Title: Ask Calavera
Post by: Calavera on October 30, 2012, 01:48:15 AM
Hello! I'm here to entertain you all during the downtime, because my normal evening window of Request Tooling and spying on everybody has been rudely interrupted by weather all the way on the other side of the planet.

So... ask me anything. I reserve the right not to answer certain questions because Adhira will fire me if I break any rules. There's also a whole hell of a lot of things about this game that I just plain don't know.

Here's a little background information, for anyone who's interested:

I was originally hired as a builder for Armageddon 2 exactly three years ago. I can't profess to be the most active builder there was by far, but I must have done something right because I was invited onto the Real Game's staffing team in September of 2011. Since then I've staffed for the area of the game that includes independent/unclanned characters, the 'Rinth, the T'Zai Byn, and the various elven and human tribals.

Since I'm only a Storyteller and have about as much coding experience as that kid you went to high school with who wanted to go to university for "video games," you will probably find you'll get better answers if you don't ask code questions.

(For the record, I am not the first staffer to do this - drop a GDB archive search for 'Ask Rahnevyn' if you'd like to pore over some interesting stuff during a prior era of the game.)

Ask away!

Which tribe, which is non-playable, do you think has the best docs?

Which tribe, which is playable, do you think would be the funniest rulers of Luirs?

'Best' when it comes to documentation is such an ambiguous term. There are some tribes and races from both games that I feel have FREAKING COOL documentation, but when I think 'best' I take into account things like playability, potential plot intrigue, player isolation, and a bunch of stuff that probably detracts from just thinking stuff is awesome.

Thematically, I've always been fond of Ptar Ken and the Dune Stalkers as far as closed tribes are concerned.

Put the Jaxa Pah in charge so they can wage horrible elf war against the neighbouring tribes in the Tablelands.

Do you agree that all areas/people inside Armageddon should aspire to be as gritty and bad ass as the Red Fangs?

When will the RF open again?

Can I have my old character back?

If told you had to sex a member of Arm's non-human races or die, which race (or death) would you choose?

Only when the Producers approve my plot to have the half-elven descendants of the Red Fangs take over Kadius from the inside and topple the silk monopoly. And then you'll just want to be as gritty and badass as a Kadian.

We used to play "would you rather" at my work a lot, and this is honestly one of the less disturbing ones someone has ever asked me.

I'd still probably choose death before dishonour. You know what they say about things like that. You can build bridges all your life and never get called Calavera the Bridge-Builder, but if you sex one elf...

Think really, really hard about the colour of the moons in Armageddon, bro. I'd point you to a helpful but THEY'RE ALL DOWN. :(

So, um. The cooler Blues are in Allanak. By default.

Red Fang is the correct answer

I've always been partial to the 'Rinth. And a certain noble house in Tuluk that's currently closed. And a couple d-elf tribes that are currently closed. And one d-elf tribe that's currently open...

It is impossible to pick a favourite clan for me, because I've had hugely fun experiences in so many of them as a player and a staffer. Clans are one of those things that really are what you make them. We could write up the most awful clan concept in the world and as long as it had the right people playing in it, there would be fun. That's one of the reasons why our playerbase is so awesome.

QuoteRecommended music for playing a tuluki?

It's been about four years since I played a Tuluki as a player. When I animate for the Akai Sjir sometimes I listen to these weird Iranian and Turkish bands my friends from that part of the world have shown me over the years.

Unfortunately this is something I am rather far removed from, not being an American and all. I imagine our stateside staffers have more direct input on the matter than I would. We are keeping track of it on the staff boards, but there is no ETA at this time due to the fact that we simply don't know how long the physical issues of the hurricane are going to be affecting the area our VPS provider is located.

I know it's not on topic here, but I asked you a question in a clan forum, yo.

Another good question:

Is there any chance that a modified version of your Kadian red-fang breeds thing could marry with the idea of the Adevari from Arm 2 and result in a badass tribe of scarred up unhuman unelves who are mixed part breed and into all of the scarification while being badass? Because that is the main thing I was looking forward to about Arm2. Scarification breed tribe. Could you get more awesome?

Another question:

Who was it who did the pic in your avatar again? You posted the link ages ago and she had awesome art. I want to look at it again but forgot who it is.

I don't personally venerate Santa Muerte, but I grew up steeped in an interesting mix of cultures that included a lot of Mexican and Navajo folklore which stuck with me later in life. I spent a lot of time in places where it was not uncommon to see calacas as decoration, depictions of the Holy-Death with offerings such as candles, alcohol, etc.

I always found it an intriguing and baffling cultural nuance that most practitioners of Santa Muerte I'm personally aware of treat it more or less just like Catholicism.

