I think this strikes a nice balance between both sides of the "quit anywhere" argument that formed on the GDB, which were basically "this is a game, we should be able to leave it whenever we want" and "quitting anywhere is open to abuse". It gives players freedom to leave in an emergency and accountability as well. Thanks.

This might well be one of the few game changes that go in to unanimous player love/agreement.

Greatest change recently. There's been a lot of good, big ones ever, so recently, but definitely a great change/addition.

We are looking for persistent abuse.  We specifically didn't put timelines on it.  But we will be looking for things like using it to simulate a ranger and quitting out every other time with it.  Reasons like 'because' aren't going to be regarded kindly.  You don't have to go into details, but please don't abuse it.

It does seem a little light on guidelines for proper usage.

Is it abuse to be like ">quite ooc Munchies!"?  ">quit ooc Past bed time."?  ">quit ooc Bored"?

Like timb asked, what's the expected frequency of usage?  A few times a week?  Once a month?  Almost never?

I like this, as it lends it self to my kind of times (quit ooc there's a surgery going on). I'll probably have to self-limit though, as it might be a temptation to say, "Oh, I've got like 10-15 minutes, why don't I hop in game," when there's a high likelihood of needing to jet off quickly IRL.

I'd be interested to know the answer to timb's question.

I assume the way this has been implemented people are not supposed to be changing their habits in any way due to this addition (eg. going out into the wilderness when they have 30mins playtime with the safe knowledge they can quit anywhere).

I think more guidelines would be helpful. Is it something staff expect people to using sparingly, if at all? I just have a feeling at the moment 'ooc reasons' might get stretched as far as they can go.

Edited to highlight a guideline that I think I see being asked repeatedly here.  'plan accordingly and not rely on it'

I like it because shit happens and I've messed up thinking I'd have time to get into things then three hours later needed to go and had to wish up; Kids break their arms or the neighbors window, dogs run away and bite something or someone.
I figure I'd be likely to use such a thing a couple times a year at most.

Glad I wont have to deal with someone who is butt hurt when called on using it too much,  thinking all the reasons were good, buddy dropped in with beer, had to run to the store really quick, etc.

edit - Didn't see the last post, that clears it up a lot for me.

I think this is awesome. Being flexible to RL needs definitely a plus, and I'd like to think our playerbase is mature enough not to abuse.

Plus will save staff a bit of time, reducing wish ups for these kinds of situation.

A great addition! Three questions come to mind:

1) If we need to urgently log out in a room that won't be 'available' or even exist anymore when we are ready to log back in - for instance, it was a house used for a RPT that has now burned down - what happens to our character?

2) My merchant Silkypants needs to urgently log out during an outing with other PCs, and has no desert survival or combat skills and likely won't survive any attempt to find back to their home town on their own. Would it be possible to send in a request to be transferred to a city location, assuming the rest of the group arrived there?

3) Will we still be too excited to quit OOC after sparring?

1)  Hrmmm...don't go using it in tents or other temporary spaces that might magically exist (or not).  Rooms that are there otherwise, generally aren't deleted, so you will be in a room that might not be linked to the world anymore.  Wish up and explain your situation and we will figure out a place to put you.

2) No, Mr Silkypants will have to deal with the situation IC when they return. 

3) No, but it will still be there when you log back in, stopping you from quitting normally.

As long as it's not abused, I don't see this being a bad thing. It's useful for a lot of players, and there are measures in place to ensure Amos the Warrior Extreme doesn't become Amos the Ranger Extraordinaire.

What happens if it's an "ooc quit" to avoid getting killed?  Will the person be warned or deaded?  Difference between an npc and a player involved, death avoidance?  Seems like an "ooc quit" and a warning, that avoids a well planned assassination, could have tremendous downside for the game.  Hope IC situation is considered as well as any OOC explanation.

It depends on the reason, if you feel this has been abused, submit a complaint, we will investigate and can take appropriate steps.

As for NPCs, again, we are logging these and if you had a combat timer when you logged out.

In the past when rolling rangers, I've leaned in favor a few times just for ooc it's cool to be able to quit out in the wilds if I need to do something. Warrior/Hunter here I come.

