Title: Environment Echoes
Post by: Desertman on September 15, 2011, 05:04:06 PM
Is it just me or are some of the environment echoes in the game, especially in the taverns, far too agressive?

I picture environment echoes to be something that gives a general feeling of the atmosphere in the room, not something that should be an outlandish epic event that happens through random ticks that people just learn to ignore.

How many templars do I have to watch take down criminals in the middle of a tavern with everyone just ignoring it before it becomes a little silly?

I think the rule of thumb should be, "If it is something the entire room would react to if a PC were doing it, then it is too abrasive to be a room/environment echo."

If a PC templar walked into a tavern and took down another PC criminal the entire tavern would either go silent and stare in fear/awe, jump in to help either the templar or the criminal (probably the templar 99% of the time) or get up and get the hell out of town.

As it stands, the room echoes do things like this regularly and because its not a PC on PC event, the entire tavern will ignore the event as if it isn't happening and just continue sipping thier drinks without even looking up.

I like the room echoes, I would just like to see some of them toned down a bit to be a little more atmospheric and a little less "look at this cool room echo guys, its awesome."

I like them as they are. I've had nice little scenes with people watching a barfight displayed by an echo while chatting at the bar or whatever. I like most of them to be atmospheric with something to take note of here and there. Pretty much how it is.

I can't recall any Templars taking down criminals in room echoes. In the Gaj there are soldiers who do, but it's the Gaj and filled with elves and brawls and what have you.

I do get a little tired of people catching their hands on fire, though.

I also think that some echoes I liked were taken out--roach races, rats falling on tables, etc.

I don't think it's a big deal either way, but then again, maybe you are playing somewhere else.

Keeping in mind the vast majority are fine, but there are some here and there that make me go, "If that really happened, as in if a PC were doing that right now, the entire room would shit bricks."

If it's that crazy insanely unrealistic and horrible, you should submit a request and ask the imms to take it out (and explain why). If it's that bad, you're probably not the only one who thinks so.

Granted, but I created this thread to find out if I was the only one that thought so. If it turns out I am, I won't even submit a request.

You aren't.  The only reason I haven't submitted a request is because I don't play much anymore.

There is a Templar taking down a criminal echo in the Sanctuary. I find it pretty active for an echo, I mostly agree with Desertman. But i'd rather Staff focus on writing new echoes for arm 2.0 than going back and revamping anything like that in 1.0

This would be fine to submit as an idea in those rooms. I can look over it and if I need more info, I'll email you.

I think they're fine tools to react to. And who knows? Maybe those templars are just escorting ... the vnpc out for um, tea. Or swill. Depending on which city state you're in. ;)

As a point of interest (or not), no one has submitted any ideas on this, so nothing has been done to change any of it.

I'll write some more. What are you (generally) looking for? Taverns or city-wide?

Any place where you actively see or have recently seen (in the past week/two weeks, at least) an automated echo that you feel is "over the top," or could be restructured to be more appropriate to that environment.  Perhaps you think the room echoes fire off too often (that can also be fixed).

I'll definitely do what I noticed (though my memory scope only includes where i'm playing at the moment). Maybe Desertman and other 'concerned parties' can send me their ideas via PM and i'll include it into one request.