1.  Of changes/ new things implemented /policy decisions made in the past year (in Armageddon that is, not globally or in whatever political entity you think of as home), which is your favourite and why?

This is a tough one, because I feel like in the year I've been on staff we have moved tremendously forward in a lot of ways. I would be lying if I said it wasn't the announcement of the end of Armageddon Reborn as more than a codebase project, though. Even though I worked on it for quite a while and put a lot of time and effort into the new game, I always felt that the world we had and the stories and history we've built were too much to let go of.

I was excited for the new game, but very attached to the old one.

Opening up warehouses for the players was another one that I loved, and the recent implementation of Quit OOC is something I wanted since I very first started playing.

Extended subguilds are a big one, as well. I guess I just have to say I'm a big fan of all of it.

There's also little things that the Triumverate of Amazing (Tiernan, Morgenes, and Nessalin) have worked on staffside that make my job so much easier. We've got new tools, new database-sifting devices, new scripts, new staff commands... we are incredibly lucky to have such a talented coding crew who know our game inside and out.

Quote
2.   If you could change just one thing in the game, quite independent of whether you actually had the power to do it, what would it be?

In a perfect world, where OOC time constraints weren't such an issue and it wouldn't affect playability? I'd stretch the distances between settlements by dozens of rooms. I'd put badlands, rocky fields, ash-blasted wastelands, towering mesas, twisting canyons, scrubby thorn-forests, and all sorts of hazardous terrain in between everywhere civilised. There would be roads that would be the best way to travel, but even then, they'd be shitty, Zalanthas-quality roads. I'd love to play this game in a fashion where traeveling from Allanak to Tuluk meant having to stop and camp overnight at least once, sleeping in shifts because of the dangers that lie in wait just outside the campfire's reach...

... Not taking pipe dreams into account? I'd love to make literacy more acceptable to the masses and make unarmed combat a skill.

Quote3.   Who is your second most favourite player?

Aww, I can't play second-favourites. :( I love pretty much every single thing roughneck and BadSkeelz post. How's that?

This is an interesting question! But honestly, I probably wouldn't. I am not really a game design type. Arm is a labour of love but aside from it, I haven't ever really had the burning desire to design and develop anything gaming related. If I was just some rich kid with a lot of dreams and infinite talent to hire, I'd love to see a horror-type MMO where the players play as the zombies/demons/whatever and have to run around terrorising and eating piles of horrified humans in order to stay alive. But it would probably suck.

Frustrated is kind of a weird word choice. I don't think things that players choose to do often frustrate me. Things that frustrate me when dealing with players tend to boil down to the same things that probably frustrate players about staff: poor communication or a lack thereof. I'm pretty easygoing. The only thing about the game that really frustrates me is when I just plain have no idea what's going on with a given situation. I try to avoid that, though, and staffing as a whole is vastly more enjoyable than it is frustrating.

Is there a specific part of being on staff, or thing that you get to do as a staff member that you enjoy doing the most?

I love scaring the shit out of people and/or making them uncomfortable with really awkward NPCs. Messing with people in the wilderness is up there. There are certain NPCs that fit like well-worn gloves that it's fun to pop into after 'playing' them so long because they have a history with the PCs in question.

I also LOVE designing and building tattooists.

Hanging out and shooting the shit with other staff is also pretty cool, because they are all pretty cool.

QuoteIs there any surprising or interesting things that you learned when you came on staff?  Something not too secret that you can share on the GDB?

This is a tough question because I'm not really sure if you meant IC or OOC! So I guess I'll just blab a little bit about both.

The most surprising thing for me to learn IC wise had nothing to do with documentation or wikis or awesome secrets or anything like that. What surprised me the most is just how much roleplay goes on in this game. Those people in the tavern that you think are idle? They are probably psi-ing, thinking, and feeling their asses off. The sheer amount of character interaction and RP and the nuances thereof just shocked me when I came upstairs, and I mean that in the best way. I've always had a high opinion of our players, but until you experience watching the entire world via your magic staff commands, it's difficult if not impossible to comprehend just how alive our world is.

OOCly the thing that surprised me the most was how easy it was to pick up. I figured there'd be a massive learning curve and I'd fuck up left and right, but it wasn't so bad. I mean, yeah, I did fuck up, but usually not anything major and I could almost always fix it. :X

Does your staff avatar have a description, and if so can you post it here?

I never wrote a description because I thought it would be funnier to not have one. But my EQ list is pretty dope.

What is the one piece of advise you'd give players who find it really hard to play totally evil characters?

