What are magickers called?

Started by Fnord, June 10, 2006, 05:31:47 PM

Is it cool to get a little pool of names to call magickers by? Has this already been done? I mean, how would a character in the world refer to a magicker?

I've heard gemmer in the south, shaman by tribals, and witch in the north. If this is considered IC, sorry in advance.

Any dirty little name that I can think of that has the same context of some of the ones you have already named is game in my book.

Yes. Read the thread if you want, or skip to page 7 and be dismissive.

Stop being shitty to each other.

Abomination - very negative, mostly in Tuluk.
Finger-wiggler or wiggler - negative, used anywhere.
Witch - negative (also used to refer to templars of the opposing city-state).
Mage - 'technical' name for an elementalist, neutral and used everyone.
Elementalist - technical name, not often used in Tuluk.
Gemmer - generally neutral, only refers to a gemmed elementalist.  Rare in Tuluk.
Gifted/Empowered/Talented - positive form, virtually never used.

Sometimes a mage can be described using a more specific form:
Wet/dusty/windy/scalding/dark/buzzing/evil wiggler - all negative, of course.

And sometimes a superior mage will call an inferior mage in a similar form (most often if they channel the same element):
Droplet/Oasis/[Little] River - Vivaduan
Pebble/Stone/[Little] Boulder - Rukkian
Gust/Breeze/[Little] Gale - Whiran
Kindle/Flame/[Little] Blaze - Krathi
Shade/Shadow/[Little] Darkness - Drovian
Spark/Jolt/[Little] Lightning - Elkran
Die/Die/[Die more] Die - Nilazi

This last thing is more for nicknames, just like people IRL might call a young kid 'squirt'.  It's not extremely popular, but I've seen it once and it was pretty cool so why not?

I happen to be a fan of the old-fashioned 'magician' instead of mage.

Don't forget Whiran, Drovian, Krathi... those are all perfectly acceptable, neutral terms.
You could also speak of elementalists as "touching" or "being connected" to an element, to give something a slightly positive spin.

The rusty brown kank to the north bleats miserably.

I played a tribal that ran into quiet a few magickers and he refered to them as callers, thought it was pretty appropriate. Earth Caller, Wind caller, Sun caller.. what not. *shrugs* Just another idea.

I had a character who had a number of names for gemmers, among them leashed, collared, slaves, and pets.

A favourite of mine is "Templar's pet" (in a negative manner of course) for anyone not of Tuluk or tribal descent. It may or may not be accurate. But ignorance and assumptions are fun ;)

My southerners tend to call them all gemmers, whether they're gemmed or not. After all - an ungemmed elementalist is just one that the templarate hasn't caught and collared yet.

Not really.  While the the Energizer Bunny keeps going and going, Elkrans are just a spark and a fizzle.

No way.. Elkrans, my favourites are well known for recharging both parties to keep on several times in one MUDsex session.

By the way... <element>-bound, linked to <element>, demi-demon (I used once, believing their mothers were raped by demons in their dreams so these demi-demons are given birth) may also be used.

"Magicker" is a great term that's pretty universal and understood.
