Title: The Black Moon?
Post by: Fujikoma on April 25, 2013, 10:05:55 PM
Ok, so, it's been nagging at me. I know it's a silly question, in a world infested with dirty magickers and dragons, and it might even be a question where the answer is "Find out IC.", but... Not really a question one could go around asking in Zalanthas. What are the possible scientific explanations for the black moon's sudden appearance, and it staying a week in the sky, causing rain and such? Is there even one? That I have to ask such a question should pretty much confirm my ignorance when it comes to a number of subjects, but I've been wondering and drawing a blank.

.. I'm pretty sure some people around here would know, but I'm even more sure that they can't say anything either. 'Find out IC' is the norm here, but even that's going to be pretty impossible, so.. Good luck  :-\

I'm pretty sure it would be near impossible to get a correct answer IC, if one even exists, and even then, I get the feeling asking such questions is dangerous IC... I'm starting with the assumption that some quality of the world of Zalanthas allows magick to exist, but that the universe is consistent with our own and therefor behaves by predictable, and sometimes strange laws... But perhaps my assumption is incorrect... Maybe the existence of magick is explainable by some larger nearby influence... Not that there's any real life scientific justification for that, just a thought.

NOTE: While I find it interesting to read about scientific stuff, I dunno a lot about it. I know this, so if the question sounds silly, I apologize.

There's many theories going around about what caused it to happen.

One is that it is the much-feared Vestric Orbital Bombardment Complex. The problems caused were a result of bombardment from said evil, feathered aliens. (this one, of course, is a joke and not to be used IC  :P)

The real reason for its sudden appearance and weird effects on the Known are unknown by most. Most common folk would probably put the blame on magickers, defilers, or other such abominable things.

That blackmoon raider dwarf finally accomplished his focus to construct a giant space station.

Since I'm pretty sure the Blackmoon was heavily player-influenced, I'd have to say find out IC - as unlikely as it seems - you could always make a character interested in the moons, etc.

I'm fairly sure during the HRPT that introduced the Black Moon that this line was the most uttered.. well except for maybe "GAAAAHHH! I'm Dead!"

As you've said though a lot of other weird and crazy stuff was happening at the same time so the answer to your questions are probably complicated, complex and completely IC. I don't think any science (real world or Zalanthas science) was involved at all but that's just me. Maybe once every several thousand years it's perfectly natural for a new moon to be caught in Zalanthas's orbit.

IT IS THE GREAT UNANSWERED QUESTION OF OUR TIMES.

I think most people would say 'it just happened,' count themselves lucky the sun came back out at all, and get on with the more pressing concern of putting food on the table.

In the south, it was an official propaganda line that Tektolnes put it there as a monument to him saving the world from darkness summoned by the evil northerners to destroy the south.

You're probably never gonna be able to feasibly get an answer without being some guy neck deep in magicky secret plots, unfortunately.

Its the meeting place of the Highlord and the Sun king and when they "came" together, the skies weeped with joy. The ground shuddered with a quiver of passion, and a collective breath was released over the coupling. Many got stoned in the celebration, some folks has to be fired though, for they envy they bore. And of coarse in the madness of the moments passion, the halflings got carried away, as they tend to do at an all you can eat bruncheun.

But why a black moon, why the darkness, well The Sun king was 'originally' a commoner after all and the Highlord could not be seen topping him. After to commemorate their time together they opted to leave the lights ought in only a small space high above so that when they glance to the sky from their perspective palaces, then can easily share the marker of remembrance any  time, and smirk knowingly to themselves.

Or so I oocly say.

Actually, with the world being so full of doom and gloom, war, and the ever-pressing fear of magickers come to eat your brains, I'm legitimately baffled that I don't see the black moon taking up a more dominating presence in the mind of commoners.

I mean, it's a new moon.  In the sky.  That you can see.  It's STARING AT YOU.  Like a giant black hole in the sky.  Wait, what if it IS a giant hole in the sky.  What if it's the gate that the Dragon is going to return through!?

Many vNPCs and PCs should be alive from the time of the RPT who can remember the rain.  In a world full of people who have never ever, not even once, seen such a thing before -- where rain is, at best, a fairy tale -- this had to be some pretty scary things.  This like, demon-volcanos-erupting-out-of-your-wife's face scary.  But now that the RPT is over, it's business as usual.  Where are the illegal blackmoon worshippers?  What do tribals think of all this bullsnatch?  The doomsayers predicting a new and magnificent force come to cleanse the desert?  Crafty salesmen selling you bits of obsidian and swearing to the High King that they're pieces of the moon?

The High Lord and Sunking are awesome dudes, but even they and their thousands of minions surely can't shut up EVERYONE. <.<

Nilazi backed black moon death cult. Those who surrender are indoctrinated and/or used for ritual purposes. Those who refuse or die will serve in other ways.

OMG Yes!

Blackmoon should be the new Elves of Mallock, Shadow Clan, Doombringers and Twin Warlocks! Reclaiming their identity after years of inactivity. Any staff interest in populating the known with some of the old raider NPCs?

In a super sekrit place:

The light of madness burning in his eyes, the black moon-branded man says, in Sirihish:
"You cannot make us disappear, Faithful Lord! Our name hangs high in the sky for all to see!"

The black moon-branded man says in Sirihish, seething in ecstasy:
"Our Moon is BLACKER than yours!!!"

As the austere, blond-haired Jihaen templar looks on in astonishment, the black-moon branded man drops a sick beat, rattling his
bone shackles as accompanying percussion.

Jumping up from the torturer's rack and busting some dope moves, the black-moon branded woman recites, in sirihish:
"Our moon brings all the cultists to the yard
And they're like, it's blacker than yours
Damn right, it's blacker than yours
We'll indoctrinate you but we have to charge"
