Title: Taste Buds.
Post by: jhunter on April 30, 2011, 03:56:59 PM
I think that all food and drink should give the taste messages automatically when you eat or drink something. Not just when using the taste command, etc. Seems weird that you don't get the information just by eating or drinking normally.

I would be okay with this.

This is true.
Good thinking.

Makes sense. Only problem is that it would be a tiny bit spammy with certain foods, but with those foods, you really shouldn't be chomping them down.

Maybe instead of as it is now, have the taste on normal 'eat'. And then have another non-spammy 'eat all' command where you're just gobbling down the whole meal in one go and don't taste it.

Or eat the whole meal in one go and do taste it, but you eat the whole steak in one line, instead of the usual x amount of lines.

This 'eat it all in one bite' discussion comes up in cycles like everything else. I wonder why it is viewed as such an inconvenience, and why you (those that are complaining about the spam) aren't treating the character's need to eat regularly with the same fanaticism that you practice skills or spells. Why are you spamming a bunch of eat commands together?  Why don't you take the time to make eating meals part of your roleplay of your character?  Why don't you share a meal with someone when you are sitting at the tavern, or taking a break while riding across the desert?  Eating is a major part of a person's social and physiological being, why is this not being carried into your roleplay?

I may have read this wrong, but my impression was that the request was to automatically taste food while eating, and the eat all would simply not give you the taste message.

What Guiness is trying to say, I think, is that the "eat all" command would be there to, in fact, eat the entire food object, rather than having to "eat fruit;eat fruit;eat fruit;eat fruit;think Fatty.". There should be no problem in, every morning, grabbing a steak worth 2-3 bites, and not really getting the "you feel hungry" message.

I was responding to a derail of the original request, which, to stay on topic, I think is a fine idea if people want to have the taste message when eating as well, I'm good with that.

My point is about the argument that comes up rather regularly asking us to add an 'eat all' that reduces the spam from people doing 'eat fruit;!;!;!;!;!;say so how about that deal we were working on?'.

Technically I should move my topic to another thread, and so I will, sorry for the derail off the derail.

Yes he is! But on topic. lol

Though I agree.  I wish taste would be added to eat and drink commands. So one does have to taste or sip to figure out what something tastes like. Though I'd like to keep those commands.. they have their uses in role play.

Also something else (still a derail if its close to the topic) is a lot of taste echoes are super plain and meh. Wish some would be given spice.

"It tastes like a kalan fruit."
"It tastes like a fruit."
"It tastes like meat."
"It tastes like ordinary kalan wine"

Okay.. Well what the fuck does a kalan fruit or scrab taste like? Since I never ate those in my life time. This is more for my curiosity on what all things on zalanthas taste like... I guess..

Yeah, I'd like taste and sip to stay in addition to my suggestion, they do have their uses.

I personally don't care one way or another if you can see a taste message with eat or not.

However, that being said - there are already codes in game that you can use to get the taste message.  I don't see a point behind changing the already existing code to allow for eat and drink to get the same messages as 'taste' and 'sip' making the latter two practically obsolete.  It's, IMHO, lazy.

And as far as I know, the taste and sip messages are far more than just messages.  And they're way more useful than just using them as RP tools, and if you changed the taste messages to the eat and drink codes, this would do away with certain ways to secretly make food and drink taste like shit. (And also taste quite deadly.)

If however, you folks are absolutely adamant about making another pointless addition to the game (why yes, I am a veteran player who liked this game just the way it was years ago), then the messages given to eat and drink should vary drastically and not be as detailed as the original 'taste' and 'sip'.  A vague message - such as the current taste messages - which would then mean that the taste and sip messages should be overhauled and given more in-depth wording.

Just my opinion.

Nothing pointless about it. It has nothing to do with it being lazy and much more to do with it being realistic. When my pc eats or drinks something, realistically you should get that information instead of having to enter a separate command. Also, you say it would make taste and sip obsolete and then go on to further confirm why it would not. The difference would be...if something was tainted and you just "eat tainted shit" instead of "taste tainted shit" you'd have just put enough in you to suffer the consequences. They both serve their purposes. It's very silly to have to go "taste food" separately from "eat food" in order to have any idea what it tastes like.

Taste and sip would not be made obsolete by a change such as this.

The only thing "taste" and "sip" have to do with this conversation, is they are the only command in the game that returns the echo people are looking for. Otherwise, they still exist as a "I want to take a small bite/sip of this item, be it because it may be poison, or because I am being polite but am in fact quite full."

I am all for adding the taste of things to eat. I think very few people realize the foods they eat every day have very little to no taste, and are indeed quite bland. Cooking is already such a rare skill other than to fry up that meat; if more people could see the actual flavors of their food all the time, maybe they'd be inclined to save up their money for that bahamet meat and ginka sauce, peppered with thodeliv spice flakes.

Just me?

Nope. I like to have my pcs enjoy good food over shitty food instead of robotically eating whatever is around them because the code says my pc must eat.

Heh, I actually go to a bit of an extent to get good food as it is. Cooked food is on my character's luxury list, along with fashionable clothing, bone jewelry and cool weapons. (some characters prioritizing other bits more)

A change like this would still make me miss the taste/sip commands. Taste/sip is a sign that someone is savoring that food. It's a favorite command (along with sniff). I wouldn't want to see it diluted to coded purposes. Then again, it makes more sense to have taste on normal eating.

I'm happy with the code the way it is.
