Yeah, I feel that either the other MUDs are having an upswing in voting, or we're doing something wrong.
I voted because it's six in the morning and there are six players on other than myself.
And seriously: TMS is so silly! All those other muds just have some cronjob vote script going. Some don't even have websites, just a cron entry.
I think TMC is a more accurate indicator because it requires you to have an account to vote. It still wouldn't prevent people from having multiple accounts, but at least it's something.
Yeah, I'm fairly certain that the vote tallies from at least a few of the sites above us aren't all come by in manners that are the squeakiests of cleans. That just makes us a scrappy underdog!

Convince the staff to close Tuluk and you'll make a larger effect than being #1 on both websites would bring us in an entire year. Ideas Like the recently added guidelines and facilitation for player-created clans and tribes. Ideas like extended subguilds and skill bumps.
There are other things like this I think the staff could to to boost player numbers. Not more consolidation, just a few ideas people have been asking over the years that probably seem monumental to accomplish, either in effort or in will. But are things I believe we have to power to change, with the right motivation. Things that have been floating around in my head for a while but I always stop short and think "This will never happen" Well, not if I don't try. And more people should try.
You want to vote? Vote with your voices by telling staff how much you want a classless system. Vote for realistic combat that involves targeting, wounds and status effects like bleeding. Vote for ASCII colors being standard in the game, with the option to turn it off if wanted. Vote for more help from staff facilitating the ability to change the game-world and make your mark, without having to make the game a full-time job or spend real life years. Vote for coded C-elf Tribes. Vote for a better tutorial system and easier access to new characters that eases the burden of character approval(a 0 karma player getting to pick a stock character type, for instance). Vote for code transparency to take away the unfair advantage veterans posses over newbies and shine a light on a guild system that inundated with old Diku relics, badly balanced class design, and unrealistic or downright unfun skill progression.
Vote for big ideas, and a bright future is abound. You can also continue to vote on those ranking sites too, and be another drop in the ocean fighting for a position other games "game" the system to obtain. Just don't fool yourself into thinking staff isn't willing to indulge big ideas, because they've been showing they can.
I'd rather just vote every day. Because we get a steady stream of new players from the voting website.
Because I can do all those other things too. But voting is a simple way to let staff know we care about them right back that doesn't require any more effort on their part.

The math: you can vote twice per day on TMS. If the 15 players/staff that are online on the GDB right now had voted twice per day since October 1, we would be in sixth place on TMS with 435 votes.
You can also vote once per day on TMC. If the same players had voted once per day since September 1 (TMC cycles every two months), we'd be in first place on TMC with 660 votes.
We have the numbers to competitively vote on TMS, and due to the stricter account requirements on TMC, we can maintain first place there indefinitely. I'll remind y'all (because yes, I'm a snob) that I vote twice a day, every day, on TMS and have for years. Why? Because I actually participate in and read their forum and clicking the vote button is how I access it. One less bookmark to deal with.
Someone else mentioned in the other vote thread (or maybe upthread here) that we'd likely attract more people if we actually participated in their forums - posted announcements of upcoming RPTs or game changes or whatnot.
The trick to that, to actually attracting more players rather than pushing them away aggressively, is to not be too cheesy and sycophantic about the announcements and respect the forum etiquette there. Basically: update no more often than once a week, and don't bump threads just to bump them ("me too" posts constitute bumpage).
Recently, the ONLY forum references on TMS and TMC to Armageddon have been a copy/paste of a post that's wandering all over the gaming forum world: a warning to would-be players to NOT play Arm. Thankfully, some of the membership on those fora realize that it's a lot of personal drama and head-butting between the member and the staff, and not much to do with the game itself.
But there were people who were quick to take the side of the disgruntled player, without knowing all (or maybe any) of the facts. That can hurt the chances of an incoming playerbase, especially since some of those side-takers are respected members of those fora.
Since there's very little in the way of *current* positive posts on their fora about Arm, they have nothing to compare it to.
So I really really urge people (including staff, which used to be the case once upon a time) to post announcements about significant changes to the game, wide-scale RPTs, maybe even teasers of snippets of published game logs with links so readers can see the rest of the log.
That is definitely a good suggestion to those interested in participating in the MUD community at large.

IMO, staff needs to take a hard look at available plot hooks into both overarching and short-term stories, and the quality/type of stories you're telling. How visible is it? How fantastic is it? How fun is it? Does it invoke wonder and the sense of being a part of something crazy and meaningful?

