Title: Directional Echo (from tmemote)
Post by: Preacher on June 30, 2009, 04:55:09 PM
I found myself in the habit of spam walking everywhere, occasionally pausing to throw out the odd emote between moves.  When the tmemote thread came along, I looked at why I was doing this a little more carefully and found that it was due to the echo received.

When I em hobbles along, dragging his foot, I see :

The something, something wo/man hobbles along, dragging his foot.

However, when I w (hobbling along, dragging his foot), (with or without the brackets) I see :

New room description.

After trying a number of directional emotes, in a number of formats, I gave up when I thought that I was doing it wrong and couldn't figure out how to make the damn thing work.

So, I ask, is it just me?  Or does the directional emote not echo to the person moving?

It doesn't echo to the person moving. :)

AFAIK, the way it works is this:

> e (pre-emote) [post-emote]

In your starting room, people see:
Pre-emote, the tall, muscular man walks east, post-emote.

In your ending room, people see:
Post-emote, the tall, muscular man has arrived form the west, pre-emote.

I didn't think movement accepts post-emotes.

Yes, it does.

A year or two ago, maybe more, I brought this up. Sanvean said then that she didn't see why it wouldn't be in soon, being as it was a good idea.

Say, Morgenes, if you're feeling froggy, bro...

I almost never use directional emotes because it does not echo to me.

I've seen too many other people walking around town with silly ones because it does not and does not take targets. Although, it should take targets as long as the PC has the target in possesion IMO.

Never used it, not once... if it echoed, I would.

It should echo! I mean, I get that when you walk somewhere without emote, and it doesn't echo. But if you walk direction + emote, I don't see why it shouldn't. It makes logs much interesting. There are times when I did some directional emotes that fits with the flow of the RP but I couldn't decide whether to keep it or not because it doesn't echo.

So, if you walk without emote, it doesn't echo, but if you walk with an emote, it should. It'll be something like this:

> e (hobbling along)

>You walk east, hobbling along.
(Insert New Room Desc Here)

Or something. Dunno, just a thought.

I would like to be able to see these emotes if you are following someone, as well. If you do a directional emote it does not echo to people who are following you, as far as I know.

I would like these to show up, especially the "arrival" emote.  Then again, how will this interact with certain stealth skills?

(Things to ponder...)
