Title: City Scavengers
Post by: DrunkenSalarr on February 19, 2004, 06:24:00 PM
Something Realedazed said in the OOC forum got me thinking.  I'm sure there are some sort of city scavengers in Zalanthan cities.  I could see there being different types in the different cities.  I know there are rats in the 'rinth (or at least there were a few RL years ago when I last went in there), but I'm talking about other types of scavengers for the rest of the city and other cities.

I could very easily see pigeons and the like in Tuluk, maybe in 'Nak as well.  I could see small (read: pigeon-sized) lizards and bugs in either.  Now? what good would this be, other than RP?  If it was legal to catch/subdue them, you could to take home/to the slaughter-house to turn into food (new food source for lower classes).    If they were given a high agility, it could be very entertaining.

It's just a random idea that I thought I'd throw up in the air for you to think about.

Great idea. Adding this to the list of NPCs I need to write up.

-Venomz feverishly works on ten projects at once, and deftly at that!

That sounds like a great idea. Glad I kinda inspired you. :)

But I can really see this happening. Actually, I thought something similar was already in place since there are 'rats' in this world already. Well, I didn't read the file on them yet and I really think I should since a Arm rat might be something completely different from what I think it is.

I dunno, I'm soured on the idea, mostly because of what I've seen happen in other muds, where people who don't have the desire to skin it, because it's worthless, just go around wantonly killing things and leaving their corpses around.

It just ends up looking too much like a H&S.  At least, that's my opinion.

The idea has potential. I like.

Yes, but killing them in most places would probably be considered illegal.

Birds are rare in the south. Brakahan lizards can fly, but there would not be at most times of the day flying creatures above allanak. The winds would either make it impossible or highly dangerous with the debris. Plus the unobstructed glaring sun on them at all times in the sky... without the benefit of abas or such.

And silt-flyers tend to stay by the silt.

A vulture is a large enough bird to survive the southern winds. I am suprised that there are not more of these birds in population. They should be nearly as numerous as scrab, and I don't mean in one place. I mean in nearly any area.

I like the idea about having more around, at least in descriptions or atmosphere echos.  Not sure I like the idea of killing/catching things out on the streets of the cities.    Especially the major streets - it would seem pretty silly to have people chasing little animals around.

Silt Flyers ... pretty nasty creatures ... tho they seem to be restricted (as their name implies) to the coast of the Sea of Silt.

Huh... That'd be one funny rat. 7-8 inches long. Hopefully not with the tail as that'd be one horrible small rat, with at least a quarter of that in head? Wow.

That's not really that big of a rat. When I go looking for a pet rat I go looking for something about that big. Sure the common rat is ussually half that size on Earth I wouldn't say that's make that one big... Just with a large deformed head.

Try these feckers on for size:

"Adult nutria are about 14 inches long from the nose to the base of the tail.  The tail itself is 12 to 17 inches long, round, and hairless."

Nutria are small ugly beavers. That tear the shit out of stream banks and fuck up irrigation and such.

Creeper used to hunt them on his grandpa's farm. They are also VERY stupid.

That's your opinion and you're welcome to it, even if it is a typically lazy and short sighted one.

Go spend some time browsing the internet forums, it doesn't matter which ones, because they're almost all riddled with people posting like a kitten had a seizure on their keyboard. The second it becomes A-OK to post something minor, someone will want to bump it up a bit to be more "rebel" or "1337" then the next person, or whatever the fuck your average AOL user wants to be. How can you tell them no, when you've already given the stamp of approval to someone else's "unique" form of "expression"? Is that a road you want to see us go down?

I'm sure someone is just itching to hammer out a 'wow, elitist bitch' post about now and that's fine, go for it, give me all the hell you can manage if that tickles your fancy, but do it without the kiddy chat room speak.

I should have posted my comment in the OOC forum, in the Derailment thread, or even better, I should have PMed Callisto about it, rather than mess this thread up with it. I am sorry.

To remain on topic, I think the room echos are likely the best idea to bring the city scavengers to life. Extra descs in a few rooms with the echoes would be good. If there is any catching and such involved, doing so via script would be wiser, likely, than actually placing the NPCs in the cities.

I love the echos in a certain southern tavern's cooking area, or in a certain group's latrine.

Is it possible to do automated zone style echos according to room type?

AFAIK, yes.
