Title: Flavor roles that would work in game
Post by: Saellyn on October 19, 2014, 04:40:48 AM
Title says it all. What kinds of flavor roles do you think could work IG within the realms of hiring?

Some that I feel would work out:
Clerk (or, in this case, Money Handler/Launderer)
Animal caretaker
Dung sweeper (???)
Barracks sweeper
Massage therapist?
Drummer/Instrument player
Flag/Banner Bearer

Quartermaster
First Trooper
Recon Team
Mapreader

It's really all up to your imagination (and your character).

Slightly off-topic, but I love it when people play out all the little flavor things from the docs (that I don't think have been updated to the new website).

Things like white always being fashionable in Allanak, or exposed skin in the south being an implication of poverty. Northern physicians that recommend whiran blood poultices for bad coughs, nobles (again particularly in the south) that play up the extravagant fashion thing. Bards that sing 'classic' songs from the old submissions page like Amos Kanked A Gemmer that give a sense of life to the songs in that they really are well-known pieces.

Rahnevyn's 100% foolproof* way to create a playable flavor role: try this easy formula!

Your character is a <well understood role archetype> who is also a <something interesting for flavor>.

Examples:

Your character is a soldier who is also a hairdresser.

Your character is a Bynner who is also an izdari grandmaster.

Your character is a burglar who is also a masseuse.

Your character is an aide who is also a cook.

Now come up with your own!

*never actually tested; your results may vary. Try at your own risk.

Hairdresser/soldier is a totally valid role. I could see that working really well for someone who wants to hire out to Fale or Kadius.

Dung sweeper (???)

The most fun I've had with a character in the past.. 2 years? Was a simple dung sweeper kid and nothing else. Everyone was trying to change him/get him better jobs but I stuck to just being a dung sweeper and it was great.

We even had a dung sweeping war going on at some point, with the Legion actually telling us which stables we were allowed to sweep dung in on different days. It was ridiculously hilarious.

I have played with sword dancing.

I've tinkered a little with Krath readings.

I think gambling is fun to play with. I never really saw much of it before. Haven't seen any since and seems every time I've gotten a game together it draws attention.

I always wanted to play a gambling pickpocket who cheated with the sleight of hand skill and an extra deck of cards.

Please. Though I'd imagine that could lead to death.

Oh, I did that with an early PC, went to jail a lot, although I used Plant and Steal.  I kept wondering why this trick would bring the half-giants into the Gaj....
