The Green Knight
« on: August 04, 2021, 08:07:34 PM »
Went expecting a sword and knight-y type movie, instead I ended up with lots of following a guy wander through the woods, him getting jerked off for clothing, and what I can only think was supposed to be him high as a kite talking to Giants...

Anyone else seen it, and know WTF I just watched?

I haven't watched this but given your description it seems like it might be based off Gawain and the Green Knight which I read in AP English in Highschool:
https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sir_Gawain_and_the_Green_Knight

My favorite thing about this chivalric romance is the hyper-masculine "Giant" you describe is often interpreted as a symbol for old barbaric cultures and an old barbaric form of masculinity, whereas Gawain is supposed to represent more civilized courtly behavior.

The movie might suck, never seen it, and the source text will probably bore you as an adult, but I loved it as a nerdy high schooler.

I haven't seen the show yet but it is definitely based on that.

I have this translation (which is nice because it's side-by-side with the Middle English or what have you) - and I think I did read it through once ages ago. https://www.amazon.com/Gawain-Green-Knight-Verse-Translation/dp/0393334155/

There's also a translation by Tolkien that I assume is rather good: https://www.amazon.com/Gawain-Green-Knight-Pearl-Orfeo/dp/0358652979/

Somebody's thoughtful twitteranalysis (of the original story) since I am not skilled at litorature knowlings.