Remember that no people are truly evil. There have been some great discussions about this on the GDB in the past, but I'll reiterate what I think are the best bits. Okay, so you're getting more than "one piece of advice" but that first sentence is my go-to.

So you want to play a murderer. Why does he kill? Is it because he's mentally unbalanced and feels a compulsion to harm others? Then he isn't evil, he's just mentally ill and he feels that satisfying his own desires to harm others is more important than them being able to live their lives. So when you get right down to it, he's not evil, just self-centered.

So you want to play a genocidal maniac. Why does he want to purge all elves from the face of the world? Is it because he loathes them and feels the world would be a better place without them, since all they do is steal and they're a threat to humanity? Then your maniac isn't evil. She's just narcissistic and may actually think she's doing the world a favour.

Remember that no villain would ever refer to themselves as such. Villains are always the heroes of their own story.

Totally depends on the day and my RL workload. An average evening usually involves settling down into my favourite comfy computer spot, whipping open the request tool and diddling around on that for a while. Sometimes I'll log into the game at the same time (for staffing OR playing) but I believe I have a bit of the ol' adult ADD going on because it's quite difficult to do both at the same time for me. I usually only mess about with requests for an hour or so at a time so that I don't feel tempted to rush through them or give incomplete responses. Nobody likes that!

I still play the game, too, although the amount of time I put on my character varies quite a bit. When working on a big project or working around time constraints RL, I always put staffing first.

If I had to break it down into numbers, I'd say the game gets about three or four hours a night on nights that I play/staff, but there are some nights where it gets nothin' 'cause I'm pretty busy.

I can be yours forever, but you have to win the auction.

I like a big heaping pile of traditional white person breakfast food, i.e. eggs, bacon, sausage, hash browns, toast, roast tomatoes, mushrooms. There's a restaurant near where I live that will put all that on a pizza for you. Plus hollandaise sauce.

Crepes are nice, too. Oh, and biscuits and gravy. And come to think of it, I eat a lot of porridge.

Breakfast food is my favourite food. You found my weakness.

Both have their places and I enjoy both immensely. I normally don't ever have more than one cup of coffee a day, but I could explore tea endlessly. And a good cup of coffee is an art form.

What is the best way to earn karma?

Play your character like a real person and keep staff appraised of your plots by reporting, using the think command, and wishing up. Adhere to racial and cultural documentation or at least acknowledge that people may ostracise your character if you do not.

Play the game. Get involved. You don't have to be a leader, but I love it when players involve others.

Honestly, though, communication is probably the most important thing. I can only monitor the game in my rather off-peak time zone, so there are whole characters I hardly ever get to see, even though I love some of them. So reporting helps a lot there. It's hard to give karma to players I almost never interact with. Of course, as a team we keep more or less every time zone covered to a reasonable extent, but this is Ask Calavera, not Ask Everybody, so you get me-specific stuff.  :P

"Play the game" is really a big thing as well. Sometimes, when people file a request asking for a karma review, I look at their account and I see a handful of characters with only a few hours played, then maybe a gap when they weren't playing, and then a few more short-lived characters. It's very difficult to assess someone's karma when I haven't even had a chance to really observe them!

Fortunately when assessing karma, staff do talk to one another and it is a group effort. You'd be surprised how much discussion there is, I think.

I prefer not to watch because I get tempted to correct people's grammar and spelling.

Quote
What is the longest mudsex session you've ever witnessed (or heard about)?

Some people do it for hours, but I'd rather not pick on the mudsexers. Some people will stand in the same room and forage for rocks for 8-9 hours, emoting and RPing the whole way. I don't get it myself, but that's no reason to single anyone out!

Quote
Do you prefer to watch people solo rp or rp in a group?

This is very situational. Some players are just a joy to watch in solo play. Some of the most amazing scenes I've ever seen in this game only had one person involved. Group RP can be a lot of fun as well, especially if the players involved are clever dialogue writers! Or if it's tense! The only thing that really gives me a headache to watch is huge social RPTs with 20+ people. Because I can see your emotes, your thinks, your psi's, and if I want to even more detailed stuff. The spam is exhausting. I have colour coding set up to help me handle it.

Quote
What would you say is the biggest difference in people's playing style? Do you have a certain style that you prefer?

This is kind of a tricky question because honestly, no two people play the game exactly alike. There are definitely patterns I notice in some folks' RP, i.e. some people sure do play a lot of elves or Red Stormers or manwhores or whatever. But I certainly don't prefer one over the other, and as long as your characters are all different and nuanced, it's not like we're up there going, "Gah, tiptoe is playing another mul."

My playstyle as a player could best be described as isolating and masochistic.

Halloween is not really celebrated where I live. I dressed up as a professional twentysomething member of the workforce.

