I'm curious, a year later, how people feel now about the GDB. I still prefer the new format - it's easier to administer, to search, and it seems livelier than the old one, but I know that when it first appeared, about a quarter or a third of the regular posters preferred the old version. Is that still the case or have you become reconciled to it?

I perfer the new GDB.

The old one had trouble, once the threads got too long.  It took a lot of bandwitch to get to the latest post.  It was horrible to try and search for a specific topic.

The new one is easier.  I can skip a lot of useless posts that I don't bother reading.  (Like the american goverment stuff.  bah.  i'll be president in 2022)

The 'clan' section is nicer, too.  It gives freedom to the players, more, to influence what is happening with the clan.  It has replaced the weekly emails that some clans used to have, which has some drawbacks...  But it also helps discussions within the players of the clans, on an ooc basis, that isn't limited to email.
It's almost eliminated the IC Boards that some clans have, too.

I preferred the new GDB from the start.  The single complaint I still have about it is that it marks all posts as read when you log out.  Sometimes I don't have time to read all the new posts, or my browser is closed for some reason and I have to log in again.  It's irritating to have to try and figure out what posts I've read, and which are new.

I was one of the "I want the Old GDB Back people" and now I've voted that I just don't care.  I've grown used to the the new one and it does have a lot of nice features.

I still miss one very very nice feature of the old GDB, sub-threading.  It could probably be done with phpBB2 but it would take some major changes to the code to do it.  What would be nice is a link somewhere on the site, or here on this board (the top of the main page somewhere), that linkinks to the Old GDB.  If I'm not at my computer (where I have it bookmarked) I have to find someone who's posted a link to it and find it that way.

But what if you change your sig.  It couldn't hurt to have an official link somewhere.

However...
It's been proven that going through these will create lag in the game.  That's one of the reasons why we switched over to the phpBB2 board.
Maybe they don't want them to be easily accessed, because of that reason.  I don't know.  Go try and ask Nessalin.

I never used the old board, having joined the game since the old board...but trying to go through the old board when people (like mansa) link to it is a pain in the ass.  Me likey new one.

Well... They both have good perks, and bad perks... But over all they both have the same similar function and for the majority of people the new one is easier.

Over all I don't really mind one over the other, although sometimes bright lights and pretty colors are good.

I love the new board, but at the same time thoroughly miss sub-threading, that way on the occasion a thread does kind of get off topic, it stays within that sub-thread.

I don't like the emoticons either, seeing them on the side when I post just bothers me.

The only thing I miss is how the old gdb sent the posts directly to your email. This is especially nice if you're very nosy. Then if posts are later deleted you can still read them. It always made me feel like I knew something I shouldn't. That's kind of fun.

I agree completely.  I mis sub-threading a little, but in many ways I like how threads are more likely to just start somewhere else rather then go off on a tangent.

As for emoticons, I hate the stupid things.  If they were all deleted I would be a happy person.  I personally would like to see all icons and emoticons wiped.  Of course I am a cold hearted bastard.

I used to miss the old GDB, but that was simply because I didn't know how to use this one (oh, the little orange flag means there's a new message? Sweet!)

A year later, I prefer this one greatly when compared to the old one.

I agree with FDMW. I hated this board for about one week. But given a choice now, I would take this board any day over the old one.

Barzalene reminded me exactly of why I miss the old board.  Because of how you could have posts emailed to you.

Its nice to be able to read all the posts without actually having to click through each one.  I do miss that a lot.
