Title: Getting it, and kudos
Post by: Samoa on April 21, 2003, 12:42:35 PM
Every now and then a thread comes up that more or less asks... "When did you 'get' it?  When did the game click for you?"  Well.... this isn't one of those threads.

But, what it is, is a thread to ask.... who helped you do it?  What people did you interact with that made everything 'click' for you?  Who really brought you to an awakening that there's actually a whole world out there, and not just you and the room you're in?

For me...

Kholdarian Oash
Koeishna Oash
Ihsahn Kasix
and
Shylon Borsail

What about you guys?  Who do you owe it all to?

:)

Both of these players I met in 1999 and they were a big influence on helping me learn how to enjoy rp'ng alone. How to think beyond the props that one could visibly see and to use the virtual world more.

This isnt saying that others havent been a big influence since but the post was about whom helped you 'get it'. These two players where the ones that got me addicted to ARM by their fine examples of rp.

I dont know if I should thank them or strangle them for the addiction.  :)

I'd have to say for me, that the ones who helped me "get it" were also some of the people that I had the most fun with as well. Not only did they bring the game world to life, they did it in a way that was funny and awe-inspiring at the same time. I only hope that my current ways of RP are a credit to what I learned from them.

And as I know for a fact that none of these people are still alive, I don't feel wrong in listing them by name.

Ceridwen (a good bard, and an even better friend)
Iakovitzes Tor (showed me the true nature of the nobles)
Menolly(an all around good friend)
Willu/Lilu (a great guard, good friend, and her nickname was the best, go "Tits"!)
Reina (You made a great roommate, and I know we all had loads of fun!)
Kojiro (There's NO way to forget him!)
Lord Templar Isahn (a scary guy, a great RPer)
There are some others who I don't know if I can list because I don't know if they are still alive. But for those of you who figured out who I played, you know who you are.

In order of importance:

Chyra
(thanks for all the great Rp sessions, you really got me to love the game and you're probably one of the best Rpers I've been around)

Brok
(was the one reason I kept coming back to play in the byn, you made the byn enjoyable)

Khalad
(was the dude my first character was friends with, got me hooked on arm)

Bones
(I played with him many times, and he really made everytime enjoyable, dunno if you're still alive out there though)

For me, I don't know anyone really helped me "get it" I just slowly picked up alot of stuff from everywhere while acctually spending a good 10+ hours reading over docs(Four before starting my first character).

But for the most part, the people that have helped really get me into the game more have mostly been people in the Byn over the last... 8 months probably. Specially the one dude who got ripped apart in the arena can't remember his name but he got me going on good on emotes that include the inviroment, vNPCs and the such, although still don't feel completely comfortable using them yet. Can't even remember his characters name but was a great RPer.

The templars and nobility have been helpful. Kudos to the Imms that pick and help shape the characters and point the players directions, and of course to the players themselves.

Oh, most of all though, it was just me.

Title: Pour out a little malt Mead for some dead homage.
Post by: gfair on April 21, 2003, 08:21:34 PM
Individuals:
Khalad - Cool dwarf, friendly to all the abuse, first genuine friendly/friend PC to my own.
Stevith, Sargeant of the Byn.  Stubborn racist bastard, which makes him memorable and appreciated.  Also was a pretty hardnosed Sarge, adding to that.
Kyros - For being one of the few Elves that didn't try to loot anyone of their body armor, helmet, collar, bracers, bow, sword, boots, pants, underwear, earwax, nose hair, or vitality when they're sleeping in a popular room.
Brudig - tough, tough Human in the ring, don't remember too much else other than that.
Rayne - Good Sarge, friendly, well played, saw some interesting possibilities for the game and relationships with him.
Lieutennant Slifka of Tor - great interactions with him, great desc that showed me what a desc could be - really strong image of him from that desc.

~ pours out a little mead for the dearly departed.

And groups I pay hommage to:
Someone - for all the returned mounts, the waived crim flags, the returned packs, the general fuss, tolerating the I'm-not-thinking-right-now requests, etc.
The Gith - the right hand of Charles Darwin
Tarantulas, raptors, Tembo - I'll always keep a soft spot in my heart for you ... to tear open.
Misc. Elves - for forcing me to distrust every one of you lot.
Misc. Nobles - for my first break, for their trust in certain characters, and for the oodles of sid.
Misc. f%#kin thieves - for all the lost gear stolen in broad daylight, I now never take any chances.
Misc. foul magickers - for the absolute meyhem they cause.
Misc. Bynners who attacked in the compound - for a steady source of sid and gear, I have to give thanks.
Misc. dead bodies - for making Nak one of the most profitable places to hang out, thanks for the constant stream of solo PCs deciding that there's no training that could be found in Nak, like there is around Nak.

Post by: Kankman on April 21, 2003, 08:40:26 PM
Well, none of you bastards helped me "get it". Thanks a whole not!

But all joking aside while we're rambling about great people to play with I'd have to say Lord V and Miss P were probably the most fun. You two buggars know who you are..

I don't remember the following character's name, but when I was fairly new he was the first non-twink 'rinther I found. He played a damn mean elf. You know the one in 'Nak with the swollen tongue so he spoke all funny.. Can't remember his name, but I know who played him. Won't mention it here, but I hope you know who you are.

The two best nobles I had experience playing with would both be Borsail actually.. One was the aging hawk-nosed man, who's name I can't remember. Once again, I remember the person who played him but not the PC.

The second being that damn cripple bastard you love to hate.

P.S. I'm still waiting for someone to mention me

I really, really started to -get- it when I met up with a few figures. I hope it's alright for me to state these names, but here goes.

Rebel B- I hope you know who you are, but I'm trying to be unobtrusive here. : P Beware of the Big Red Beast.

Thea the fruitseller
Mishka
Riri
Admin. of P and Rich man V.

Hmm.. most, if not all, Borsail people I've dealt with changed me for the better.

This is kind of a flattering thread.  It is an upper to see an old character listed as inspiring someone else.  Continuing the flattery, here are a few of my all time favorites that really helped show me some aspect of the game.

I can't really point to a character that got me to get it.  I sort of fell into getting it gradually and a lot of it was either through advice on the GDB or inspired by chance encounters.  That said, Sujaal, Kellan, and Devon were some of the first characters that I really got a chance to play with for a long period of time that had interesting and dynamic personalities that really gave me a thirst for long term character development.  It wasn't that they were the flashiest RPers I had ever seen (though Devon had more then a few moments that were just beautiful, especially in the end), they just played with personality and style and that really inspired me to try and keep up.

Davaz also has a special place in my heart.  He wasn't the flashest of RPers, but he had such a firm grip on the way Armageddon was supposed to look and feel.  You spend time around some people and you forget you are living in a gritty and harsh world.  Davaz put the harsh back into the world.  You spend some time around Davaz and you learn very quickly the world and the people within it are brutal.  Any time I play a military character I think back to Davaz and remember that sensible brutality of his.  If even a small fraction of the characters in the world played with that sort of sensible brutality that Davaz played with, well, besides there being a lot more bodies in the world, everyone would fully understand the harshness of Zalanthas.

When I first started arm I got to a point where I was equipping my character to go out in the desert and die, after declaring the game 'stupid'

A chance meeting stopped that, the character who changed arm for me was

Ihsahn Kasix

who then introduced me to a couple of others who quickly showed me what arm -could- be

thanks to
Iakovitzes Tor and Riandra.

There have been other great characters who helped the world come alive
special mention to:
Zuleika
Devarin
Eilis

many more recent characters have come and gone who I greatly admire,  but those were the ones I met in the beginning that convinced me to give arm a go.

For first showing me what a good PC leader is:
Khann

For telling me what's right and wrong:
Nessalin
Grady: My girls, sir, they didn't care for the Overlook at first. One of them actually stole a pack of matches and tried to burn it down. But I... CORRECTED them, sir. And when my wife tried to prevent me from doing my duty, I CORRECTED her.
Title: Where to begin?
Post by: ShaLeah on April 22, 2003, 03:18:25 AM
I -have- to start with:

Urvane Mosk - If he had been a good boss I probably would have died within like... a day.

The soldier - I don't know who did it but there was a soldier come to life to explain to my newbie ShaL who Tektolnes was and why I needed to be at devotions, I still marvel that he didn't kill me.

Ihsahn - The dealer in what I like to call a dose of "Armreality".  He was the one who taught me that what you see and hear is definately not what you get.

Stijn - Filthy Krathi bastard, I blame you for my fascination with Krathi PC's -and- saving my first PC's life.

The Byn - Included but not limited to, Zak, Stevith, Thal, Rayne, Kyros, Vopoc, Shekky, Telak... what I wouldn't give to be shoveling shit innocently...

Kojiro Fale - who was a walking, living, breathing roller coaster ride.

Hacket - Grand Berserker of "What the fuck is he thinking?" thoughts.

Vianne - You wench! First true bitch I ever dealt with on Arm.

Laeris - For answering my wish to liven up that bazaar prostitute and other things I hope she knows by now.

Ditredum - For teaching me to separate my characters.

Teeth - My name is Teeth, sometimes it's Mister Teeth.  Hood up outside.  Next time KILL the longnecks, will ya?

Thanna Salarr - For teaching one of my characters that sometimes trust comes a little too late.

Mas - For playing the "Mas?" "Yes, <PC name>?" game with me.

Brekius - AKA Brekinky, you were ruthless and racist and one of these days I wanna be just like you.

There have been so many and the list just continues to grow. I'll shut up now. Really I will. Honest. Okay, maybe just one more...

Alright after some complaining I'll have to include the person from my old MUD who I have no clue how or when I started chatting with her and introduced Arm to me. You know who you are!

And thanks 'My 2 Sids'

I'd also like to include names of some of the great people that helped shape my view, think all of them are from the Byn. First, Tlaloc although mostly a big OOC help when things were crazy OOC, then got Sujaal of course, Kellan, Rinhar, Riel, Sarc, Tash, Payne, Kregor, Ardel, Mishka... Hmm... Some others, specially one of my characters good friends that I mentioned in the last post but don't have his name anywhere.

And yeah... Don't like including so many names but figured I'd get with the trend since noone was yelled at. *Cringes at the thought of getting yelled at*

Yeah.

I didn't get 'into' arm until I played on the criminal side of Allanak.  Ever since then, I've always enjoyed playing the 'bad guys'.  So my influences came largely from them.

Silver, Dar, and Ronin...you guys started it all.
Zagren got me into some nice politics that I never really did before.
Nemphis was badass.
Kune and Kilem took me under their wing for a long time.
When I played in the militia, Ihsahn was my commanding templar and
           you -rocked- at it.
Lord Heeth was the one who got me addicted to arm.  It's his fault I can't stop logging in :P

For me, like some others, my involvement in Arm came in stages.

I blame Naal Borsail and the Borsail bunch at that point for getting a newbie hooked on the harsh realities of Armageddon. And some thanks to the assassin too. You know who you were. You taught me shit happens in game, and one just has to cope with it.

Then there was the crew later on who got the game really breathing for me. Mawr, Leila, Zin, Ishan and that wife of yours, Sathis, Bushman, Chief, Deadeye and the rest of the Black Moon of that time. What a story we wove! It was beautiful.

And to a certain still living elf (You know who you are, you kank jumper!) who taught me how to get into the spirit of a desert elf. Kah!

You all made the game a blast for me. As have the imms, for bringing countless npcs to life or just doing a little something to make the world around me to life.

No one actually made anything truly click, no, that has just been a long slow process...How old is arm now...about that long, minus 3 months.

But I wish to give at least honorable mention.

Riandra, I now compare all chars of that type/position to her.

Blaze, loved that char, did not live long enough, Well played and thought up I thought.

Hacket...Man, most fun RP I've ever had in nak, and with more then one char of mine too, Last one involved a dwarf in the the bazarr, I logged it.

I think I'm getting teary-eyed from one of my fav chars getting mentioned and even by people I have no idea who is/was.

Vianne (Wow...watching you change as a character taught me a lot...)
Hacket (Crazy, zany...in many ways, strangely like Kojiro, yet...different)
Riandra (Always interesting playing with you...Kept me off balance)
Devarin (Your last moments still make me weepy!)

There was a couple of people I left out.

The Dragon.

You took an untested newbie as one of your servants, not thinking twice, never looking back and really got me into the game.  You were somewhat of a powergamer, after all you did become the Dragon, but you still hooked me.  Thanks.

Muk Utep and Tektolnes.

Seriously, thanks alot.  You two were great PC mentors back in the day.  Tek, you always could be a little heavy handed setting me on the right path, but it worked, and Muk you kept me coming back all those years.  Too bad we all three went our seperate ways, Muk going North, Tek going South and me getting heavy into spice in the 260's.

Those were the days boys, those were the days.

There are few characters which stand out in my mind as being incredibly influential to my current enlightenment about the finer points of the game, as well as the larger picture.  However, there are a small handful that I can think of that probably showed me the way the best.

Davaz- Major props to you for getting my mindset out of the carefree adventuring sense and into the more gritty reality of a soldier's life, and life in the game as a whole.

Gores- I don't think I've met a shadier character in all of the time I tried to play as a sneaky guy (to little success).  Oh, and the guy who replaced Gores, he was great too.

Hacket- Cool.  A little batty, but cool, and examples from this character really helped my style  quite a while down the road.

Of course, the blend of all characters I have come across in the past two or three years I have been playing have most helped to develop my sense of the game.

Post by: Sanvean on April 22, 2003, 08:23:09 PM
Jhiran, and his lean, youthful attempts to revive Kohmar.
Enaias, who ended up becoming one of the most irascible sub-elementals in the game.
Gerrol, who became the other.
Shauvia, who remains the character truest to her IC convictions.
Phaedrin, who I spent a number of RL weeks holed up in a basement somewhere with the rest of the proto-Conclave.
Lorial, who was a thug and a criminal and always elegant while doing so
Khann, who I worked for in several incarnations, and who wouldn't hire Alkyone
Nerien, from early days in Allanak.
Rhydun Kurac, who was the craziest of all of them.
Aldane, who was very patient with scatterbrained Whirans.
Serbitar, who was damn sexy.
Sigmund, who was always entertaining.

Cheers to all of you.

Title: Key characters
Post by: Flaming Ocotillo on April 25, 2003, 12:17:41 PM
I've played Armageddon for years, but it took two certain key characters to enlighten me as to what Armageddon MUD could potentially be.

Tobanis Tor is one of the most incredible characters I have ever had the pleasure to RP with in my history of on-line roleplay. He showed me a world that I never truly recognized was there, and when I found it, became addicted to Armageddon. Visions of honor twisted by the harsh reality of Zalanthas, and a peception of self-grandeur derived from the Tor bloodline, he represented everything that he knew to be pure and good, noble and respectable, the knobby plates of his armored boots stepping disdainfully over all those beneath him. It was the character's conviction in his beliefs, evidenced strongly through his actions, his voice, and his demeanor.. that brought not only the character to life, but the world around him which helped shape his world view.

Lius the grizzled old mercenary.. he was everything that was subtle in Armageddon fiction, and that subtlety made him more real than any character I can remember.  An incredibly simple character at first glance, he helped me to understand that sum of many small things was far more thought-provoking than any one single feature. Appearing as nothing more than an aged, scarred veteran of battle, every story he told about his experience as a soldier captured the gritty flavor of Zalanthian realism, without the theatrics and overdone heroism found in most typical fantasy settings. Stories of how one of his old commanders of legendary tactical skill died to a single arrow in the eye, or how his survival in several campaigns was only due to sheer luck, or another man's sacrifice.. those are the stories that bring the wonderful gameworld of text to life.

Of course, the reality is that Armageddon MUD isn't all about ideal RP environments and believable characters. These two characters simply represent what Armageddon can be when played by players of exceptional RP merit and experience.

A kudos to certain players and characters, who have shown me all sorts of things about what Arm represents:

To the player of a current PC whose name I won't mention - for not only playing such an unusual role, but for also doing it flawlessly, dragging me neck deep into the emotions of things, and all the while having a hoot behind the scenes and assuring me that they are FINE with whatever happens.

That break between fantasy and reality can be such a tough thing to handle, so major kudos for reminding me of that.

To the player of another current PC who makes me laugh out loud on my side of the computer on a regular basis. Again, another awesome roleplayer who sucks me into the world.

To the player of that undead elf from several months back who scared the bejeezus out of my PC and showed me a hint of the "darker" side of Arm with that plotline.

To the one who assassinated my first PC... even though I saw it coming, I was too deep into the moment to remember that. And that's what it's all about, really.

Same with the ones involved with my second PC's death.. lousy timing, but awesome moment in my RP experiences. It was one of those "Damn I wish I remembered to log this!" things.

Mostly though, to Sanvean for having the patience of a saint. Swear to everything that's holy, the woman is just ridiculously awesome!

Khann - One of the first pc's I ever met, helped me alot in the beginning.
Gerrol - Realized alot about the virtual population of the world because of him.
Trevelli - Always made me fear the 'evil' people of the game.
Sigmund - Always fun, my enjoyment of playing a half-giant is because of watching him.
Guija - For dying and giving my first elementalist purpose and a reason for extremely long life.

This is interesting.  Question, if characters you played six years ago (or more) come up and hardly any of your current chars do, does this mean you've gone backwards?

A few comments...working backwards over time.

Mansa, quit kissing up!  I don't teach you anymore.
Actually, Mansa, Overone and the others when we played the gith...that was awesome.
Mansa and Overone again...when we played the slaves escaping...awesome, and thanks to Zagren for that.  That entire episode will always be remembered.

Garrick...Buzz, always enjoyed that cold hatred our characters had for each other.  Of course, that means I have to mention Trevelli.

Not sure when I first got it, was probably when I played my first templar.  That was when I realized exactly what you can do if you immerse yourself in the game...so, hats off to Ashina.

Back further, all the way to my first true character...game was quite different back then but I haven't left for almost ten years now...the most impact made on me then was Thrain Ironsword, and I'll always remember Zaerach (nice to see the new road in Tuluk named after him).

There have been many other memorable players who together have made me get what Arm really means.

Thank you to all of you.

A product of the Byn, and Proud.

My first character, when I was a complete newb, Grausam helped me so much. Not because he was especially helpful, but because when he spoke, I got shit done!

More recently, Brok and Brekkin.

But I'd have to say, I've been here, almost(I think) 2 1/2 years, and I've yet to see a poorly played Templar. Props to you all.

For me... a combination of way oldies and a few still breathings...

For the way oldies, I'd really love to thank Khann.  I'm truely glad I didn't hit you with that dart when you were on your last legs, even though I broke character to do it.  Further, I'm glad you didn't jump me when I stepped out, because even with no limbs and a blind fold, I think you'd have wholloped me.

To whatever templar (a name I will never remember) who I was guarding with my HG Rimstalker... again way back in the day.  You helped me understand that a death should never be taken seriously... and those steel bracers you had would have helped a lot, if I'd ever gotten them tailored.

And to Talon, the magicker and bard who my HG died with.  Thanks for being part of my best PC death, and for helping me get my first REAL taste of how brutal Zalanthas can actually be.

As for those still around (or not)...
Sujaal, for teaching me the basics, and for helping me not be a wus.

Brekkin... man.  I can't thank you enough.  I don't think I've EVER seen a dwarf RP'd as well as you.

Kento, for just being totally nuts.  "He did... WHAT?  Not possible."

The infamous and awesome Miss P.  For helping me to understand how the bloody fek emotes work... and more importantly, for helping me to realize there's a line between "Awesome" and "Way Too Much"

Mad props to the randiest cripple in Allanak.  Thanks much.  You know what for.

Daenin, for helping me remember that there is such a thing in Zalanthas as 'friendly rivalry'

Someone posted a while back that they'd never seen a badly RP'd templar, and I definitely back that... but Sadiv in particular.  Every time you walked in to the room, it was like dancing on razors.  Thanks.

The original BloodFeathers... and that blood raven guy.  Without you, desert elves would have just been high movement point stat hounds.

And last, but not least in any way... Robigus.  Bet you never thought you'd see that name up here.  You helped me take my first bite of the soft and chewy heart that is the Armageddon Social Life.  Thanks for killing the fear I had of bars that Sadiv had tried so hard to instill.  *grin*

I could probably go on for hours.  I'll stop rambling.  Monster Kudos to all the immos who made this possible, and all the N/PCs that make it deadly.

Thanks to everyone, to be honest... even those of you who have yet to have Armag 'click' for you.  You help the rest of us to keep it real and to remember that we all have humble origins.

There really hasn't been any one character who just solely made me "get it". I'm still not entirely sure I "get it". :)

There have been a few though who really made me aspire to want to try to get it and "get in the skin" of a character that I'd developed.

<edited, sorry, too recent> were like the earliest standouts when I first started playing that I saw and thought, "Wow. You can really develop a character here."

edited by Delirium: these PCs existed within the last RL year. Send a kudos instead!

Joy, I have a few names in my early days that helped me to understand the setting.

Ayla, of Poet's circle. First to impress me with the Lore of tuluk especially. Sorry I couldn't stick around for the full ride.

Asil, of Kurac. First merchant "uncle" buddy and present across many of my early PCs. Fun to work with as a Kuraci fist member in particular. Shoutout to Arj also! We got matching inks! And Sweet Roll! You showed me the crime scene in Nak for the first time!

Kilaski, of Salarr. Stylishly-RPed leader who put my first merchant through difficult romantic subplot. First one to make me "freak out" as the relationship darkened.. I bailed via storing, I'm sorry, I learned eventually not to bail and tough it out through the bad parts as you had advised me to try to do. You were right.

Hew, the half-giant hunter of Tuluk. This was my first ever 'friend' in armageddon to literally my second PC. Friend to a breed, no less. It's not hard to befriend a half-giant really, but for a total noob all befriending was quite hard then.

Brynn, the breed merchant of Tuluk. Mentorship across many characters. As one of my characters, I worked with one of her long-running mates, Pikks. As a later character, I saw him taken away by Templars of Tuluk to be disappeared. All the built up interactions allowed me to pretty much know her whole life story. Seeing how she responded to trauma after trauma helped me prepare to play a (hilariously similarly named) gemmer in Allanak, which was the first PC I was ever proud of for playing.

Thanks to the above folks I definitely learned the ropes a lot faster than I could have without you. Thank you all for either the hours or the days we spent with each other across time.. oddly, none of the above were ever that close to my characters, but their examples taught a lot even if we had more acquaintance-level relationships. I think that's a key point about how important consistent, exemplary RP is to the game -- not necessarily flashy or world-changing, just consistent and with that bit of extra effort to make the gameworld really come to life.

Zalranris Tenneshi

Hawk the half-elf who used to hang out w/Dream the dwarf

Ehrick the Lyksaean warrior (warrior-slave, I think).

Leisera, the Chosen Consort of Hlum, and the best gypo evar.

Validos Fale, probably my favorite templar that's old enough to talk about. There was a fraught relationship there, as I had a rogue whiran who was mated to a run-off rukkian gemmed (Bryl) under servitude to the Red Fangs. He actually arrested her thinking she was a gypsy when she came into the city due to how she was dressed. He left the cell to go gem a 'gicker, and since he didn't put her in a safe cell for it, she teleported out and contacted him to tell him that basically sorry but she had to bail, she couldn't wind up like her mate did. They wound up having an interesting relationship where from time to time he'd come just out of the gates and they'd hang out inside a carriage and smoke out.

Hanzi/Aarif the gyspy. The why is still probably too sekrit. No coincidence, the above whiran had a multiple year affair with him complete with a kid which he got to keep. Until something took it from him. :D

Lyvrenxice, the other templar old enough to mention. Not realizing she'd killed Validos, and fresh off the experience with a templar who'd be 'flexible' outside the city, I let her trick a sorcerer I had who was about 2 hours old into meeting her in a cave real close to Allanak, thinking to make some sort of accord like, I won't come near allanak if you don't hunt me. My pc escaped with 2 hit points. That was a super tense night. Tried to make an aide for her later, and wound up shanked by an Oash noble. >.>

Anthinius Oash and I think it was TheWanderer who played the other Oash noble, the first gemmed I had. Wound up working for them. Got whipped on the balcony of Red's Retreat for the plaza to witness and forbidden from talking to anyone who wasn't gemmed basically. That was a weird experience and spurred a lot of interesting plots. Probably my 2 favorite Oash nobles ever.

There's 2 really kickass Borsails that I want to mention but both have been within the past year and one of them is still alive.

Omar the Salarri Sergeant. Apparently there was some sort of downspiral toward the end, but the single most fun I've ever had as a Salarri was working as a hunter under him.

Heejo. Nuff said.

There's more but I am rambly enough at this point.

13 year old necrothread. WOW. Fun fact: I'm pretty sure the topic title doesn't refer to the kudos request system, because it didn't exist. So don't get confused. I don't remember who helped me "get it". Group effort. There was a kurac bastard played by Clegane that opened up my mind to the idea of really immersing one's self in a scene and making it -badass-.

I think High Templar Serilla really helped one of my older characters really get the basics of the game, and just how Templars should really be.

There was also a Northern Mul in the Legions, who I thought I REALLY knew, and then the RP started coming out and I started to respect and understand the 'property' piece all over again. Sometimes you get one that is just perfect, and really accentuates things, but I don't remember who it was.

I still don't think I -really- get the game, and so many others definitely do. I don't know if it just 'clicks' at some point, or if I'm really a doof.

I really like this thread.  Even though none of my characters are mentioned it really shows appreciation to the idea that characters can make a huge difference to not only the game world but to other players.

If I could be the spark to a player or two and never do anything that gets put into the history of the game,  I'd consider that a win, but more often than not these things coincide with one another. This is an awesome thread!

Mine are Gin and Quick, Samos, and when I first started my Byn crew was pretty stellar. Really got my creative engine going back then.

Oh, who made it "click" for you.

So, originally, and mind you this is roughly 2002:

Kojiro Fale - inspired me to play my first noble and got to play with him
Amos of Kadius - I know, SUPER generic, but this was the first Amos I knew.
Ysania of Kadius - same time period as Amos
Ishan(sp?) - Super Scary Templar played by an imm back when they could do that, but was GREAT

Now, my comeback in 2008(I had taken a 2-3 year break):
Serilla and Elethan - I dunno what House they were from, but kick-ass templars that I really enjoyed
Ranak - Legion turned Hlum. My PC thought he was an idiot at first, but ended up suporting him. His player is also super awesome!
Shabago - Staffer, but brought to live an NPC that really brought conflict to my PC and helped my RP a ton.

There were others from the 2008 time period that really got me going into the game again, but I'm forgetting them.

Post by: Reiloth on January 09, 2017, 01:52:19 PM
2002/03 - Durg. That long-armed dwarf probably made the difference between me sticking with the game (and Tuluk for so long) and just quitting after my 5th PC in a row died to a beetle in Red Storm. Took in my crafter Aelithor, and the rest was history.

2003/04? - Priest, Malifaxis' Half Giant. I hadn't really been around half-giants or thought much of them, but his RP as this half-giant really struck a chord with me. I compare all half-giants to him, even now, twelve years later.

2006 - Cammul Tenneshi. Was a RL friend of mine, but his writing and acting as Cammul really hooked me into the game. Got into great shenanigans with him.

2006 - Felysia / Eunoli . Same era, but really nailed the Lirathan Templar to me. I only got bent once or twice by Felysia, and it was in the most beautifully subtle way, that I never even suspected or knew Lirathans were capable of such things until much, much later (RL Years). They were also incredibly badass during the Copper Wars. I later read Felysia's diary when I played Hederai Negean, and was impressed with her kill count.

2006 - The Labyrinth Elves. Haruch Kemad, Naenn'Tru. Bhagharva (for all his good and bad). Nasty things that go bump in the night. Hell, i'll even give a shout out to Gin and Quick, though I didn't think they were the 'best' part of it all, they definitely gave it that flavor. It was the first time I saw 'the dark side' of ArmageddonMUD, and it was a beautiful thing to be a part of. There was a group of Elves playing together around that time, all from different families (Valuren, Dairiki, Sandas, Kanosh) and they liked each other, but were also separate. There were great tests of loyalty and trust, and it was my first city elf (playing in the Haruch Kemad). It showed me a different side of Armageddon.

2007/08 - Nyr (As a Storyteller!), Kon, Vash, Midge, Khortoc Salarr, and Expansion Division. Though it wasn't a sustainable model, I was a hop skip and a jump from taking a long break from the game. This group of people had me laughing out loud almost every time I logged into the game. It was just a wonderful synergy, and a great time to be playing the game. Also one of the only times I enjoyed playing in Allanak. Nyr also did a wonderful job portraying Raital Salarr in all his creepy mannerisms.

Looking back, all these inspiring people definitely helped 'make' the game for me, an environment that I continually wanted to be a part of. I'm not sure the moment it clicked for me. There were several moments I suppose -- These were all pivotal moments for various reasons. Certain things didn't click before, and clicked after that. There are always rocks to overturn, and people to inspire you to RP better by example, even if some of the more obtuse 'mysteries' of ArmageddonMUD are no longer mysterious to me.

Oh man I remember teaching those guys how to emote and shit back in the day. It's incredible how they grew up. Newbie success stories the both. I can't remember how many times I intervened as a player to keep Kazi from getting dead.

Trooper Fatty was glorious, too.

I forget her name, but EvilRoeSlade's Salarri family member around that time was a character who really helped me learn to emote. Heuna? Huena? Something like that.

Rokov Kurac. Ceylara Borsail. Elithan Winrothol. There were some incredible high-level/long-lived leader PCs around that time.

And a little bit later, gosh, does anyone remember a claw-handed guy named Abisaid or Abisayed or something around that time? That dude taught me how to emote spooky stuff.

Later on, there were some incredible desert elves who really brought that flavour of the world to life for me: Stare of Many Faces, Silent Dancer, an Akei who went by Thorn.

That she did. She also had 2-3 templars assigning her targets to kill, on a very regular basis. I found her to be interesting to be around.

PCs who were important to me, in the "getting it" sense, were Aja Driamusek, Goor of Kurac, Serpent of the Guild (and the staffers at the time), Malken's Kadian First Hunter back in 2005, the Akei Stare of Many Faces, and a whole bunch of others I don't remember at this very moment.

In addition to listing some of the characters who really helped me grasp the game, I'd also like to show some of their actions that encapsulated what these players were capable of doing with their dialog, their emotes, and their writing.  These logs are all 10+ years old, the characters in them long gone, and they reveal nothing sensitive about the game's more mysterious elements, so I assume it is all right to post them.

If not, staff can let me know and I'll take them down.

Ceylara Ellandris Borsail - Everything about this character was amazing and I still think about how perfectly she seemed to embody vast wealth and privilege in a crapsack world. To my characters at the time, she seemed all powerful. She manipulated people, had spies everywhere, really took the time to pull me into plots, and was so in touch with the virtual world of Nakki politics it was spooky. When I played my Borsail noble I thought about her all the time - I even used her middle name as my character's name, in tribute.

Quote from: Ceylara Ellandris BorsailAt a plush, blue-cushioned divan, you overhear the slight, silver-crowned woman say in sirihish, with a lazy smile:
"After all I've done for Nenilia, maybe she'd be a doll and let you show me some of the designs that you people keep hoarded away."

The slender, pitch-haired young man casts a thoughtful look down at his paper, then back up.

At a plush, blue-cushioned divan, you overhear the slight, silver-crowned woman say in sirihish, after a moment, more decisively:
"And stay away from crimson unless it's something I'll -absolutely- fall in love with. Half the family is going to be wearing crimson."

At a plush, blue-cushioned divan, you overhear the slight, silver-crowned woman say in sirihish:
"But not me. Ceylara Borsail stands out."

At a plush, blue-cushioned divan, you overhear the slight, silver-crowned woman say in sirihish, more quietly:
"And.. just on the very slight off chance... you two wanted me to adore you for the rest of your careers..."

The slender, pitch-haired young man's dark gaze fastens on the slight, silver-crowned woman again.

At a plush, blue-cushioned divan, you overhear the slight, silver-crowned woman say in sirihish, lifting a hand to her earrings:
"I have diamond earrings already. I want to take a step higher. Silver studs. Or maybe copper. Some kind of metal."

At a plush, blue-cushioned divan, you overhear the slight, silver-crowned woman say in sirihish:
"I may very well be married at this banquet, you realize. I'll be damned if I don't look fabulous doing it."

--------------------

Thialle Borsail - This bastard froze my blood with his sarcastic cruelty, and eventually got me killed, but I don't care. He truly seemed to see the common people as little more than animals, was manipulative and mean, was completely focused on his own affairs, and really brought the darker side of Allanak to life. I wish I saw more crazy nobles like him today (there was one, recently, who reminded me a lot of Thialle...but took it to eleven.)

Quote from: Thialle BorsailSmiling into his slender, blue-rimmed wineglass pleasingly, the chiseled, mercurial-tressed man asks you, in sirihish:
"Sathis, repeat after me.  Are you ready?"

Appearing slightly confused, but nonetheless compliant, you say to the chiseled, mercurial-tressed man, in sirihish:
     "Yes my Lord."

While shifting the aim of his coal-dark eyes on you, the chiseled, mercurial-tressed man holds his slender, blue-rimmed wineglass.

Topping off his wineglass and recorking the bottle, the chiseled, mercurial-tressed man says to you, in sirihish:
"My Lord, I think it would be best if you whipped my back as punishment for my foolish behavior."

The chiseled, mercurial-tressed man lazily sips at the contents of his wineglass and gazes skyward contemplatively, as though testing the quality of the wine and oblivious of the conversation.

Cheeks flushing shamefully further, gaze falling even more, if such were possible, you say to the chiseled, mercurial-tressed man, in sirihish:
"My Lord, I think it would be best if you..."

The chiseled, mercurial-tressed man futilely attempts to wrestle the smile of his face as he watches you.

Squaring her shoulders a little in resolve and beginning over, you say to the chiseled, mercurial-tressed man, in sirihish:
"My Lord, I think it would be best if you whipped my back as punishment for my foolish behavior."

Feigning shock with a widening of his eyes upon you, the chiseled, mercurial-tressed man says to you, in sirihish:
"My, my.  Do you really?  You know I've always valued your counsel, Sathis - I'll have to trust your judgement on this, as always. To the post, then."

The chiseled, mercurial-tressed man turns and saunters away, violent winds billowing his robe to life, hair streaming down his back.

--------------------

Sergeant Zee of the Wyverns - A character with great pathos and depth, yet so much outward stoicism it took me a long time to truly know him. Made me realize how important it was to have a multi-layered character, and how effective that could be, dramatically.

Quote from: Sergeant ZeeAt your seat, the white-haired, olive-skinned man says in sirihish, placing his hands on your shoulders:
"You need to take care, Sathis. I understand that things have become complicated very quickly. I am not telling you what to do, simply telling you the situation, as I see it."

At your seat, the white-haired, olive-skinned man says in sirihish:
"I do not wish to kill you."

At your seat, you say in sirihish, glancing up and over his shoulder at the battlestaff protruding there:
     "That doesn't mean you wouldn't."

At your seat, the white-haired, olive-skinned man says in sirihish, genuine kindness in his usually simple tone:
"I like you. A lot. I have not enjoyed myself as frequently as I have since I met you."

At your seat, the white-haired, olive-skinned man says in sirihish, tone hardening again:
"But my duty is to the House, and my loyalty is to Borsail."

At your seat, the white-haired, olive-skinned man says in sirihish:
"Understand that I have never, ever harmed an Allanaki before. It is something that I would never wish to do."

At your seat, the white-haired, olive-skinned man says in sirihish:
"But I would take my own life, if so ordered."

--------------------

Lord Templar Vlorvaldorax Borsail - Scared the crap out of me as a newb while also being kind enough to atmospherically involve a new player in his affairs. An inspiration to me when I played my own Templar later on. Great writing, believable, and funny to boot.

Quote from: Lord Templar Vlorvaldorax BorsailMaking his way along, his tone a low rumble, the runic, bull-necked templar says, in sirihish:
"Good.  Prove useful enough to me, and you will go very far, girl.  Now... when you leave these gates, look scared, and run off.  I won't have anyone knowing I was kind to you."

The runic, bull-necked templar places a fierce, wyvern-skull mask onto his face.

Fitting his mask onto his face and looking down at you, hand tightening on his bronze-inlaid bone battleaxe, the very tall and thick templar wearing a fierce, wyvern-skull mask asks, in sirihish:
"You and I are in perfect understanding?"

Dropping her gaze, the frayed, chaotic-haired girl nods.

The very tall and thick templar wearing a fierce, wyvern-skull mask sends up a call to the wall to open the gates.
The very tall and thick templar wearing a fierce, wyvern-skull mask opens the gate.

The very tall and thick templar wearing a fierce, wyvern-skull mask walks north.
You follow the very tall and thick templar wearing a fierce, wyvern-skull mask, and walk north.

Chasing you out the gates, the very tall and thick templar wearing a fierce, wyvern-skull mask shouts, in sirihish:
"Run!  Run, Stormer, and take your heathen ways with you!"

run
You speed up to a fast run.

Cringing away from him with a terrified squeak before taking to her heels, you exclaim to the very tall and thick templar wearing a fierce, wyvern-skull mask, in sirihish:
     "Yes, Lord Templar!"

n (hands held over her face as if crying)

Templars' Way [NS]

--------------------

Lord Cammul Tenneshi - This character's emotes were incredible. So vibrant, off the wall, and well written that I still think about them. He was capable of bringing a scene to life like few other players I've encountered, and it left a huge impression on me as a newer player.  Whenever I want to chew the scenery, he's always in the back of my mind. I'd say after ten years of practice, I could match him in a battle of wits at this point, but I'm still not sure that's true.

Quote from: Lord Cammul TenneshiIssuing the words in a slow hiss as though through a filter of sedge, the gloriously-maned, corpulent man asks the white-haired, red-skinned man, in northern-accented sirihish:
     "Whaaat...am I goooing...to doooo?"

Avoiding his eyes, the white-haired, red-skinned man says to the gloriously-maned, corpulent man, in northern-accented sirihish:
"I'd...rather refrain from offerin' my lesser opinion, Sir...though I haven't any opinion at'all."

Eyes lifting upward as though chasing an ascending thought, the gloriously-maned, corpulent man says to the white-haired, red-skinned man, in northern-accented sirihish:
"Well thats good, Kurnim.  You're not much of a thinker."

Hawking up a grotesquely viscous glob of saliva and spitting it onto a flagstone at his feet, the gloriously-maned, corpulent man says, in northern-accented sirihish:
     "Drov-be-*aaawwwk*damned. *Ptew*"

Ire swelling in those heated eyes, sucked behind the fat of his cheeks, the gloriously-maned, corpulent man says, in northern-accented sirihish:
     "Tek's Fortune!  Damnit!  Damnit all..."

Warding him with the heat of his angry eyes, the gloriously-maned, corpulent man exclaims to the white-haired, red-skinned man, in northern-accented sirihish:
"Give me some room to think, man!"

The white-haired, red-skinned man immediately backs away from the gloriously-maned, corpulent man and averts his eyes.

At your seat, you say in sirihish, pushing off the dumpy, twin-braided dame's curvy, padded shoulder, straightening from her wilted and stagefright posture:
     "What's he talking about?"

At your seat, the dumpy, twin-braided dame says in northern-accented sirihish, shrugging vaguely and forcing her gaze regretfully away from the gloriously-maned, corpulent man:
"I have no idea. His Chosen Lordship is looking for someone."

Lifting a hand to his right temple, regaining his composure at least for the moment, the gloriously-maned, corpulent man says to the white-haired, red-skinned man, in northern-accented sirihish:
"Jochebed has already reached the stage..."

Moaning defeatedly as he gazes up at evening's empire, the gloriously-maned, corpulent man says to the white-haired, red-skinned man, in northern-accented sirihish:
     "Less than two days..."

His eyes still settled upon the ground for fear of causing offense, the white-haired, red-skinned man asks the gloriously-maned, corpulent man, in northern-accented sirihish:
     "What will you do, Sir?"

Despondently, the gloriously-maned, corpulent man says to the white-haired, red-skinned man, in northern-accented sirihish:
     "I don't know."

The gloriously-maned, corpulent man says to the white-haired, red-skinned man, in northern-accented sirihish:
     "Something."

At your seat, the dumpy, twin-braided dame says in northern-accented sirihish, sighing dramatically:
"Maybe something's gone wrong? And it's obviously not the Chosen Lord's fault."

At your seat, you say in sirihish, with a reverence approaching stoicism:
     "Obviously."

At your seat, the dumpy, twin-braided dame says in northern-accented sirihish:
     "Couldn't be."

And suddenly, with an impulse as whimsical as the winds themselves, the gloriously-maned, corpulent man locks his gaze upon a small white stone bench, staring for a prolonged while.

Strutting his stuff - of which he has a sluggish abundance - over to the bench, lifting his voice to the stentorian, the gloriously-maned, corpulent man exclaims, in northern-accented sirihish:
     "You there!  You two!"

Ah man, Laura, I remember all those characters fondly. Really wish I still had logs from back then. That hit me with the nostalgia hammer.

I really wish I could remember the name of Apocalyptic_Cow's Salarr mul because he was incredible. Murk from Kadius, too. 2008-09 was a fine vintage for muls.

Prystik, of the Jaxa Pah.  First enemy.  Great example of an elf.
Ratbait, the sorcerer.  Best kidnapping scene I've ever experienced.  First introduction to magick.  Got me all scared and shit.
Omar, of Salarr.  Was batshit crazy by the time we met.  Totally unpredictable.  Has influenced future crazy characters.
Kilaski Salarr.  Had that "epic adventure" thing going for him.
Tasok Salarr.  Really exemplified "successful merchant."
The Devourer, a mul that worked at the Mantis.  Brought me into rinth life with my favorite rinther, Amos.  We didn't interact much, but it was enough.
Hawk.  The scariest mul I've ever met -- reacted to things, like knives being drawn, just how I would expect a mul to.  Will definitely influence future mul play.  Also didn't interact much, but it was enough.
Hasan.  Much later in my career.  Ignoring all the crazy magick shit, was a good leader PC.  Kept my PC busy even though he was sort of codedly gimped, in terms of getting around, out where he was camped.  Very good at giving out tasks, which I think is important as a leader.

That's what comes to mind thinking about "getting it."  There are plenty of other PCs I've interacted with that were super badass, of course.

The character who made me interested in the game was Wisp, the Tuluki government assassin.

Man, she killed so many people.

I had the honor of being the last person to see her alive and telling her that she was probably doing something really dangerous.  I was right.   8)

Oh right, Anthony was around that time too! Poor Anthony was indeed awesome. Shame you stored him.  :'(

That said, your Seumas and everyone's favorite templar Kishime were probably the two top PCs that made the game 'click' for me as a newbie.

Veric-da of Kurac, Adlock of Kurac.  Barvel of Kurac.  Somat of Kurac.

Veric was the shit.  Adlock and Barvel brought it all together.  I think a shout out to Fianna Salarr and her erdlu "Bitchripper" is overdue.

Anyone with a name like Varric Tethras is bound to be good.

I'm not sure -who- made it click for me. I'm trying to consider. I guess and instance of 'getting it' would be the Dragean versus Raleris feud. It was completely Tuluki and made Tuluk click for me, inside my head. I think that's why I've always preferred Tuluk to Allanak: Seeing them jab at each other, the subtleties, just how artful and terribly degrading it was.

In Allanak? I guess it would have to be Validos Fale. He commandeered Ayla's beetle one day from her and rode it around from Red's, to Caravan's, down Templar's, then back down Stonecarver's like a mad man: it was like, Validos says, "Give me your beetle," Ayla blinks, bows, is weirded out, hands the reins over, and ... then he came back almost frothing at the mouth. Then, he found out she was a Tuluki, training in Kadius in the south, and he leaned over her one day and whispered that he would tie her naked to a pole in the bazaar so that everyone would see her horrid inks and spit upon her like the animal she was. To me, while they were just threats, they were credible and scary. I mean, Allanak doesn't need a brash templar to kill -all the fucking things- but I think Validos was scary enough. He was also whimsically insane and could be charming at once and a complete shit head the next day. He was just really... Allanak, in a nutshell, for me.

Icumen Borsail also taught me a lot - I'm confident I'd do a 'Nakki noble better next time because of him. Um. Hmm. Oh!

Bam - was she ever adopted into Kurac? - was the best. Oh. And Goldy. I've always loved Kuraci PCs, though, so maybe I'm biased. But she was a fuckin' blast.

I'll think of more and update this.

I thought about both of you guys, but Antony came a little later (when I'd already grasped the game) and I just didn't spend enough time with sleek chocolate-skinned (I'm sorry, I've forgotten the name but I remember it started with an A, didn't it?) to really get a good feel for her! I'm sorry! <3 You were all awesome.

I haven't been certain if I want to chime in since I'm still six weeks shy of my two year mark. But, even though the PCs who taught me the most are quite recent, I figure they're deserving of recognition.

Aaleyah Terash - for answering literally thousands of questions, both IC and OOC. And for setting a sterling example of role play that I hopefully learned to meet.

Lucith Borsail - for teaching me just how kind, magnanimous, and terrifying a noble can be.

Cassius - for teaching me the grittier side of the game and showing me how you can constantly try to screw over your best friend and still love one another.

I wouldn't be the player I am without these three.

You are welcome.  I have been thinking of doing another round of way-back-when kudos with examples! It was fun to take a trip down memory lane.

It is interesting to note that when I think of the people who influenced my play the most, and I see the people mentioned in this thread, there is a high percentage of leader PCs among them. (I do have fond and enduring early memories of non-leadership/sponsored roles as well, which I will try to focus on next.) It just goes to show that as a leader, there is a high chance new players are watching you, forming first impressions on the game based on your behavior, possibly falling in love with the setting thanks to you. People look up to their leaders. It is just human nature.

Food for thought. No pressure, guys! ;)
