sports?

Are sports part of the culture in Zalanthas?   I know there are some social games (cards/dice) and some things that amount to sorta carnival tests of strength.    And the arena.   But beyond that?   Not looking for IC info, but just sort of wondering whether/how it fits in culturally.    Are there local sports heros?    Are sports too frivolous for Zalanthas?

Gladiators are definitely a part of the culture.  That's a sport, and often, very successful gladiators rose to heroic status.  Same with races.  I've heard of kank races and the like, and I'd imagine it's similar to Roman chariot races, where a successful racer would achieve similar accolades.

You know.. now that you mention it I think theres some huge room for expansion here.... Elf head basketball enyone?
A single death is a tragedy, a million deaths is a statistic.  Zalanthas is Armageddon.

We used to have a half-giant crunch elves into balls and hurl them around Allanak. Sometimes into walls. Sometimes into other elves. It was good fun and a much more interesting approach to punishment then just plain old summery execution. Good times.

Might take some code, or some really good role-play, but I always thought something like a jocky race would do well.

Nobles and templars employing kank (or maybe some other animal) riders  who race every month or so.  Big money, can employ more people, etc

If it was coded, you could bet on the races! Wealthy merchants could become even wealthier... Or become poor as shet. And.. Could lead to players developing characters with gambling addiction maybe? :D  :D

There has been at least one kank race in my memory. It is coded now. Everybody makes their kanks run. It can be long distance or sprint, with checkpoints or not. Any kind of race you can think of, you can do. Bets don't require any code. They require two or more characters willing to bet on who is going to win. Go for it.

As far as other sports, Old Tuluk used to have grand hunting competitions and the winners were given a generous purse and high regard. I know it has also happened at least once in New Tuluk.

In Allanak the main sport as I see is the Arena which regularly has battles. If you want to join in, ask a Templar and I'm sure they'll oblige.

It doesn't take code!!

imho, the Kuraci should jump *all* over this.

Of course, if they did, we'd probably some day see:

Yep... good times.
Yes. Read the thread if you want, or skip to page 7 and be dismissive.

Stop being shitty to each other.

I seem to remember mutterings of an illegal boxing ring out in 'Rinth on the old GDB. I wonder if that ever started up?

Last I knew I thought betting was coded, like I thought there was in the arena, otherwise that was a PC with a player with a terrific memory (Or fast copying and pasting).

And there are gambling institutions already, by no means hard to find, and I hope that's not too IC (They exist in the major cities).

But as far as sports in our football baseball basketball sense, I would doubt there were many. I would think the sports would somehow revolve around a useful skill, like kank racing, hunting competitions (Perhaps rock throwing contests?) or... well, I can't think of anymore. But you see how it is. Maybe there could be a like game actually derived from one of those things, sort of like Polo or that Mayan death ball thing.

kank polo

i think kank polo would be good practise for military units and people could bet on the games, none of it would have to be coded, it couldbe alot of fun
oh I'm on fire.

Dwarf tossing

No one tosses a dwarf!

The Byn had a little game called 'Toss the Runner' a while back...

I think that if any Zalanthan sport pops up, it should have nothing to do with Earth at all. And it should probably be harsh and bizarre... I doubt a Zalanthan would have much respect for a guy that could put a ball through a hoop, however they'd be impressed by the guy that could shoot an arrow through the most baobab planks (just as an example).

I meant to reply to this about a month ago when Tony posted it, but I forgot...

Yeah, I looked up about the ancient Olympic games, and it seems like the competitions then more fit into skills that would be important to warriors.   (E.g.  wrestling, boxing, running, chariot racing, horse racing, jumping, discus, javelin)

And I think Zalanthas would have perhaps their own similar contests, though not on the scale of the Olympics perhaps

Speaking of "Mayan death ball," here's some related quotations from elsewhere on the Internet:

1. "The details of the game are inconsequential. The best part is, after the game, the captain of the winning team gets beheaded. It was considered an honor for their blood to be allowed to soak into the ground."

2. "In Mayan times (300 - 900 AD), a player who scored a goal could claim the property of any spectator that he could catch."

The historical accuracy of these is questionable, but the potential for adaptation is more straightforward.

How about that game where you toss the ball as far as you can in Allanak?

Been a while since I've done that, but I remember something about it. Basically just try to beat the record, though.

Dart throwing a sport?

BLITZBALL!!!! =P

I have it ALL figured out. We could have a giant spherical arena in Allanak, made from tanned carru leather holding long curving rib bones of mekillot in place. We could then have a number of Vivaduans use their powers to hold the water in place whilst we commence to playing the best sport ever created!! Screw quidditch, this is the big leagues =P

sigh....If only Tuluk would accept magickers....finally, we could have an arena...*sniff*

Elf-head football!

Take the head, pass it to your teammate.  Run toward the line to score, and dont bump into the other team, 'cus they can crush you.

Note :  Half-giants are not allowed to play!
