"stand near"

Started by Cale_Knight, November 26, 2005, 04:28:07 AM

So I was thinking back to a previous role where I was a class without listen and also happened to be a noble guard. I spent a lot of time standing near tables with absolutely nothing to do or even listen to. So my idea is the "stand near" command.

At 1) a table are:
the buff, buff man is sitting on a pile of poo, the sick, sick man is standing near it.

While you're standing near a table, you'd hear everything at it as if you were sitting there, but would be unable to use the talk command. I think this both makes sense and would make certain guarding roles a bit more tolerable. And maybe you could also add a tiny bonus to guard/rescue as well. I dunno.

this already exists.

From the help stand file:

Stand                                                             (General)

This command enables your character to get back up to his/her feet from
a seated or resting position. If your character is bashed or tripped in
combat, this will allow him/her to quickly recover. As this is the most
active stance, it is the least regenerative.
You can also use the same syntax as sit to stand with/at/on an appropriate
object (like standing at a bar or table).  See help sit for more information.
In addition, you can append an emote before or after the arguments, which
will be added to the message "<your character's sdesc> stands" which is
received by everyone in the same location. Note that this will _not_ change
your character's ldesc, but only the standing message.  For more information
on emoting while standing, see 'help command emotes'.

Syntax:
  stand
  stand (<message>)
  stand at <table number>
  stand with <character name>
  stand <chair>
  stand <chair> <table>

Examples:
  > stand
The short, stocky elf stands up.

  > stand (pushing up off the ground)
Pushing up off the ground, the short, stocky elf stands up.

  > stand bar (nodding to ~barkeep)
You stand at the long low bar in the corner, nodding to the barkeep.

wow. didn't realize that.

are you sure that doesn't make you attempt to stand ON the table?

Not all tables have "room" to stand at them.

Some should but don't.. since this is fairly recent code.  An 'idea' or 'typo' on those could fix it.

I'm aware of that code, and this idea is conceptually and mechanically different from it. And I haven't actually seen (granted, I haven't actually looked) much other than bars that can be stood at.

How so? Unless you are meaning something along this:

Stand near tom

You take a position near tom and can now hear all whispers to him.

If not, then I don't see how it is different. Most tables I have seen, you can stand near them.

Arm is evil.  And I love it.  It's like the softest, cuddliest, happy smelling teddy bear in the world, except it is stuffed with meth needles that inject you everytime

That would require an opposite skill/command.

The filthy, disturbing elf stands near you.
>push elf
You push the filthy, disturbing elf away from you.

Brawling code.  If someone in RL decides to just stand next to you for a few hours, even if you do push them it won't help that much.
If your PC is important enough that the elf would be in trouble just for annoying you (aide, prominent merchant or another type of f-me :P) then you can simply find the Militia and have the elf taken care of.
If not, punch him in the face.

Hmm.. I agree..

>emote pushes ~elf away from him, gritting his teeth;hit elf

That would make it.
