Many of us, from time to time, play characters of a warrior bent: the Byn, the Houses, and the city military organizations.
There is often a lot of good role playing to be had in these situations, and much good advice is given in game. However, there are some things that you, the player, can do that will increase your chance of both enjoying the experience and making it through as a "big damn hero."
Here is a list of some things I have learned that can help to set up your client for the battle, if you have time:
- Set your client to color-flag your leaders so that they stand out in battle
The bold, beautiful templar is standing here.
- Color-flag both "you" and "your" so that you know when things are directed at you.
The granite-thewed dwarf hits you on your head for horrendous damage.
- Set your prompt so that it has your position in it. The positions include standing, sitting, resting, and fighting. Then color-flag them so that you will know when someone is trying to kill you, and also when someone knocks you to the ground. My prompt looks like:
100/100 78/120 160/165 | armed | riding: none |
fighting: the tall, muscular man | walking | early morning | easily manageable
- If you have some idea who the bad guys are, set color-flags so that they show up.
The hunchy-bunchy gith hits you in your groin.
- Set your client so that entire lines that begin with "The " (with the space) are color-flagged something subtly different from the other lines.
A brick or heroin is lying here.
The tall, muscular man is standing here.
These color flags are not perfect, but they will help you with screen-scroll, allowing you to pick out the orders of officers and the things that your character would be likely to notice.
Best of luck!
Please feel free to make suggestions and add your own creations to the list.
P.S. These are all color-flags, and do not actually make your character do anything.
How do I change them on Cmud?
Mudding for way more years than I want to admit.. I've never figured out how to use a client.. I haven't really tried either..
Yeah I've got my JMC client rigged pretty good. Makes playing a lot easier.
Unmentioned by OP: Brief Combat, so your screen scroll isn't wasted on missing attacks.
Though it can be a bit confusing if you're dodging every attack because it makes it look like they aren't attacking you, so I don't leave it on all the time. Just for group outings.

I do not use Cmud. The search function on the GDB, however, is your friend.

My first PC who died beside Morrolan's halfbreed because she didn't realize she had been knocked down and had to stand before fleeing approves of this thread. :D
How to set color triggers is a different matter, though. I used to know and totally forgot.

And my halfbreed in that battle died for the same reason. [Redacted] can [redact] you. Who knew?
For cmud you want to use %color or #cw I believe. It's been a while since I used it.
For mudlet you want to make substring triggers with setFgColor and setBgColor.
.. There's people who don't die in every battle? D:
Best combat advice : be on the winning side.
The latest version of CMud is menu driven. i.e. you don't have to use the #high or #color or #cw commands.
Just create a new trigger from the drop-down menu, in the field where is asks for the match-string, just copy/paste the word(s) you wish to highlight, then click on the appropriate action you need (in this case click on Highlight) - you will be taken to a few choices (highlight text or highlight background etc) - here choose highlight text and then pick the color you want. Thats it.
The advantage in the new version of CMud is, its all menu driven and there's really no need to know how to make triggers or aliases - and it allows you to create custom colors instead of the standard choices only.