I just noticed, there's a statistics site called MUDSTATS that has a lot of incorrect information. It's used by some mudders to search for muds, some producers/administrator types to watch trends on their own games, and some players to help form their opinions about the games they're playing.
According to mudstats, we place 18th on topmudsites.
According to topmudsites, we place 6th.
They don't list hourly average play for our game - and yet, it's peak time that is the most significant. So when they do an "average weekly" player population check - they're including the 1 person logged in at 4:30AM eastern time, but they don't indicate anywhere on the site that there is only 1 person logged in at 4:30AM. The average is skewed by the fact that our off-peak times are long and lean.
This doesn't explain an overall downward trend between this year and last year, but it definitely isn't accurate. Averages really don't mean much in muds, precisely because we have peak and off-peak times. If there are an average of 50 players logged in between 8PM and 1AM consistently every night, but less than 10 between 3AM and noon the next day, then those daily averages are going to look abyssmal even when they really aren't bad at all.
So when y'all are voting (which is what you should be doing instead of reading this post, doh), please remember to also play. Play long and hard. Take your Ambien so you can sleepwalk and sleep-play at 3AM. Non-Americans - play! PLAY! Play and vote!

Yeah, Mudstats isn't accurate in the short-term. Data simply isn't collected from our game often enough for it to be so. I don't know how Mudstats works specifically but it definitely doesn't account for the fact that we have peak and off-peak. It is more useful in analyzing information from past times.

If TMS works as a timeout (you vote and then 12 hours later you can vote again) there's a risk of voting twice a day and not having one of them count.

It's kind of cool to Arm above my first Mud ever, Dragon Realms.
Oh man I played DR back in 97? I think, I had just finally convince my parents to go with a local ISP (when that was really a thing) over AOL so I could have an actual internet connection. I even picked up a paper route (when that was a thing) to pay the subscription fees for the game. Holy shit it's been like 19 years... how times have changed.
Because we're hitting 60+ players daily at peak again.
Because I actually think this is the best MUD out there. I like a bit of hack n' slash, but a game has to have more to it than macro movement/killing and generic questing. Even though I'm dying/getting my a** kicked like crazy, the RP is awesome, and Perma-death RULES. (Though I really like some of those dead characters backgrounds I made up.)

A single person voting twice a day should have netted us 48 votes this month. Since we have about 280 votes, that's the equivalent of just six people voting regularly. Or if people just voted once a day, that's 12 players voting regularly.

I feel like it distracts from Player Announcements that have to do with RPTs and so forth. They deserve to discover Armageddon, create a first character, learn a little about the world and the way the game is played, and eventually find themselves in a scene so shockingly intense that they step away a changed person. They deserve the chance to test themselves against that, to find out if they have what it takes to be a part of this thing. Everyone deserves that chance. They won't get it at ANY of the other top 10. It's a crime against roleplaying, tbh.

I would say that the permadeath aspect of Armageddon turns a lot of typical mudders away, which is pretty normal considering that Armageddon has a lot of unique features that aren't part of your general mud (enforced RP, permadeath, no talking OOCly, etc...)
Those who know about these features probably already know about Armageddon (I'm not saying every mudders know but a big chunk of it probably do)

The Mud Connector has been the main community for finding muds since usenet lost popularity. I'd never head of TMS until it became a big call to vote on it as well as TMC. I still think that TMS is not unbiased either but I don't have any real reason to say that except intuition.

Yes. A while ago someone posted a script for Firefox (I think) that basically opened up the pages you would need on a single click, and you just needed to do the final clickthrough.
Really, though, you can just favorite the pages themselves, and open up that favorite as your homepage if you're really serious about it.

Is that actually true? I only play from work now, which is offpeak, and I havn't seen 74 people online in a REAL long time.
I've noticed that, too. It seems to me that the dynamics of mudding have changed rather significantly due to an influx of players from around the world. Where once we would have almost day-long lulls followed by peaks, we now tend to carry a more solid number of players around the clock, with fewer spikes.

I love seeing new reviews on TMC for Armageddon. But the last review was November 11.
Tips for reviews:
Remember these are reviews, not advertisements. Be clear about what you like and don't like, and why. If you say it's perfect and there's nothing wrong with it and everyone should play it, then it's an advertisement, not a review.
Use a template if you have to:
Syntax: intuitive, somewhat intuitive, not really intuitive, not at all intuitive.
What could be better about syntax, or how the game tackles any difficulty (eg. help files, both in-game and on-web)
Examples of syntax that works great:
An example of syntax that misses the mark:
Gameplay: How peak time has changed over the years (it has, if you haven't noticed), whether this appeals to you or not, and why.
Areas in which to play: how the changing physical game world has evolved, whether it appeals to you, and why.
Crafting: it has crafting, here's what I like about it, here's what I think could be improved, and why.
An example of crafting (take a line from one of the help files to show how easy/hard you think it is)
Roleplay: huge world-changing plots created by staff to bring in-game plotlines to whatever changes they're planning for the game world (HRPTs). Significant RPTs that are clan-specific, or town-specific, or group-specific, that give more cohesiveness to the interaction between players and the world their characters live in. Small mini-moments that staff bring to add atmosphere to the game, that have no particular significance but exist just because they and the players enjoy those little moments. Roleplay that has nothing to do with staff, plots created exclusively by players that staff might at some point take an interest in and add their two sids worth via NPC animation or the creation of a coded new doohickie in Lady Jojo's garden or whatever.
