Title: Bad Ideas
Post by: catchall on December 20, 2011, 05:09:08 PM
In the spirit of the Crawl LearnDB's Bad Ideas (https://sites.google.com/site/cherrypickedbadideas/) archive, I offer the following ideas that should be implemented immediately.

* Doing 'give <item> elf' results in 'Are you sure (y/N)?'

* Sleepwalk skill that allows you to spamwalk and regen simultaneously.

* Bandage considered an aggressive action.

* Along with the above, "nosave bandage", which lets bandaging attempts on your character always succeed (I could go on with the bandage jokes, but I won't.)

* Mudsexxing lowers max stun.

* "nosave language". Your character makes no attempt to understand any verbal communication. Useful for inane tavern chatter and lectures from superiors.

* Steal has city and wilderness variants. So does skinning.

* High level spell that temporarily activates staff commands. (Bet that requires a component!)

* New game Arm 3, to be designed and coded concurrently with Arm 2.

Loving the nosave language because that would be funny as hell.

Hint: Turn all text black, turn background text black. Highlight names white.

When you stop seeing his messages pop up, hit enter a lot.

Turn text to grey. Say "Yep, Sarge, heard every word! Got it!"

Make items left and right handed.

Also, running with tools held has a small chance of causing a critical accident.

... But if items are left and right handed, how would we know which hand to put them in? All we have are "Primary" and "secondary" hands!

THe player/character would know.
I think it' sucky that EVERYONE knows you are using a weapon in your good hand rather than just your left/right hand.
So I actually think that would be a very GOOD change.
Just have to have an option in chargen to mention if your PC is left or right hand dominant.

Nah, you can still pull the "I'm not left-handed" trick if you want to.

Force everyone who apps during the last week of each month to app c-elves to fill in the pc population gap, and prevent people who app dwarves during the first week of each month from being approved for the same reason.

App a character who's sexually attracted to templars. A breed character, with mutations. Who's a little screwed in the head and doesn't know when to shut up.

An automated kudos system that receives, and stores, kudos without sending them to you immediately. After 4-5 RL days of not logging in, it forwards one kudo to you, repeating every 4-5 RL days until you log in again, after which it goes back into idle mode.

Dentist and barber shops for rent, where people can pay the rent and practice their trade for money, as fronts for mobs; basically, interesting places for spotty peaktime rp which are sitting targets when a particular mob gets into hot water.

Teleport items/rooms culturally acceptable and cheap for people to use. The Byn falls halfway apart.

1. Ghostriding the wagon/argosy/siltskimmer/etc.
2. Saying anything happened, "Like it was magic." or using the word 'magic' in casual speech in some environments.
3. Winning a Kruth game against a Templar. Or, really, winning anything versus a Templar.
4. subdue weezer.

Add new major city to the game, it differentiates itself from the other major cities by even further diluting those city's populations.

New tribal clan for dwarves which consists entirely of dwarf fortress references.

Additionally, new wear location: nature's pocket.

Whirans can now use farts as weapons, codedly.

The Mud now has an ending! Three one ending, from three different perspectives and nothing you do throughout play matters.

Implement a pay-for-karma system and raise the karma cap to 15, with sufficiently powerful classes/perks at those karma levels for the players who reach them.

The karma cap for non-paying players is still 7, though.

When you walk anywhere you have to write out 'left foot' 'right foot'.

The quicker you type it in, the faster you walk.

Could also add in a 'tiptoe', 'stomp' and 'jog' command.

Get rid of inventory space, and give everyone only two. Secondary and primary hand.

Let's add in thighs and calves and make Arm a giant text-based version of QWOP (http://"http://www.foddy.net/Athletics.html").

After you spamwalk into a doorguard more than 10 times, you will be unable to use that directional command for 10 minutes.  You will also be forced to deal with it as an IC issue, like this poor man.

Actually the more I think about this the more brilliant it sounds. Your ability to coordinate your limbs will be based on a Gross Motor Skills ability, which will start at Novice. It'll be another way to tell the new PCs apart; they'll not only be passing out constantly from overuse of the Way, but they'll be unable to walk in a straight line for the first 5 days of play.

left thigh left calve left foot north
You attempt to take a step with your left leg, but instead fall over in an ungainly sprawl.

left thigh left calve left foot north
You need to stand up first.

stand
You stand up.

left thigh left calve left foot north
You attempt to take a step with your left leg, but instead kick yourself in the face, doing horrendous damage!

If you want a character who starts with Gross Motor Skills above Novice, you'll have to special app it.

After experiencing a bad scare in-game (frightening damage, surprise stab, bards), all directional commands will be rewired for 10 minutes to "flee self."

Mudsex with characters under the age of 18 by characters over the age of 18 crimcodes the elder character.

Also, High Templar Chris Hansen wants me to have a seat over there.

Just as using multiple keywords increases your chance of a successful psionic contact, crafting is more likely to succeed when you type the whole result, rather than using an abbreviation.

Related.

You no longer get to pick north, west, east or south, you must now pick left, right, back, or forward.

You don't get a compass.

Good luck.

As far as mimes go, isn't there already a bardic circle for that?  If not, I think I've got my next dwarven focus.

Inspired by a series of posts (http://www.zalanthas.org/gdb/index.php/topic,31255.msg678637.html#msg678637) over in the RAT thread, alternate messages for the Flee command:

Panic! You can't escape! (current)

Panic! You soil yourself.

Panic! You run around in circles.

Panic! You gibber helplessly.

You flee to the south, urine trailing behind you.
