Seeking Advice.

Hello!

First off, I'm new here, I don't even have my account created in the MU* yet, as my friend who directed me here told me to not do anything until I've went over the site with a fine-tooth comb.

But after reading what I have so far, I'm very interested in getting into the game. Coming from World of Warcraft and their "roleplay" servers as my latesy venture, this sounds like an amazing place to start fresh for roleplay.

I was wanting to know if anyone could provide me with any tips/information to make my start a bit easier in the game? Going over the site is helping me out, even though some things do seem quite difficult, specifically emoting.

Perhaps just a little list of yes and no to keep me from getting too discouraged at the start?

Thanks everyone, and I hope to see you around in game!

Generally, you'll hear people say that one of the -best- character types to try the game out first in will either be a ranger or a warrior guild-type.  You are encouraged to avoid all the "sneaky" guilds and the merchant guild until you understand the game a little better.

Also remember to read the race docs for your chosen race about five times. :)  And then again, just for good measure.

Once in the game, look for a House or clan to join.  This is a great way to find other players and get thrown head-first into plots; not to mention, they have the curious ability to produce longer-lived characters.

When in doubt, run like a pansy.

Water is your friend.

Buy neccessities first.

And halflings are not jovial little people with furry feet.

There are a number of 'helpers' that are more than eager to accomodate your needs, which can be found here:  http://www.armageddon.org/intro/helpers.html

Oh, and welcome to Armageddon!   :D
couldn't help but to point out that my vote counted as '69'...heh!

Generally it's the people who take a little time beforehand to read docs that end up sticking around, so you're well on your way.  Other than that - expect to die.  Figure that your first few characters will be short-lived and unhappy.  That way if they're not, you can be pleasantly surprised.

For most House employment opportunities, human is your best bet.

Movement is life. So is stun. Put both in your prompt and keep close track of them.

If you decide to try a thief type, remember to put nosave on.

Rangers are very versatile especially for a first PC, warriors are very good for employment.

Newbie gear is pretty good. You don't need heavy armor right now anyway since it's a good idea to run from things until you know the world better.

Ask the helpers for help and don't worry if you make mistakes in game. We all were newbies once ourselves. Most of us will BRIEFLY step out of character and toss you a hint of a helpfile to check, but try not to rely on that since it breaks the flow of the game.

Good luck and have fun!

There is nothing 'weak' about letting your character beg for mercy or their lives.  It's not a sign of RL weakness; it's actually closer to being a sign of strength.

Play in a city-state (Allanak or Tuluk) and leave democracy out of the door - these places are managed by mysterious, disgustingly powerful Sorcerer-Kings and their mystical Templar minions, with assistance from the Noble Houses.  If you're not related to the Templars, the Noble Houses or the Great Merchant Houses, or some other important organization, your life isn't worth very much in most cases.

Treat women as your equals.  This includes any extra politeness a woman might expect OOCly.  No 'ladies first'.

Remember that this is a world without justice.
And use the Helpers.  Don't feel awkward, don't feel bad, don't feel weird.  Use the Helpers.

Getting yourself into a clan is a good way to stay alive and adjust to the game to start with. You'll get steady pay and not have to worry about food and water for the most part. You'll also have people to play with and help you out, and hopefully a good bit of plots and action to chew on.

For combat characters, try the T'zai Byn mercenary group, or look for work as a hunter or guard in one of the Merchant Houses like Salarr, Kadius, or Kurac. If you're looking to play more on the social side of things and stay in cities and not do much fighting, you could try and get into the Atrium in Allanak, or try to join one of the Bard Circles in Tuluk.

My biggest problem was getting it through my head that me wanting my character to be a bad ass didn't make it so. I spent at LEAST my first ten characters walking into the bar and seriously threatening anyone that so much as looked at me funny ... and then they kicked my ass and I died. Be a nice guy. When you get used to the game, then be a short-tempered asshole. You'll get much farther.

Members of your race are generally 62 to 79 inches tall.
How tall will your character be?
>70

I didn't know they stacked shit that high!

Which brings me to my next point. Don't get dissappointed if you die before achieving your dreams. When I was trying to convince this guy in my study hall to join, all he talked about was his sure fire plan to make money in this fanatical way, raise a small army in this fanatical way, and kidnap the Highlord in this, well, stupid way! First character rolls around and he dehydrates while hunting jozhal.  Sucks bad at the time, but you eventually get used to it.

Water, water, WATER!!![/i][/u] Never leave the gates without at least 1 container full (I recomend 2-3 if you can afford it) Water is the life blood of Zalanthans (more important than blood, really).  Dehydration doesn't slowly set in, it charges in like a heard of sexually frustrated mekillot, and once you get it you're well on the way to being screwed.

Maps! Maps are a lifesaver. I've been mapping everything I came across since nearly my first character. It's been somewhere near two years, and I still don't have them all, but I never get lost in a sandstorm in areas I -do- have mapped! Books of graph paper are $5 and they last a looong time.

QuoteGoing over the site is helping me out, even though some things do seem quite difficult, specifically emoting.

