How to choose between Allanak and Tuluk?

Started by Nyard, June 27, 2005, 04:20:35 AM

My character that was a citizen of Allanak, just died, so I made another character and sent in the application, and I was wondering how I'm going to decide between Allanak and Tuluk?  What are some good ways to decide?

If you want to help me specifically decide (please do), I just sent in an app for a human/burglar/house servant.  I plan on joining a noble house as a noble's aide.  I'm still new to ARM, so I guess I want to be able to learn more about Zalanthas.  Plus, I want political intrigue.  I already made one character in Allanak (sadly didn't last very long).

By the way, will my friends know that I died?

For longer lived characters, I tend to try and switch locations. It can be very difficult (for me) to get into a new personality when surrounded by people that previous characters had interacted with on a regular basis.

But.. you said you didn't last very long, so it's really up to you. I would suggest trying out Tuluk, if only to get a better feel for the different areas in game (it also seems a bit more newbie friendly).

First of all, this question is better directed to the immortals.

Second, if that doesn't work, try a helper, located at:

Third, I haven't played much in Tuluk, but I know for a fact that Allanak would be your best bet at getting hired into a noble house.

Forth, no more IC info like your race/class/subclass/major plans on the gdb, we don't want to give away plots.

And for the question about your friends knowing if you died, they'll only know if they find out In-game, through word of mouth, finding your body or whatnot, there's no message, email or any form of communication like that, it adds to the intrigue of armageddon.

You sound like a newbie, so I'd say stick with one city for a while. If you have a rash of quick death characters, then you will see the same characters with different characters of your own (which I found can give me a broad perspective on people, for example with one char person X was an enemy, with my next char he was a helpful friend), and you won't have to continuously learn a new area.

If you haven't put in your background which city state you're from, I'd suggest Allanak. This is because it has the Atrium (which is a clan whose role is to teach people how to be good servants ;)). I haven't played in it yet, but it sounds like a great clan.

is the size of the playerbase in allanak/tuluk roughly the same or do we have more players in allanak?

I think there are a fair number that shift.
As the great German philosopher Fred Neechy once said:
That which does not kill us is gonna wish it had because we're about to FedEx its sorry ass back to ***** Central where it came from. Or something like that."

The playerbase is large enough in each city that there are people to play and political intrigue is going on in both places. Allanak is typically a little more bustling, but I personally tend to find Tuluk more engaging.

Also, while the learning curve can be astoundingly steep in the Rinth, there is plenty of intrigue there, too, if you're able to dig it out. And Luir's Outpost is home of House Kurac, a merchant house that really deals in intrigue first (and spice second, I guess). So don't worry too much about the right starting location: there are things you can get involved in all over Zalanthas.

Hi there.

Both Allanak and Tuluk have noble houses. It shouldn't be too difficult to get in contact with someone from one of the noble houses and ICly try and get hired as an aide.

I'd also say they are both equal in merit, though each is different from the other, and that both have a reasonable playerbase.

Allanak does have the Atrium, which is a 'school' whose primary purpose is to teach people to be an aide (a majority of those taken on are newbies). Other noble houses do usually provide guidance of their own in this matter though, so I wouldn't let that be your guiding factor.

My advice to you is to choose a city you feel comfortable in and try and RP your way into the position you like.

Enjoy.

If your human thinks theft is an art and thinks he should be famous for it like a warrior for their skills, pick Tuluk.
If your human knows that he doesn't want anyone else to know he is a burglar, pick allanak.

Thats the way I would decide.

I'd like to point out that thieves don't exactly advertise what they are in either city.  Most people tend to keep that sort of thing secret no matter where they are.

Are you sure?  I read in one of the documents that in Tuluk, if you're a thief or assassin (by trade, not guild), you can go to a Templar, and he can officially register you as one.  Plus, it's not seen as an insult there to call somebody a thief or an assassin, yet it is an insult to call somebody an amateur thief or an amateur assassin.

Right, but they still wont go around and tell everyone they are a thief. Bad for business.

Registering does not necessarily mean that you are going around proclaiming to the masses "Hey, I'm a thief!" or "Hey, I'll kill people for you!"  Smart thieves tend to speak with a templar about it privately rather than going up to one in a tavern and asking "Excuse me Mr. Templar, I need a thieves' license."

And just because it isn't an insult to call someone a thief, does not mean that people LIKE thieves.  People will get just as pissed off at you in Tuluk for stealing as they will in Allanak.

Yea, but you can say you've stolen someone's sword off their belt without them knowing to a templar and you wont get arrested and killed.

That isn't the point that I was trying to make.  The point is that the general public still won't like being stolen from, and they will often try to get back what they lost, or get revenge.

Thieving and murder is still illegal in Tuluk.

Getting caught or even having too many people know you are a thief or an assassin makes you an amatuer thief or assassin.

If commoner Joe reports your thievery, fully expect to be punished for being sloppy enough to let commoner Joe know that you stole from him.

I just wanted to point out that by the time your character is submitted, you should already know where he's lived his whole life until that point. I realize I don't have any useful suggestions for deciding which place to live/start in, other than BOO TULUK, CHEER ALLANAK!

The time to decide this is definitely before you hit 'x' to submit, preferably before you finish writing your background.

Yes disgruntled commoners will want revenge - how - by buying an assassin licences from the templars! see - the Tuluk templars have all the smarts.
on't worry if you're a kleptomaniac, you can always take something for it.

Locking this thread since it's now gone off topic to discuss the licensing of thieves in Tuluk.
