Title: Long-term gripe: A sword eight inches long, including the hilt, is not a sword
Post by: Eyeball on September 26, 2015, 07:34:55 PM
Has anyone ever read of a short"sword" only eight inches long?

Quote
The brunt of this eight inch long weapon's power lies in the sharp tip.
The jagged end of the bone has been carefully sanded to give it a strong
thrusting point.  The rest of the short bone length has been merely sanded
and smoothed and straightened, giving it a simple appearance.  The opposite
end has been wrapped with unidentifiable leather, forming a handle.

Is it a Halfling short-sword?  Because that's less size than a bowie-knife.

I think it's more about the employment of the weapon then the actual length. There's no real SET length on where a shortsword becomes a broadsword becomes a longsword. It's simply a label. A sword so short that you can't employ it for the style befitting a longsword you might call a shortsword or whatever. A hiltless short sword might be considered a long knife or a hanger or whatever, it's all labels designed off how the weapon is purposed.

I did some basic research for my own curiosity and found that it's pretty much how it was accepted in the blade community.

Can you provide one historical example of a "sword" with a four inch hilt and a four inch blade?

Can you typo/bug the item and move on?

I think that's how it was intended to be.

I figure "eight" was supposed to be "eighteen".

Anyhow, I've tried typo, but it's one of those highly resistant ones. Like the entrance to the "rubble-filled" square that has no rubble in it.