Advice on emoting? Don't memorize it all at once. That's like memorising all the equations in your aglebra book with no practice. Not much help when the test rolls around and you've never applied the formulas, huh?
Treat emoting like a school lesson and get used to it gradually. The armageddon emoting system is very indepth, rich, and all around a very, very, sexy thing. For the targeting, just start out with '~'. It's the most common and easiest to start with. Then, get into the '%', then the '!' and '^' and eventually you'll even figure out what the '#' works for!

Don't be embarrassed to mess up emotes. We can grasp what you meant, and if we can't, simply correct it and move on.

I would recommend creating a character with a generally outgoing, curious personality for your first plunge into the game. You'll be able to get involved in plots much easier that way, than if you played a shy character who never strikes up conversations at taverns. There are tons of great storylines going on at any given time, but you won't get to be a part of any of them unless you go out and take the initiative of getting yourself involved, even if it means sticking your nose where it might not necessarily belong.

Welcome to Armageddon!

Someone earlier in this thread suggested avoiding the merchant guild at first.  I would suggest the opposite.  Playing a merchant type character is an excellent way to survive a while as a newer player and learn some of the ins and outs of the game.

The trick is - join a clan.  No matter what guild or profession you choose, join a clan.  Trust me on this - you want to join a clan.  And if I didn't mention it - you'll want to try joining a clan.

Being a part of a clan will help you learn much faster and easier then you would do otherwise on your own. You'll be involved in RP and see interesting things - and as a bonus, you'll have a better chance at lasting a while.

Some good opportunities for brand new players are the Byn (for militant types) or the Atrium (for merchant or servant types).

Good luck and don't let the first death get you down.

Hi there and welcome! I love your name.

First of all, I've never played WoW, but from what I know of most MMO games like that, the "roleplay" on their servers is all skill, stat, or equipment based. "Let's go slay the paladin for the good of the Horde... and I get his cool magickal shield of +2 armor!" kind of stuff. Forget all of that while playing Armageddon, just toss it out the window totally. Roleplay here is based around characters, not advancing the numbers that represent them codedly.

First, read the docs and make sure you understand most of them. I know a lot of it is intimidating, but please don't let that make you afraid of making mistakes. Mistakes are how you learn best. My first PC made TONS of them, and yet she still had a very long and successful career for the most part. And then she died. And you're going to die too, whether you live for 3 hours or 90 days, but please don't get discouraged by it. As long as you're learning something from your deaths and your mistakes, you'll get the hang of things in no time.

Zalanthas is not a nice world. Most of the PCs you meet will not care two sids about your character to start off with. But keep in mind that even though our PCs might not be nice people, the players behind them are, and most will recognize you as a newbie and try to go easy on you at first.

Also, FIND A HELPER. I can't stress how enormously... helpful they can be. Don't be intimidated to ask somebody for tips either before or after making your character. After playing for a year I still ask helpers questions sometimes, because they really are that useful and the game really is that deep.

Last, just relax and have fun. It's possible to really have a good time even when things are going absolutely awful for your pc. Sometimes screwups can be the best thing to ever happen to you or your character. Don't be intimidated to dive in and play and see where you end up. Good luck!

I have been playing in WoW at times lately, on an "RP" server amd I am still looking for the Roleplay.  One notable difference other than the lack of pictures is the pacing.  With arm it takes time to build up a character.  When there are no levels and permadeath hanging over your head, brings a different kind of comitment to your character.  My advice, take your time, it is the trip that matters, not the destination.  And I envy you, everything is new, a whole world to be discovered.  Enjoy it while you can.

My advice is to just take the plunge - dive in - get your feet wet.

And find a Helper or two and feel free to annoy them with billions of questions - that's why they volunteered to be helpers.

Hee hee.  Indeed.

Welcome!  I would also agree to avoid sneaky characters at first and play a human.  Don't forget to buy water and food first!

Have fun here at Armageddon and though it's tricky at first just ask there are people here to help.  And don't forget you can type help whatever while in game if you forget stuff.  (Help Command ex. Help Emote)

As you've heard before, read the docks.

It'd help you out a lot if you created a character that was simply human.
Quote from: "help human"
Roleplaying:
Human character is as broad as human ability. Virtually any sort of disposition can be found amongst humans, and humans are allowed the greatest latitude in inventing their personalities. For all intents and purposes, a human is able to become whatever he or she wishes to become, without restriction.

Note:
It is _strongly_ recommended that new players create human characters as for their first few characters. This will enable you to get a reasonable
'feel' for the game before trying other races. Although city elves,
dwarves, and half-elves are available to all players, even these races
have their particular role-playing challenges.

I'd suggest trying a role that would keep you inside the walls of the city and out of trouble. A warrior or merchant guild will give you a chance to learn about life inside the cities and outside the cities (without having to take a step outside ). It be easier for you to get a feel of the game and its commands if you have a character that lives longer than a few hours. You'd only learn "not to do that again" and very little with those short lived characters.

Make sure you "quit" instead of hitting the little "x" with your mouse cursor, because your character will remain in the game. Most of the taverns and area where you could rest are quitsafe. There is more information about correctly logging out in "help quit".

Before I forget, read the helpfiles as well.
