Voting for the month of April surpassed even March! You guys are some serious voting machines, and that is a good thing--there are lots of people out there (apparently?) that are still interested in text-based gaming in general. I've broken down the statistics for this month's survey over here (http://www.zalanthas.org/gdb/index.php/topic,45410.0.html).
TMS for April
We're #2!
2320 votes over almost 30 days, resulting in 914 click-throughs, all because of our #2 position. In the early parts of the month, we were competing far more directly with #3, #4, and #5. We overcame that with a steady voting pace, but it was not easy!
TMC for April
We're #1!
2103 votes over almost 30 days, resulting in 179 homepage clicks. We were able to take over the #1 spot, but keeping it (assuming a reset) will not be easy, either.
Just a wee reminder. 2 hours until the voting reset...
Oh lets see if I can be the first vote!
Hey guys. Vote!
2nd vote! I was close!
v0t3
Vote #4! Punch those ballots!
Let's bring in the vote, and those new players!
Free boots all around!
Let's get on that, team.
ARM's been knocked down to 4th place.
4th!?
Seems we need to break out the terradin and assassins and corrupt, betray and murder our way up to the 1st/2nd place spot again >.>
We're only 16 behind #2 on TMS (and we're #1 on TMC). Good work everyone--keep it up! Let's take #2 on TMS!
Not top 10 at TMC. That's ok though. At least we're losing to quality MUDs, like My Little Pony Roleplaying is Magic.

:) They didn't even reset voting last month. And we can't submit a logo or anything because their submission thingy is broken.
I guess the only way we can make up for that is to be #1. :) Vote!
Tie for #1 on TMC. Lets take that spot with an early lead peeps!
Yarr!
So it seems that other games also see it is important to vote. However, we're not doing as well as we did last month on the first day (though neither are the other games). By 9 PM on April 1, we had double this amount of votes. (I blame this on ShaLeah's vacation.)
Remember to vote throughout the rest of the week. The first day is important. The rest of the week is more important! Consistency in voting is important!

Yeah, number 3 and number 2 on each site respectively is unacceptable. Vote!
C'mon guys, hit those votes! Achaea is only leading by a few - we can take back our #2 spot if we push now. Don't let them get too far ahead!
don't let that nice weather distract you!

What's this 'Nice Weather" You speak of? I only know a harsh sandstorm is blowing in from the south, and the black moon is high in the sky, so I'm voting!
Edit: Nyr should take away the black moon for a RL week if we get #1 on both. It'de be an awesome sign. LOL.
You guys are silly!
Also...we are 4 votes from number 2!
Only 2 more votes to take number 2 on TMS.
Also weird. On TMC it says we are rank 2 on our page ... but rank 1 on the ranking page ... ???
You guyyyyyyzzzzzzzzzz

Praise Tek! I used to play Dragonrealms and they were beating us in the rankings for about a day. I was really upset about it.
Keep pushing, we're back down to #3!
we are at #4! Vote moar!
Also, if you are new and you are liking what you have found, vote!
Vote. VOTED.
Someone explain to me why the gap between #2 and #3 on TMS is so tiny? Step it up!
DragonRealms is RIGHT behind us on top mud sites...there's a five vote gap between us and them.
Dear god.. We cannot be beat my Dragonrealms. It's the worst game (not just MUD.. but game) I've ever played in my entire life.
Now you guys are just making me want to try out Dragonrealms :-\

It costs 15 bucks a month to play (BUT.. you can pay MOAR for bonuses and BS). They wouldn't know RP if it hit them in the ass. It's PG. It's the grind of all grinds. All people do their is script and afk script until they get caught. It's literally the worst game I've ever played in my life.

Be sure to vote! As malken says, they are closing in!
We're five days into the month and only leading third by 4 votes. That means we're leading by less than 1 vote/day. That means if you take even one daily voter out of the equation, we wouldn't have our spot. The upshot? Vote, and vote regularly! Unlike politics, this is one competition where your vote actually makes a difference!
Hey guys, we've lost our second place spot! Get a move on!

It's definitely a close start, let's make sure we pull ahead and maintain that lead this time.

Even then, it probably still qualifies as cheating. The rules say "How often can I vote? ...Your vote will count only once every 12 hours." This implies to me that it's one vote per person, not one vote per IP address that person has access to.
It goes on to imply that inflating your vote is cheating, and that warnings and bans get assessed to Armageddon, not the voter.
Oh yeah, sorry everyone, I did not meant to make it sound like I was approving of such, it was just in answer to a post that Boog made about how we should vote from every devices we own. I was just saying that it was a bit futile to do so, and that remembering to vote every 12 hours ONCE is a lot more effective.
Well there are two people in my house who play Armageddon and could conceivably vote, but since we have the same IP address, we can really only vote once. That's why I was asking.
Maybe they should say "your household's vote will count once every 12 hours."

Well, Malken is guessing about the IP address issue. TMS only states that there is "a script that stops someone from inflating their votes." They could have a cap of 2 or 3 votes per 12 hours per IP. But obviously putting that in the rules would just make it easy to game the system.
Maybe they combine cookie tracking with IP tracking. Maybe it's only cookie tracking. It's likely just IP tracking, but who really knows. Best bet is to just follow the spirit of the rules and each of you vote from wherever you are once per 12 hours. Worst case is one of you wastes 4 seconds of effort daily.
On TMC Aardwolf is on a mission and moving up fast. We should not neglect to vote there every day.
Ok, I voted, can I play now? If so, I might vote again. ;)

12) Miscellaneous. General trouble making.

