In terms of singing and musical tones, would notes that sound pleasing in RL get similar reactions in Zalanthas?

In terms of music and singing, I say go with Arabian-Middle Eastern style or more tribal societies.

Make sure if you are talking about music in-game, though, that you don't start talking about A chords and F chords and such. Given that you don't know the alphabet. Maybe just refer to fourths, fifths and the like.

I think there is a fair range of interpretations in terms of tribal societies that you could use.

The major existing grouping of primitive desert tribes would be middle eastern, those from Sub-Saharan Africa, and those of the Southwestern United States.  There is much that is common between these groups musicaly, and much that is widly divergent.

I would also suggest finding an NPC bard in the game, and having it sing a song or three for you.  Watch the NPC's emotes when it sings, and that will give you an idea of how to describe music and such.  Let them inspire you!

Conversely - if you do not wish to watch npcs perform you can seek out PC bards and learn from them.

Both the north and the south have bards of a sort.  In the North they are far more influencial and important than in the South but that does not mean they don't exist in the South.

Basically, most people tend to emote music in a variety of ways but typically they use abstract expressions to indicate mood, tone, and complexity.

One of the hardest things to do in Arm, in my opinion, is to express music in a text based format.
