Title: Glance command

With my luck, there's already something that uses the syntax 'glance', but I was thinking it'd be a handy command (with no echo) that just returned the sdesc, visible equipment, and condition of the person glanced at.  In other words, it's a non-echoing "look" that doesn't return the mdesc of the person.

Outside of a crowded setting, I think that somebody should always be able to tell if you've looked at them, no matter how brief.  So I don't like this.

i like the idea. but it isn't one of those necessary fixes to something that's broke. So I don't think it should be high priority.

If you want to glance, in the meantime, just type

:gives a quick casual glance at ~rhino
look rhino

Or, instead of doubling the emotes, just do..

look rhino with a brief, casual glance over

Yeah, I certainly wouldn't call it high priority by any stretch of the imagination.  Just something that the last MUD I played on had and seemed relevant based on some of the other discussions on the board.

Though....

For some time, I've always wanted larger sdescs.

What would be ultra spangly neato is another field with your sdesc and mdesc. Like gdesc.

A mush I used to play had something like this, where you could do a 'glance' and instead a 'look'. Instead of seeing the mdesc, you would see a short(er) desc which would give you a bit of info you might get on a person without going into bloody detail. 2 lines or so.

That said...(I'm rolling now)....hdesc would rule as well. If you were cloaked or masked you would see this instead of the mdesc.

Peek does a little more than what I had intended, as well as being associated with a more keen interest in someone's belongings than a mere glance.

If I'm facing your way, I'll be able to tell what colour your cloak is, or whether in fact you're stark naked. You already have an echo to tell you that I've faced your way, with "X has arrived from Y direction". (Sure, there's a corner case where I might be walking backwards or looking over my shoulder, but that's the exception, not the rule). There is no need to multiply that echo into telling you I've glanced you over as well - of course if I'm walking toward you I'm going to see something of your gear.

I'd be in favour of a minimalist glance though, giving out maybe only cloak or torso location items, perhaps sleeves and pants and back-worn items, larger items in the hand, maybe a first sentence of ldesc - certainly not every piece of jewellery or shoulder patches.

I share somewhat the same thought, except I'd like to see shoulder patches. When my character looks at people, it generally is for one of two reasons: interested in seeing who they are, or looking to see who they're affiliated with. Sometimes I'm able to get around the look spam for the latter by just l soandso's cloak/aba/bisht/sleeves/armbands or whatever, but glance would be nice.
