Allanak Arena

Hey i had an idea the other day and I wanted to see what the rest of you guys think about it.

I have always loved the Arena in Allanak, but I never really get a chance to see it used.  And when I do I think that there is something missing.  Would it not make it a whole lot more interesting if you could make bets on the events?  Like have an NPC who accepts bets on the event that will take place.

For example: - Have the templar set up the event options like "Gladiator VS three elf slaves"  Then when the event is over, have the templar give the results of the match.  So the people betting get a ticket that they can hand in for their winnings.

What you guys think? :?:
CC

It has been handled by PCs before and that's worked rather well.
esperas: I wouldn't have gotten over the most-Arm-players-are-assholes viewpoint if I didn't get the chance to meet any.

Cegar:   most Arm players are assholes.
Ethean:   Most arm players are assholes.

Make a PC for it and earn big.. Even bribe the templar to slow it down till all bets are received. Even... ask the templar for a cheat for 20% of the earnings. Too many people betting for the elven thief team? There will possibly be a gemmed pet to ensure the elves start in a weakened state. Or maybe the elves are given chipped weapons. Possibilities are endless.

What they said.  Coding up an automated betting system would be doable, but a huge undertaking.  A much, much better solution is to have PC's do this.

You came up with the idea, so you do it!  Have your PC become a Gambling Lord.  Approach PC templars and work out a deal, then set up something semi official with them, then organize it, and implement it.

I have to admit, a bookie would be a pretty sweet character concept.
Although it would be nice if Arena matches were more frequent. I remember there being talk of automated Arena matches, where NPCS fight, or VNPCs fight and echoes reflect who's winning, with a random chance of success for each side. Such a system would be a huge boon to the world of Zalanthan gambling, methinks.

I'd recommend houses Kurac, Nenyuk and Fale handle it.

As in... they throw Kuracis in for selling spice, Fales sit and watch and smoke the spice confiscated from Kurac, and Nenyuk locks everyone out of their apartments for missing their rent payments while they're out watching the arena?

Nah.

Kurac always struck me as having a sort of mafia loan-shark aspect to it.  I could see
some poor schmuck getting way into debt and possibly losing his freedom by becoming
a debt slave, only to have Kurac bail him out...him having to owe them.

Nenyuk, maybe a little less sinister, since they make the money, but they might offer
some foolish individuals the chance to work off a debt.  They would also likely be
some of the best recordkeepers outside the nobles and templarate too.

Fale: Heh, yeah, these guys would be the foremost betters in the city, so they're
probably all about winning and losing their games of chance.

Yeah, I could see something like an Arena tournament being a good thing.

I'm thinking of the game Fable. At one point you fight an arena match and earn money for each round you survive.

We could do that with Allanak fighters. Once a month the Templars send in one person to compete against various foes, and for each round they win, they earn sid.

A minor entrance fee (100 sid) and players that want to compete sign up for a list. Preference should go to those higher in rank because naturally they are typically better fighters, so they get bumped up to the next available slot.

Then for each round they win they earn some amount of sid, it could be fixed or it could be on an increasing scale.

A betting system could be put in place, I'm not sure of the code difficulty, but you could do a 50/50 split of funds. 50% goes to the Templarate for organizing and buying the beasts/slaves, and the other 50% is divided up amongst those who win their bets.

This could be cool.

I guess someone just needs to come up with a system that works for this.

It's been done before in the past so it can easily be done again. :)
