My google-fu is weak. What's a surmac, anyway?
I always thought it was a hat.

I think it's like a hat with a huge, wide brim.

Thanks guys.
Nah.

Kung Lao's cooler.
Or maybe Stranger.

I always thought it was more like a pith helmet. Because surmacs are usually armor, right?

I always pictured surmacs thusly:

You call that a hat?
I always thought it was a bit like this.

How I've always pictured surmacs:

I've always thought of surmacs as Don Quixote's barber bowl hat for some weird reason. Or some other form of dapper head apparel, usually non-western much like what Durant posted.

Glad we've pinned this one down. What's next?

This.
Maybe a surmac is more like a jingasa, though. It's the military version of the Oriental conical field hat. Though I'm not sure this would qualify as "wide brimmed".

Either way, they are ALL badass. I approve of every single variant of the surmac, especially the bush hat with the croc teeth. AUSSIE AUSSIE AUSSIE!
Yeah, someone seriously needs to mastercraft a raptor toothed surmac.

I agree with 7DV as well. This is how I see it.

Nah, bush hat would be better.
a black, raptor-toothed bush hat
I found this on Brandon's Kronibas' Armageddon photobucket.

That's not a d-elf, it's a twinky ghatti wearing people clothes ;D
I always pictured it as a hat with a wide brim. Some of them even have transparent veils which hang down around the face.
I never really thought of a surmac as being armored.
It's Tenzin's hat. Thread over (because Tenzin wins at everything).

I always thought it was something like this:
minus the mouth piece and plus some sexy chitin plating on the inside makes for 'a stylish, veiled surmac'
That woman on the left is obviously a slut, look at all the skin she's showing!
A pictured it like a sun-hat... because thats how most of them are described.
I dont think I've ever seen an armored one...

They all count as armor, some more obvious in their description than others. That doesn't necessarily mean they're very protective though... I guess a leather hat is better than a cotton hat.
Maybe it's time to string replace Surmac with...:
Kasa - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kasa_(hat)
Salakot - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Salakot
Conical - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Conical_straw_hat
Sedge - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Conical_straw_hat
Those will at least show if you google them. Surmac seems specific to arm.
Except I'm pretty sure none of the surmacs IG have descriptions that look like conical straw hats, or variants thereof.
