Cloaks and coverage

Started by UnderSeven, April 14, 2006, 03:48:01 PM

Okay, So I've long since worn really neat outfits and had to take off my cloak to show it, say dresses.  I think it's silly that a cloak covers an entire dress.  Sometimes maybe it makes sense, but in general I'm starting to wonder if it wouldn't be more neat if cloaks only covered up belt and worn on belt and left body alone, or some compromise there of.

Thoughts?

I've always thought of cloaks as huge sheets that cover your entire body, from shoulds to toe, PURPOSELY, to keep sands from kicking your ass, and lodging itself so deep into your crevices, even a mul pleasure slave wouldn't get at is.

I think cloaks would be useless, if they were half-length.. They would become fashion, and no longer a usefull peices of equipment.

Sure, make some cloaks for fashion if yers wanna.
your mother is an elf.

I've long wanted the ability to clasp/unclasp cloaks to hide/reveal the wear locs normally covered by them.
eeling YB, you think:
    "I can't believe I just said that."

So why are you wearing cloaks instead of capes?

cloaks usually reveal what's below, even of they are huge. Unless you wrap them all about your body, in which case you can't use your arms anymore...

Unless we're talking abotu cloaks with sleeves here, then forget what I said - do thsoe cloaks have sleeves? that would completely overthrow any of the pictures I had..
A rusty brown kank explodes into little bits.

Someone says, out of character:
"I had to fix something in this zone.. YOU WEREN'T HERE 2 minutes ago :)"

Some of the cloaks do have sleeves written into the description.

It'd be great if clothes could cover body locations that they aren't being worn on. That dress you've got? Covers your legs as well. That cloak you've got? Covers your arms and shoulders.

There was a thread on being able to clasp or unclasp some cloaks (makes no sense for abas or the like) to show what's underneath.  That to me would be a great feature but may be a headache to code.

For now though you can always wear a cloak outside then remove it when entering a room.  This also makes some sense for fashionable folk, think of it like taking off your coat when you go to a dinner party.

How could it cover your belt, but not your chest?  This might be l33t cooler, but I don't think it makes a whole lot of sense.  I'd rather have them make cloaks open and close like has been suggested before.

Maybe dresses should take up two body locations?

<worn in hair>               a simple hairclasp

<worn on torso>              a sesky dress

<worn on hands>                your nails
<secondary hand>             a long whip
<worn on legs>               a sesky dress

You do not have that item.

There's no way for it to take up two slots at the same time though, is there?

Actually, yes. If I had my old MUD code, I'd post the code here.

There are SEVERAL cloak and cloak-like items in-game that appear to be fashionable in function, rather than protective.  You wouldn't wear something frilly and expensively ebroidered out in the desert anyway.

Sleeveless or not, I have a very difficult time imagining cloaks as some sort of full-body wrap.  Many cloaks do not have sleeves in the game (or atleast don't mention them in descriptions), and even those that do often don't make sense to be worn that way.  It ceases to be a cloak, really.. why not just wear a hooded robe or, better yet, a Zalathan jumper suit? :P

I would love to see a feature that allows someone to wear their cloak open.  I would, of course, also love to see expert thieves get the ability to get in at your belt under your closed cloak (a bit more difficult than if it was open, which is a bit more difficult than if you hadn't a cloak at all).  I sort of secretly feel that cloaks are so overly popular because they are among the most powerful-seeming items in the game.. they look cool, most have hoods, and so long as you remember 'close pack', you are inpenetrable to most theiving.

I hate when someone assumes there's no way to do something.

It's all code.

ANYTHING is possible, there are just degrees of effort.

Making a clothing object take up two spaces isn't only possible, it's reasonable.

Also possible, and actually a good idea, is making one wear location unusable if something is worn at another wear location.

That's a whole lot of code for something that is functionally aesthetic.

Davein,

You sure about that?  You are able to accurately predict the amount of code required to make this change?

You sure that someone didn't already stub in something that is currently not fleshed out?

I think we need to reserve judgement until someone with knowledge of Arm's source speaks up.

Plenty of changes that have gone in lately are "functionally aesthetic". (Command emotes?)

They're also really freaking awesome.

We're playing a roleplaying game. A high portion of the content is going to be aesthetic. I don't think that's a good reason not to code something.

Right, I don't think anyone is saying it's impossible to write new code to do it. We're saying it's not possible to do with the current code. There's no setting on an item that lets it do it, at the moment.

I like the idea of being able to "bundle" your cloak when you want it to read in the description like it does now.. covering belt, blades, shirt... and you could unbundle it to let it hang open and show the other gear.

Well, I had a suggestion for the basic same problem that someone wrote a thread about at the beginning of the month. Since I don't feel like rewriting it, here it is!