I was dreaming that I was an amur tiger in the wilderness.  I was feeling ravenous, predatory and territorial.  There was snow on the ground and I stalked through the trees, focused on prey that while remained unseen, I could feel very near.  I was closing in.
Then I woke up to find myself in the midst of making ferocious love to my partner the first thought that came to me in my dreamy stupor was, 'why is she having sex with a tiger?'

What does it mean? Am I going to die?  It was Halloween night, am I some sort of weretiger?  Am I weird?

I'm a pretty big fan of the written word and could rattle off a whole list here... but to be concise, I'll say that the original Arthur Conan Doyle stories featuring Sherlock Holmes are some of my favourites and Watson as the narrator is by far the best part.

If moustaches weren't allowed, perhaps Hitler would have never risen to power. But then again, many a Hulk Hogan costume for Halloween would be rendered impossible. Whew, with the game back up I got busy working on what I am actually supposed to do as a Storyteller for a while! I will keep this thread open until the end of this week, and then we'll see about locking it down like Commander Shepard says. Until the next downtime, of course, maybe...

If I wished up: Hey I'm open to being kidnapped randomly out of this bar, or murdered in an interesting fashion, and you were around and wanted to, what would you do? Assume my character is a sane indie who's sitting in a city tavern with some friends and some random people and its peak time and nothing super-interesting is happening.

This is something I'd actually defer to my senior staff about. We have pretty strict rules in place about not just randomly messing with people's characters. Why? Because people don't like it when you randomly mess with their characters without their consent. Which is fair enough to me! I definitely felt that way as a player.

As my own personal staff self, I'm always up for a bit of mischief, but the more notice you can give me about wanting to do things, the better. And I can't promise you'll get the results you like...

You have a member of an enemy faction whose interests go against your own. They have provided you with information useful to your cause but are of no further use to you. Letting them go would no doubt end in them informing the enemy faction of your intent and knowledge, while keeping them as prisoner would use up the resources of your rather limited cause. You could kill them, however, they have committed no mortal sin against you other than a differing ideology. What do you do?

Unfortunately someone already beat me to it. Brainwashing.

Hey gurl you wanna come over?

My arms would get really tired flying all that way.

Who did you vote for in the U.S. general election (assuming you are U.S. citizen)?

I am not registered to vote in the U.S., but I was fairly certain all along Obama would get four more years. I don't follow politics especially closely, but the incumbents are usually favoured to win unless they stuff up real bad, right?

What do you do when you need inspiration, dahlink?

I take a walk or take a nice long shower. There's something mysical in soap bubbles. I used to get all my best ideas washing dishes back in the day, or showering. It must be the soap bubbles.

Sometimes I just feel uninspired and fart around on the internet for hours until I convince myself I should be doing something at least slightly more productive with my time. Sometimes this takes a while.

As far as inspiration for Arm goes, that tends to come from just kicking back with a beer and watching you guys play the game. I'll pick up on little threads of players' plots and go to myself, "Ha, I can totally use this for (other thing.)" I read old bio entries for characters from a decade ago that didn't live long, to see about possibly rehashing interesting concepts as NPCs. I trawl people's character reports rather obsessively. Sometimes it amounts to stuff. Sometimes it doesn't.

As far as RL goes, I'm also a bit of a granola eater in that I get a lot of inspiration from nature. Hiking is great for that. You tend to have a lot more faith in any old dumb idea you get when you're standing on top of a mountain.

You call it mystical soap bubbles, I call it Alpha brainwaves.  Creativity is at its highest when sleepy, relaxig, or doing mundane activities.

Have you done yourself up a la Dia de los Muertos makeup before? Because that's how I envision you.

Also, maybe with a bomber jacket on.  Because that just sounds sweet.

They're not jumpers. They just followed their sergeant off the shield wall.

I've got plenty of jumpers for when it gets cold. Assuming you aren't using the word in some weird American way where it isn't the equivalent of a nice, warm piece of knitwear.

I have a leather bomber jacket. How much would you pay me to deliver it?

What about if I was included?

Your version of me sounds a lot cooler than I normally look on a daily basis. I'm not much of a makeup wearer but I've definitely worn a horse mask before. Does that count at all? It wasn't a skull horse, though.

Yeah, 'cause we would totally wear the same size jacket. Aren't you itty bitty? :P

Depends. Are you wearing anything else besides the jacket?

Did this just get inappropriate?

Should I have asked consent?

I'm asking the questions in my own thread...

Well now that we've cleared that up, I'm locking this thread before you call the cops.

Tune in next downtime for Ask Calavera: Incarcerated Edition.
