As indicated in the MOTD I just updated, sandstorms have been "fixed", and they may once again cause you to lose your bearings in the desert  (a long-staning bug broke this behavior).  Be prepared.

Also, it's worth noting that some places in the world are consumed by permanent sandstorms.  Even if you can see there, you may still be getting blasted by sand.
