Throw

Started by Rhyden, December 29, 2004, 09:10:58 PM

For the very first time today, my character held a bow, bransished an arrow and shot it to the north, at nothing. (True story) While I was doing this, I realised maybe one or two ways this would be helpful. Also when I was doing this, an idea smacked me in the side of the head like an arrow:

Why not have throw the same way. It would probably be ten times more helpful and usable than warning shots with an arrow.

i.e.

<ep rock

<throw rock near east

<you throw a rock to the east

Here's a few ways how it could be helpful:

1) You're stuck in a hole, and there's somebody near the top but you need to toss them a rope or vice versa, they need to toss the rope down to you.

2) Just for the sake of being able to throw something somewhere! Throwing a rock to scare off a hawk, throwing a dead soldier's head into a templar-filled tavern, throwing away a key to a vault containing five steel longswords of might inside.

3) Being able to throw something further than the room you're in with a non-aggresive style.

These are just a few ideas of how it would be used. Suggestions? Comments? Rusty spoons?

I just want to be able to throw light sources (torches, glow crystals, etc) into an adjacent room.

I dig that. In fact, I'd like to be able to throw anything decent-sized at someone in your room, such as a chair, or to throw a knife, torch, etc, into the next room for nothing, as well.

You accidentally snap newbie into useless pieces.

Right on, Delirium and 7DVs, if there's any other throwing ideas that I forgot, throw    them out. (Lol, I hate myself sometimes)

Agreed, I think those are excellent ideas.

May the fap be with you, always. ;D

Anything holdable, is also throwable.

However, unless its an actual missile weapon (or 'throwable' as such), you probably won't be able to toss it more than a few feet, or nearby (same room only). You can, however, target anyone you want with it. This includes fun things like lit torches (fun for RPing burning witches at the stake).

Feel free to experiment, and see what happens. I suggest rummaging around the nearest latrines for something suitably brown and squishy, and aiming at a Templar.

I'm not certain if the inability to toss things like lights, or other objects, into the next room is by design or not, but I'm tempted to believe that it is. However, its a neat idea which may certainly be added sometime in the future (feel free to 'idea' the feature). While I think the idea of being able to toss a chair a league in the outdoors is silly, I do think you should be able to toss chairs and things off the shield wall, if nessecary, or toss a buddy some rope as he's sinking into the silts forever. I think the playerbase is mature enough not to be silly with their one-league tossing might. ;)

<prompt> throw torch someone east

You throw a burning simple, leather-wrapped bone torch east, aiming for someone.

A burning simple, leather-wrapped bone torch flies in from the west and lands on the ground near
someone.

Eh.. that's what I got.. the problem I found was that you had to have a target, you couldn't just "throw torch near east" or anything...

Also.. when I put the target, it still came back saying 'someone' and it wasn't dark..

For example, "throw torch near east" Would get "You don't see that person there"

Tried it. Ditto.

I love this idea.  Torches might not be able to be hurled very far, but glow-crystals certainly can be.  I'd be all for coding this, and making glow-crystals "1-room" throwable weapons to allow for it.

> throw glow wizturbo east
You steady yourself and take aim.
> You throw the purple glow-crystal to the east and hit wizturbo in the head!
> think Damnit!  Third glow crystal that bastard's eaten this week!

Heh, I don't think weapon is a good idea.  There's another way to do this, I think.

I recognize the distance argument, and am inclined to refute it in the same way it has been refuted in the past:

If you can throw something three feet, you *can* throw it one room away. Suppose you're standing outside a tavern?

For that reason, it makes a lot of sense that one-room distances should be possible by code, even if there is the paranoid concern for abuse (which there shouldn't be that much of, with such an RP-oriented idea in the first place).

There should definitely be a way to lower and/or drop objects into caves or off of cliffs (or the Sea of Silt) without having to personally risk oneself.

Maybe a generic toss command that will let any object (assuming weight and/or size is appropriate) be harmlessly dropped one room away?

I like that addition in theory, but it almost reaches into micromanagement, don't you think?

I think throw could simply be recoded to resemble the shoot command, in that you can throw in a direction as well as at a person in a direction. Perhaps a strength-versus-weight check would be involved, pretty simple stuff.
