Title: What Does a 'rinthi Accent Sound Like?
Post by: Miradus on January 26, 2017, 10:18:59 AM

Cockney? British slum?

New York gangster? Bronx?

Cockney.
That's always been my take.

I'm not entirely sure what Cockney sounds like other than from the movie Snatch.

But I'm just looking for a general consensus. Or Moe's opinion. Either one generally can be accepted as canon.

I don't think there's canon on this. I too have seen it as a kind of cockney Mary Poppins/Dickens ragamuffin talk, mixed with a touch of pirate.

Also, the code gives us 'rinthi-accented', so I tend to just speak normal, and let the other players visualize how it sounds to them.

On this note:

What does 'bendune' sound like?

This, a thousand times this. While I love the personal accents and flourishes that some people come up with, the game DOES have coded accents. If you have a staccato accent, you speak quickly and in short chirps. You don't necessarily have to do it in your speech everytime.

I agree, but the different cultures in Arm have adapted their own vernacular. Like some tribals say "ti" and some desert elves have their own little expressions.

So I don't need to do the accent perfect, but knowing those little things help craft the character, I think? There's no 'rinthi tribal subforum to go read docs so I don't really know if they say "having a giggle, mate" or what?

Don't get me started on tribal vernacular.

Stuff like that is character to character. Not all tribals say ti, not all Soh say "Kah". Its just stuff players came up with over time, but its not really documented. Its just fun, semi-unique stuff. As you get more into character, these things come more freely, but a 'rinthi saying "having a giggle, mate?" sounds just fine to me, as would them saying "oy, th' fuck you doin' on my side, 'ere?"... just make sure I can understand your ass.

Anyone who thinks they have a right to understand someone just because they're speaking the same language as you has never been to Glasgow.

I would consider that a separate accent entirely, and you'd have to speak it and be exposed to it to really understand what they're saying. Arm just doesn't make you have to learn levels of accents, you either have them or you don't.

Also, I'm convinced even the Scots can't understand half of what people in Glasgow say.

I'm personally fine with people role-playing or accents by typing them weird or just talking normally and letting theveryone coded accent accentuate. Most people I've run into have something physical or psychological that makes them talk different than the others who share an accent with them.

When I play rinthis they talk just like everyone else, except after I type out what they're saying I go back and put in a bunch of extra swear words.

Leave out every other letter and use random apostrophes.

I like the special little cultural nuances that different groups evolve, but it's also a little intimidating when you think about trying out that group for the first time.  It would be cool if there was a reference somewhere you can access when you make your PC, like clan docs.  Is there?

For desert elves there are. For tribal humans (Seik and Arabet) there are.

Don't know about the others.

I like that there isn't a clan doc for the rinth, for two reasons.  First, the rinth (in my mind at least) is huge, much bigger than a given tribe, so there'd be a lot of differences, not just east and west side, but smaller cultures within, and below.  Second, it allows players to fill in this space.  The rinth has always (for better or worse) been a wild wild west in terms of play, with minimal cultural documentation, where you can have all sorts of strange monsters and monstrosities.

That said, one spot to pick up on 'jargon' is the rumor boards.  When I first started playing, I learned terms like 'pitchcloak' (a soldier in the Arm) and 'southsider' from the rumor boards in the rinth.
