Title: Armageddon MUD Advertising, 2012
Post by: Feco on April 27, 2012, 02:38:44 PM
I thought it might be interesting to try and spur a little bit of advertising for the game -- it can never hurt to have more players.  Referring friends and the MUD top10 lists seem to be the biggest source of new players, but I don't see any reason we can't try a few different avenues (I know this has done in the past -- did several GDB searches about it).

1)  I was noticing that on reddit's /r/gaming, the threshold for actually getting to a decent position on their "What's reddit playing?" list is obscenely low.  While getting on the Top 10 (the only displayed on the main page) might be difficult, getting to the #25 position only requires 60 users to quickly register, and message the bot.  While it wouldn't be a massive BOOM to players, you never know what sort of attention even being somewhere that close to the top might get us.  If everyone is willing to quickly sign up and send the quick message, we can try and get some level of return.

I think the name we all should send in should be Armageddon MUD.  Once people google that, they'll go straight to our homepage.

Here is the list. (http://nowplaying.gamedifferences.com/)
Register an account on Reddit, and then click this link in order to let the bot know what game you're playing. (http://www.reddit.com/message/compose/?to=GamingBot&subject=Now+Playing&message=Enter%20game%20names%20here,%20one%20per%20line,%20max%20of%205)

2) Secondly, seeing as Armageddon MUD is a "niche" game nowadays, we could always throw a flier or two up in niche locations, such as gaming stores.  If someone is willing to whip up a flier, I'd be more than willing to ask one of the gaming stores in town if I can tack it up on their board.

I made this right quick, and while it would probably be useless, I've taped a few up on campus.  You never know who we might draw in.

3) If you frequent any other forums (potentially not other MUDs, as they may frown on advertising using their forums), throw a thread up in the relevant section telling people about the game.  I know in the past threads on SomethingAwful and the Bay12 forums have brought a handfull of players -- if we can get one or two from another forum we each visit, that could turn substantial.

So any other ideas?  At the very least, it can't hurt.

And don't forget to fucking vote.  I found this game on TMC, and I have no doubt that lists like that bring us the most players.

Awh c'mon people. I just did the reddit thing in under a minute, even with having to register first.

Hey, we're up to six!

Summer classes start two weeks from now, so I might go ahead and post up a handful of those QR codes, unless someone has a better flier.

Signing up for reddit does not require an email address, so like drunkendwarf said, it literally can take less than a minute.

At Rank 80 with 11 votes!

Let's keep it up! :D

Just a suggestion; but maybe we should have some of these 'vote links' in the actual MUD, in the 'Welcome to Armageddon' screen. Just a single line or something mentioning: "If you like Armageddon MUD - Please remember to vote so we can continue to share this game!"

I know we have a Facebook page but is it, you know, the 'Official' Armageddon Facebook page? If so; why not advertise that as well, on the website's homepage? Just at the bottom, "Like us on Facebook!"

Lol. Man. I just totally suggested selling out ARM, didn't I?

It would be good if there was a way to name and shame frequent GDB'ers who don't vote. It's a really lame excuse that they just forget all the time.

Also there's this on that list:

I'm guessing that's some /v/ trololololling or do redditors really like their creepy hentai games?

I would assume some trololol.  Even if you criticize the community, Arm's application system is gonna filter out at least some of the idiots.  Most with a short attention span won't even make it past trying to sign up.

Rank is currently 50 with 22 (Now 23 that I added it to my account) players listed as playing.

Need more people to do this, we could get and maintain a pretty high rank if more people got involved.

I haven't read over this whole thread..

But out of my good friends here, about 6 work for various ad agencies (Legas D, Young and Rubicam, EuroRSCG, etc).. I've done lots of freelance work for agencies this past 12 months. Maybe I could ask if one of them would do some work for a mini campaign for arm... Working in whatever budget their is. Be it a banner on the mud site or whatever.

If any staff is interested in this I can ask, but just let me know. They would do it pro-bono (aka free of charge)

I'm a graphic designer with digital and print advertising experience (big big agency). I would be happy to put something small together (for free), if someone else figures out the placement and what formats etc.

I had a bunch of mock ups for a short video ad for arm,  Very simple, all the aspects of images are silhouetted against a yellow red-orange to deep red background that changes into a deep red, purple gradation for some night scenes.

The scenes shift and are simple still images with one or two aspects that move and lead to a transition to the next scene. Like a knull or embankment some blades of grass and a tree, the a very tall lanky figure with a bow rises and fires arrows, the arrows soar through the sky black against hte red back ground and the focus follows them leading to the next scene, some riders on inix and or beetles.

The arrows miss.

There was another with tall grass and the shape of a tembo with their wide mouth and tall eye stalks rises up out of it.

Then another scene in a city, which you can tell by the edge of a wall with the corner of a roof and some stairs, a figure with a jar in its arms, profiled so the shape shows it to be so, going up the stairs and across from it out of some shadowy alley the profiled of an assasin, cloaked figure with a knife out stretched and poised to begin a back stab.

There a several others I had drawn up as well.

But I think a you tube promo in this fashion would be really cool, with some mood setting music and scrolling words to inform about the game like a movie intro.