As a player that has a job with weeks of being on call. I love this! sometimes things happen and I just have to go in a few seconds and now can if need be and not limit my on call weeks to close quarter playing, even though still will be wary of things those weeks.

I imagine the reason behind it will be what's looked at mostly (and logs of what the PC was doing shortly before in causes of suspected abuse).

I'd suggest rather than worry about what staff think is abuse, worry about what YOU think is abuse. If you think you're abusing it, don't. If you don't think you're abusing it, proceed.

Staff will let you know soon enough if they think you're abusing it ;)

This. While a cool thing,  I think it will be used more and more for non-emergency situations or more than the occasional "oh shit guys, I really have to go."

I just would rather not see hoards of other classes become pseudo-Rangers for the sake of Auto-quitting whenever they feel like it as long as they can find the excuse (if theirs no real emergency, etc)...

I'm sure I'm the rare exception for this point of view but since its a discussion thread...  :P

Regulation and oversight will be the keys to this feature.  QUIT OOC abuse, like other forms of code abuse, will probably actually be pretty easy to track. The best thing that we, as players, can do is to submit abuse complaints when (we think) we see it occur, and then let the system take care of itself.

In recent years, many forms of code abuse have become self-regulating, anyway. Players who want to have their characters behave in IC unrealistically fashions often run up against otherwise invisible code. Feedback from staff is there to help guide us if we want it. The player complaint system does its job to help with regulation.

At least one person has brought up the abuse argument every single time any quit solution has been proposed (probably even including me).  Now we have an implemented quit ooc option.  It stands to reason that the abuse argument will still be there.  We've already said it about half a dozen times here:  we will watch for abuse, you can report it if you see it, etc.

There's a billion ton of stuff in Arm that -can- be abused. But I think Arm deals with potential abuse very well, with the karma system, the staff keeping an eye out and the high calibre of player.

Quitting normally is just as abusable, this only makes it easier to do.  I'm sure quit is abused now but when that happens and staff know about it (the see it, or it gets reported) they deal with the situation.

From the what I've read staff have some kind of system in place to monitor this closely.  I imagine there is some sort of big flag(or you know a message) up in Immortal land that pops up every time someone does this, says something like "Amos just OOC quit out: 'Sorry, my house is burning down bbl.'"  Unless normal quitting is similar, it would seem that staff will be even more aware of those quitting out OOC than normal quitting.

Beyond it going up to all staff when it happens, it is also stored away for future reference, so we can go back and do trend analysis on it, including who is doing it the most, what are the most popular reasons, what time of day does it tend to happen? etc...

For the record, while it seems to be mostly getting positive comments here, it has been used once in the last 24 hours, and from the looks of it, legitimately so.

90% of it for me would be something like. quit ooc Work. quit ooc Work. Quit ooc Work. And I've lost at least 3 characters due to it, one of them one of my very first Red Fangs, before the code that prevented you from going hungry while idle went in.

As for me I love this.  This has been a feature I have been hoping for for a long time.  There have been times where I've had the whole "I want your attention now!" from the girlfriend...  so yeah, there are times I'd use this.

My one-person lasagna dinner ding'ing in the microwave to tell me that it's ready should be a good excuse to ooc-quit as well, then, hmpft.

It is okay for, say this example, of my pc who's never left the city and only made their living within it, and is never wanted for anything that isn't petty, to just quit OOC inside the city whenever they want? Or is this a "Whenever you oocly need it" thing rather than a "If its ooc fair, whenever you want" thing.

Does quit ooc echo to the room? Because I'm sort of limited to one or two potential thingies that might mean I need to leave the computer now and I don't want myself recognizable over several pcs.

Wish I would've had this for one of my old magickers.  I ended up suiciding him in a fit of rage after getting bitched at by my wife for the 100th time for not being able to log out, because I couldn't go into the city with my magick unicorn powers active.

Wish I would've had this for one of my old magickers.  I ended up suiciding him in a fit of rage after getting bitched at by my wife for the 100th time for not being able to log out, because I couldn't go into the city with my magick unicorn powers active.

And now we have quit ooc and can save at the gates. Wow. Times, they are a'changin'.
