Friday's Trip Across America
« on: March 09, 2021, 12:21:19 PM »
Hey everybody! I'm traveling cross country (I know) from North Carolina back to Washington State as I leave the Marines. If you'd like for me to stop by and catch a beer with you (with masks on?) or maybe we can fade the social interaction - drop your city/state below and I'll see about traversing your way. I'll update the list if I get any bites. My trip will be the first couple weeks of April.

I took the middle USA route last time so I'll probably go through Virginia/upper USA this time on the way back.

Places I'm Definitely Stopping At:
    • Goldsboro, NC (Dan)
    • Nashville, TN (Kismet)
    • Chicago, IL (friend)
    • Bumfuckingville, NE (DesertT)
    • Bond & Denver, CO (Kronibas, Williamson and a bunch of hoodlums)
    • Portland, OR (Ourlalalala, brytta, Max + others?)
    [/list]

Sign me up if you're headed through Portland-area. Though you should probably drive I-90 through MT/ID if you haven't yet.

Also I assume you've seen the Corn Palace already?

I'm also in Portland. As is my bf who plays Arm, but I dunno if he's interested. I'll ask!

So long as you're the first couple of weeks of April, I'll be around.

Don't wait until May though, because then I'll be gone!!

Oooh, me too! I finally got a new car after mine was stolen so I can meet up wherever. I bet I could convince Potaje to come too, depending on where/when.

My brother still lives in that area so I'll definitely be around for a little bit, at least. And visiting semi-regularly. Wanna do something particular? Something special? Some kind of activity and then hangout.

Regarding Denver, Casa Bonita is kinda fun.

    http://casabonitadenver.com/

One of the largest restaurants and they have a dive show nearly every 15 minutes.

    Plus themed rooms.

My wife doesn't care for the food, but it's not horrible.  Especially if you've eaten a few MREs.

If you want quality of food, then you can't go wrong with The Buckhorn Exchange.

    https://www.buckhorn.com/

It is certainly on the pricey side, but well worth it.

It looks like I'll be leaving base probably around the 13th or so. I'll be in Raleigh for a couple days after that probs, then onward. So plan is to finish the trip by the 30th. Places to visit in between. I'll update when I get a solid day.

Swing through Denver. Maybe we can call Kronibas down from the mountains?
He just reached out to me!

We have some options for me + 5 others! He says anyone in CO is welcome. He can meet us over in Bond, CO for rafting/hiking.

    Tentatively April 23-25. Who's down?

I wasn't planning on it since I'm doing Nashville then Chicago. My map I just posted is a little off, now that I've added Nashville.

    Roger that,

If you can get to Denver by Saturday afternoon, I'll treat you to a meal in Denver (I suggest the 6-course chef tasting at Uchi - Denver). We should be able to make it to Kronibas' homestead that night. I have a 2 man Tupei rooftop tent on my Outback so we don't have to pitch a tent. Sunday, once sober, we can raft/hike with Kronibas as our guide. Unfortunately, I have to work Monday, and Denver to the homestead is 2.5 hours through the Rockies.

P.S. The forecast is for snow on Monday and Wednesday so pack warmly.

Spent last night getting some good Ethiopian food / seeing the fight with Williamson and I'm hitting up Kron today for some rafting before I start my journey to Portland. Ought to be in Portland Thursday/Friday. My brother lives there so I will probably stay over the weekend.

If no one has good ideas for you: Acropolis

Lived there for four years. Portland, not the Acropolis specifically. I know you have kids and stuff but still worth going.

Edit: assuming the acrop is open with COVID. Crap shutting down on the west coast is why I had to travel to more dangerous parts of the country for my fun.

Turrible idea: hiking in the Gorge, open-air dining in Hood River. However I'm only suggesting this out of self-interest (and because I don't know Actual Portland that well). I defer to locals.

I'm post-shot-#2 so fairly up for anything Th/Fri. I'm booked Saturday afternoon though.

I've actually already been here with some friends. I used to live in Vancouver WA for about 3 years.

Only been to one strip club, though. El Diablo took several thousand dollars from a friend of mine so I figured I should not wade into that kind of marital issue.
