In real life, swords get dulled by use. Therefore, people have long been using whetstones to sharpen their weapons. Even though Zalanthan weapons are mainly bone, wood, and obsidian, I think it would still make sense to have some kind of form to sharpen them.
Quote>sharpen sword whetstone
You sharpen the bone longsword with the gritty, rough whetstone.
I agree it makes sense, but I would file it under a code wish for a broader wear-and-tear system.
Hm.... Given the (supposed) fragility of most Zalanthan weapons, I'm not so sure sharpening weapons would be something in common practice.
I wish weapons broke more often, so you could actually get an idea of, "Why bother sharpening this? That'll just weaken it-- and the last thing I need is for it to shatter when I'm in deep shit."
Or, give Salarr/Kadius/Kurac actual repeat business. "Remember that sword you sold me last year? Finally broke it off Jack's jaw, and I'm going to need another." rather than "Here is four thousand coins, give me all the things then never talk to me again."
If you are just looking for an RP prop, there are certain roughing tools that can be found easily in game.
If you are talking about an actual system...stone and glass weapons are actually knapped, not honed. It's a pretty crazy skill (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Knapping), but I don't know if such blades can be reknapped once dulled. Makes sense if you can knap them in the first place from something dull, I suppose...
To some extent most stone/glass blades can be reknaped...eeesh, is that a word...anyway.
I don't know what game you guys have been playing, but on almost all of my combat PCs, weapons breaking is pretty constant...Oh wait, none of yours ever do more then very hard...my bad.
I have had a few of them even go to the salarr merchant PC and tell them "Hey, would you keep like 3 of those on hand at all times?" Or, and this is more common. "I need 5 of these weapons" Of course they ask, "You outfitting a new crew?" And my PC is like "No, spares...I go through at least one a month."
I have played a character that literally 2-hit a bahamet he hit so hard. I never broke a weapon. Well. I broke someone else's weapon with a kick a time or two, but never my own.
Seems your mileage may vary. And seems some weapons break more than others. I've never noticed any degradation over time or through general wear and tear. I'm not entirely sure that's a bad thing. One can assume their weapons are being honed and when needed, replaced, during their character's virtual life.
And as was mentioned, we have whetstone objects in game if you just want to RP the upkeep in a scene.
Some weapons break more easily than others, obviously. If you choose your weapons poorly matched to your character's size or strength they will break a lot. Choose well and you won't have that problem.
As for whetstones and such, it's safe to assume any workbench or toolkit would have vItems like that included, and there's even actual whetstone objects out there. It would be cool if they could be coded to have an effect though.
I only break sparring weapons.
When I parry.

I've never had a weapon or piece of armor break on me. WTH am I doing differently?
Armor?

Not sparring half-giants.
Weapons?
Not playing half-giants.
You pick up a solid titanium sword.
A solid titanium sword shatters in your hands!
You pick up a solid hunk of granite.
A solid hunk of granite shatters in your hands!
You pthink: "Son of a bitch!"
A pthink shatters in your hands!

Hax! lol
My skilled warriors always seemed to break more weapons than my unskilled characters. Thus X-D's problem.
I have always been of the opinion that certain weapons should break more easily.
I do not know how indepth the combat code is, but it would be interesting to see things like the type of weapon striking the type of armor being taken into account.
Also the type of weapon being parried by the other weapon being taken into account.
Two obsidian swords slamming together repeatedly and neither of them shattering has always struck me as very ooc'ly jarring.
I mostly treat them like metal weapons, because really, they act like metal weapons IRL.
Having just found out about whetstones, I would surely love to see them have a coded use.
Perhaps some sort of add on under armor repair (maybe change the name to make it notable) where whole holding a whetstone, you sharpen said weapon. Giving a risk of breaking said weapon. While increasing the damage the weapon does, it should of course equally increase the chance the weapon breaks during use.
Then you just have to add a sharpen flag to a weapon once it is sharpened. Perhaps not giving a new name given to the weapon, a line in the description "This weapon has been sharpened to a fine edge" And of course, give it a chance to lose its edge and require being resharpened for that effect again, further degrading the integrity of the weapon.
Just by two sids on the matter...
Wetstones and other sharpening instruments exist in game. I guess with the kind of bone Zalanthas has, you can sharpen it. You can possibly reknap obsidian blades. This is something that can be roleplayed out.
