Pfft what happened?

You tried to connect at the time that the game was in the process of being shut down for imm day.  It's possible to close the game to people logging in, and it's usually the first step of the shutdown process.  After that, the person carrying out the process starts the system messages urging people to log out, harasses the few who decide to get in one more gith hunt, shuts down the game once everyone is out, and then puts up that sign.

On the occasions that I stay up friday night, I normally end up like this:
