Title: Why Paper
Post by: ermanmutlu on August 04, 2004, 03:51:13 AM
Why is there paper in the world? I mean, if nobody knows how to write or read, how did they produce paper? If you consider ancient people in real world, you can see that they had not have paper, but they were using some other things (for example clothes). In addition, they were using them to express themselves. In other words, they used them because they need something to write.
In this Mud, why did people produce paper? I think it doesn't make sense. :?:

Quotenobody knows how to write or read

Wrong, some people do. Some speshul people.

QuoteHelp Read:
...nobles and templars are trained in the arts of reading and writing and the Merchant Houses pass along a knowledge of how to write the trade-ciphers associated with Cavilish to their agents and merchants...

Precisely.

These super-rich people make producing paper a pretty profitable business.

Not to mention that not being able to write does not mean one is unable to draw paintings or sketches, and for that reason, it is also possible to find cheaper alternatives to precious wood.

You can also wrap things in it, draw on it, and wipe your butt with it!

There are tons of things in real life that have no real purpose, but it is still made, solely because it can be made.  Although there are a few problems in your arguement, as lots of spells are put on paper (parchments), and paper is usefull for more then just writing, as moab pointed out.

*cough*

Maybe (or maybe not) parchments can be used for writing down spells, but since, you know, magick is a bad thing and "true magick" (what defilers and sorcerers do) is a REALLY bad thing, I'd say that just about any hawker who goes "our scrolls take spells better than the other guy down the corner's!" will probably be turned into a pile of ashes before the day is through.

But who knows. :P

Personally, I think paper is used simply because nobles want it.  If nobles want it, it immediately becomes a good thing to trade in.

I would think paper in arm is more like muslin paper then anything else - good for cooking on mostly.

Then again im thinking of somthing WAY diffrent.
