth.

I  remember sparring the albino mantis outside Allanak next to the little hut southwest of the gates.

I remember quest day sundays.

I remember helping develop the Boopsie concept one evening while drunk in someone's kitchen in Chapel Hill, NC. (Hi Davien!)

I remember the days when all you had to work with was EMOTE, SAY, TELL, and WHISPER.  No tables, no complicated emote syntax.

I remember when people didn't make threads about the old days of rampant powergaming.

"What do you do for a living?"

the olive-skinned templar says to the poor-schmuck commoner, in sirihish:

the poor-schmuck commoner says to the olive-skinned templar, in sirihish:
"Dependents?"

Sighing, and waving a limp wrist, the olive-skinned templar says to the poor-schmuc commoner in sirihish:
"Bother.  Let us call your tax 50 sids, then.  Pay and then leave, commoner... hurry hurry..."

the olive-skinned templar makes a quick shooing motion with his fingers, while letting his hand dangle at the wrist.
