I think at one point, there was a massive green venus fly trap, and it kept eating a large amount of the population, and it happened to be located on their main obsidian deposit, so people would try to risk it to mine some 'sid.  After a while the venus fly trap became an integral part of their culture, as well as the obsidian, so they colored their flag green and black.  The venus fly trap later died, when someone brought a giant duskhorn down from the north, and the duskhorn ate it.
