Darkness and objects in containers on your person.

Just wondering why you cannot get a waterskin or food from your pack if you are in a dark room. Makes sense that if you can get your torch out and light it, you could find a waterskin and take a drink or eat a piece of bread.

Thoughts?
It matters not how strait the gate,
How charged with punishments the scroll,
I am the master of my fate:
I am the captain of my soul.

It's something that's always annoyed me, I know it's there, I'd know what it felt like, and I'd know where it is on my body or in my pack, so why can't I get it out if the rooms dark? I don't need a light to get a pack of my shoulder and reach inside.

I have to agree with that, we should at least be able to get anything on our person and in our belongings out in the dark. Can't we get our torches out? Why is that? Why not our bowls of stew or mul mix or dagger?

It's very dark here, you can't see shit.
get bundle.papers pack (looking about with shifty eyes)
You dig around in your large pack searching for a bundle of papers.
You get a bundle of papers from your large pack.
think Crap, I forgot my torch... how am I supposed to...

What about a delay timer for getting an item out of a container when its dark out?

I'd accept that, it takes longer to do anything when you can't actually see what your doing.

Or fishing tablets out when you are blind. You might not be able to tell what color you've grabbed but you should still be able to fish them out and eat them.

This would nerf Drovians. What's next, blind fighting?
The sword is sharp, the spear is long,
The arrow swift, the Gate is strong.
The heart is bold that looks on gold;
The dwarves no more shall suffer wrong.

Actually it wouldn't... Drovians wouldn't have the delay at all and blind fighting is another category altogether.  I should be able to feel around for something and find it.  We already have a system in place that works with size and weight... a table for example would take longer to find since it's small.  Thing is all around, realism is limited by code.  I'm sure something like this wouldn't be worth the time.  The current system works... if you can't see at all, you can at least get a light source so you can look for something.

I personally wish there were low-light light sources that would give you enough light to see in the room you're in, but not able to be seen outside the room.  Would make for interesting concepts with the sneaky types.

How? If I have a knife in my pack and the room suddenly goes dark, I think I'd be able to find it, it might take me a while, but I know it's there, and I know where it is and how to get to it. I don't see how being able to retrieve an item from my personal being with a delay in a no light situation affects anyone else being able to act in any way shape or form. Especially a Drovian.

Doesn't grabbing a light count as a delay?
Any questions, comments, or condemnations to an eternity of fiery torment?

Waving a hammer, the irate, seething crafter says, in rage-accented sirihish :

find skin pack
[lag]
Fumbling in the darkness, you get your waterskin from your suede, star-sequined fanny pack.

You young'uns. Originally, you weren't able to get anything out of a pack in the darkness - nothing, not even a torch or a glow crystal. The code was changed eventually to allow lightsources to be retrieved, because there were wishes and deaths aplenty because of people being 'suddenly' in the darkness, unable to 'enter' what they had just left, with no light source or way to RETRIEVE said light source.

That said, I wouldn't mind if it were changed, imposing a delay or somesuch.

I appreciate that I can at least locate a light source.

It is funny that with the blindfighting skill I could have a character who is better at sword fighting in the darkness than pulling a waterskin out of his pack.

Well, I know that even in complete darkness or sometimes even half asleep, I can find what I'm looking for in the deep, dark, black hole that is my purse. I may have to take some junk out first, but I always find what I'm looking for. I believe this would be an easy enough expectation for the game as well.

Maybe a delay based on how many different sdescs are in your pack?

You fumble around in the darkness...

You pull out a sparking, emerald-studded necklace.

You say, in sirihish:
     "Nope..."

You fumble around in the darkness...

You here someone growling menacingly.

You get a wooden spice pipe out of your pack.

Fumbling more frantically, you say, in sirihish:
"Oh Krath, not this either... please, please, just my knife..!"

get knife pack

You fumble around in the darkness...

You get a long-handed, obsidian-tipped fork out of your pack.

Sighing loudly, and brandishing your long-handled, obidian-tipped fork,
you say, in sirihish:
     "Bring it on, ugly!"

Someone lights a torch.

The figure wearing a massive, gortok-headed mask exclaims, in sirihish:
     "BOO!"

You scream, loudly, staggering back and cowering against a wall!

You say, in sirihish, with an angry face:
"Amos, you prick!... okay, Malik, don't drool on me... Malik?"

The gargantuan ankheg attacks you!