Yes, you can't get this kind of quality anywhere else.
Only here on Armageddon are people mortified by the prospect of a half-elf being conceived by anything BUT rape.
This is what we're voting to preserve. It's our way of life.
Don't forget to vote today!
Hey, the TMC website has an Armageddon logo now - finally! By the way, vote.
Yep, after more than a year of trying I finally got it to work!
I saw that. I was like: FINALLY!
:)
I am happy to see it as well. Glad they finally fixed their uploader. Maybe you have to be #1 to make it work.
To nitpick, but if its background matched the color of the website background, that would be splendid.

Wow....
I'll have to admit I doubted that this was the case so I dug a little.
topmudsites.com is registered in a way that hides all names associated with the registration: No hints there.
Aardwolf is registered to:
Domain Name:AARDWOLF.ORG
Registrant Name:Derek Prueitt
topmudsites' IP address is:
68.233.245.223
This IP range is a direct allocation of IP block to TMS:
network:IP-Network-Block:68.233.245.223
network:Org-Name:Prueitt, Derek
So, yeah. That's kinda a clear indication that this is actually a might be a possibility but by all means draw your own conclusions ;)
Edited to add: Oh and vote anyway, this just means that #2 might actually be #1 for all practical purposes!
Well, Armageddon is kinda, sorta kicking their asses on the other site, meanwhile they have a thousand more votes than anyone else on topmudsites, so yeah...
I mean, I said approve my character and I might vote again, so I'm voting, I just think it's fucked they think that's acceptable behavior. Must be run by a bunch of filthy neckers.
For the longest time, our MUD community held a bit of apathy toward creating TMC accounts, which are required for voting. Most likely, Aardwolf's giant player base is willing to vote on TMS but is relatively unwilling to create accounts just to vote on TMC. I think we should take what we can get.
I still have my account from years of voting for the games I have been playing. I admit, kinda messed up they want you to have an account, but, whatever. Pisses me off every time I forget my password. Anyway, I'm going to keep voting, see how many thousands of votes they have to puff their score up with to stay on top on their own site, amusing. Probably don't want to get the kind of people you get at number one anyway.
I like that they require an account. Another step between the voting world and cheating.

I was pretty sure this was exactly the explanation for their spot on TMS. So many players that they can afford to do the minimum (for them) to be #1.
To clarify, their numbers in February were about 1200ish for the month.
That made it more clear to me that they simply make sure they win. No reason to have a bigger buffer than you need, right?

Yeah, I think we have a totally different target audience. I really wouldn't want their caliber of player flooding Arm...Just the few open minded ones that wanted a real change. I like that it's second, it's just kind of there going...go on...you know you
want to try it...all those people can't be wrong...maybe
rpi is good...
Looks like they decided a 400-ish vote lead is what they need to stay on the top of the charts. Heh.
Can someone explain what the in/out numbers mean?

1400 vote lead.
In are clicks to view our info I think, out are people that clicked to go to our site.
In is actually the number of votes that the MUD has received.

I don't believe it is an automatic data feed at the moment. I am working on a way to automate that type of information though (to sites that support it) so this is very much in the works!
I was reading through the TMS forums and came across this http://www.mudstats.com/ (http://www.mudstats.com/). It doesn't look very accurate. Should we bother with this?
It should be fairly accurate information provided the right coded support is in place for games to have these stats reported.
Nathvaan or Morgenes or Tiernan can speak to that (I think the support for it was originally set up by Nathvaan).

I dunno, for sure we've had way more than 66 people on. Seems a wee bit off.
We had that support in place but it was pulled out of suspicion that it was causing the recent lag problems. I am not sure if it has been reinstated. It is entirely possible that that was the max reported prior to pulling the code.
TMC's link isn't working.

It has not been reinstated quite yet so the mud stats number will be as hit or miss as they always have been. I never received a good answer about how they get their numbers currently but they are going to be a snapshot with very limited polling intervals I suspect.
When this code is in place they will get statistics about the game on an hourly basis including current number of users logged in.
This is the code that was also causing some issues with clients needing to 'press c twice'. I am still looking at this code and it is a priority to get it resolved and reimplemented!
TMC link nor working is on their side!
Looks like someone forgot to pay their hosting bill....
Is there a third sight that's good, and well respected/known?
A couple more days left! I will post stats for the month tomorrow sometime and we can get ready for the June drive. Great job so far, everyone!
I'm here because I saw you guys were so highly ranked on tms.
How are you guys getting so many votes though, your playerbase is relatively small >_>
Dedicated voting, once/twice a day. It really does add up over time if we're consistent about it. The problem is that most people tend to forget, or start slacking off mid-month, and then the numbers drop off and we slip in the ranking.

??? I'm just hazarding a guess here ???
- but - considering all the different play day / time slots of the playerbase :-\ the actual number of unique account logins for the month is most probably higher than we think and would surprise the both of us! ???
You can see our unique logins each week here: http://www.armageddon.org/updates/
This week so far: 250 (week is not over yet)
Last full week: 292
Because our players love the game and know how important it is to vote. We used be be anywhere from rank #7 to #20 before we started really driving it. The other games vote-counts are more a reflection of their core, dedicated player-base than their number of players over all.
