Title: NPCs on the verge of death...
Post by: nauta on June 29, 2016, 12:46:28 PM
Littlest Idea In the Known:

Is it a big code change to have NPCs bleed out and die eventually?  It's not really that big of deal, since you can just pretend it's a different NPC bleeding out that you saw last week bleeding out at that same spot, but...

A whip-tailed turaal says, "Kill ... me ... kill ... me ... please ... kill me ..."

People often leave NPCs in this state so they don't respawn. It annoys me when they do and I try and kill them when I find them. It'd be nice if there was some other code mechanism to relegate that kind of twinky behavior.

What benefit do they gain from the npc not respawning?

Here I've thought all this time that the stupid things were falling off cliffs or being attacked by other npc mobs.

Less chance of having to fight the mob again on a return trip is the biggest benefit I see.

Sometimes people forget to turn mercy off, I get it, but most of the time I'm pretty sure It's ooc and lameness.

I think its weird you can find the corpse of a npc next to the npc.

I feel like I'm playing the game wrong. 90% of the time I'm wandering around out there I'm LOOKING for something to fight.

I either want fun, meat, hides to sell, or to feed my skill-up addiction.

I've witnessed the "leaving of the near-dead" a few times. The reason for it at the time was pretty straight-forward and not nefarious at all: they were aggro mobs that were attacking, and our party wasn't out hunting. We were simply trying to get from point A to point B. So we had to fight back, and if the mob didn't die - but instead, stopped fighting us, that was good enough. That was the only reason we fought them in the first place - because they attacked us while we were travelling in their territory. We needed them to stop doing that. Getting them "near dead" solved the problem and we continued on our way.

It also solves the future problem of the mob not respawning and re-aggroing you later. It's code exploitation, even if not done willfully.

Someone get us a Bob Barker image macro reminding us to club wounded animals to death.

Edit to add: even if you don't intend to skin the mob, it's best to kill it when you knock it down. Let it respawn and potentially add to someone else's fun.

I took this to heart and trampled a fallen creature dieing in the wilds.

Then while I was kill-lagged I got jumped by all the hidden stuff that had killed it.

I blame you for this.
