Can a Free-Man be a gladiator?

Started by Ledge, August 02, 2017, 10:38:04 AM

Self explanatory... but I was wondering if my Non-Slave character could somehow get himself to compete in the gladiator fight or is that something strictly for slaves?

There is precedent for "Free" gladiators in the city, though most of the time they do not compete with the real Gladiators. Its a bit like having the Chief of Police fight a WWE Wrestler (if wrestling were real). They both may be physically fit, but one is professionally trained in what he does, the other is an amateur.

You can fight in the Arena, and you can fight some gith gladiators, or sentenced-to-death elves and other criminals. I don't know how the Gladiator owners would feel about "Joe Schmoe" fighting their prized Champion Gladiator though.

Masks are the Armageddon equivalent of Ed Hardy shirts.

So it's unheard of for someone to try and make a career out of gladiator fights? The full-time gladiators will always be slaves?

I highly suggest you simply apply for a gladiator role if that's the sort of play you're interested in.

Edit: You can then get into a back-and-forth with staff about the exact sort of Gladiator you want to play, then staff can guide you from there.

Free gladiators are a thing but they're not really the same thing as the "real," slave gladiators. EXCEPT, I do think that Borsail Wyverns are allowed to be gladiators in a more "official" capacity. Unfortunately, those clans are closed.

Yes. It is incredibly rare for a "possession" like a slave, even moreso for a VALUABLE possession to be given its freedom.

If you, as a non-slave, want to make a career out of fighting, you can. Join the Arm and fight breeds. Join the Byn and fight spiders. Join Kurac and fight gith.

If you want to fight like a gladiator in the arena, expect it to be to the death. That's where slaves and things we don't care about go to spill blood in glorious and engaging ways.

Thanks for the input guys. My idea was more like a poor guy with nothing to lose looking at the arena as a way to make a name for himself and make money. Since he's free if he makes a name for himself he could attract the attention of some big timers that want to hire him.  I was trying to go with that premise kind of.

To be clear, and summarize some of the points:

1. On occasion, a PC noble (usually Borsail) will advertise competitions for "free" gladiators in Allanak.  This is in my experience quite rare (once in the last 3 years).  It was a lot of fun when it was going on though.  Check the rumor boards to see if this is still a thing, or cozy up to a noble and try to make it a thing.

2. Normally, the gladiators in Allanak are slaves or criminals.  Among the former you have two types:

3. Pen gladiators, which are slaves (maybe criminals?) which you can app to play during an arena RPT as a 2nd PC.  They can't leave the slave pens.

4. Reigning gladiators, which are slaves.  You can app to play them as your primary PC.  They can leave the pens and the arena and hang out at the bar and get free drinks and be badasses.  (They are sort of like sports superstars.)

None of this is to be confused with the sub-guild 'Gladiator' which is just a meta construction:

That full time gladiator Role does sound interesting, I might actually consider applying.

As for what you describe here, a 'common' route for a PC is to join the T'zai Byn Company (mercenaries).  They take in the riff-raff and spit out hardened mercenaries with reputations.  Someone who comes out of the T'zai Byn Company is also more likely to get hired elsewhere based on that reputation.

Nauta is correct.

Free gladiators happened while the Gladiator roles were unavailable. We enjoy supporting player initiative. Because people enjoyed and were proud of their free gladiator accomplishments we were happy to let them stand

Still it was a nobles pet project and while wonderful, not an ongoing endeavor.

I hope no one will be offended if I say Free Gladiators are not real gladiators

I think the concept you outlined could fit very well as either a pen or reigning gladiator though!

Applying for even a second PC Gladiator is a 0 risk if you want to try it out to test the waters before you decide to apply for a full fledged Reigning Gladiator. These roles are still evolving, growing and being changed up for your pleasure. New things always take time to settle and find their groove, but getting in close to the ground floor has its own rewards.

I want two gladiators to get into a fight in a crowded bar, and people immediately start betting on and cheering for their favorites, bring the arena to the gaj just like our politicans have been calling for for years
