My current gripe is with the forage code. You can have a character standing in a forest.. Yet forage your ass off and be unable to find any branches.
This is my current gripe on code.

Not all branches are created equal, either. Some are suitable for crafting something... many are broken, forked, bent, cracked, too thin, etc.

That's how I normally play it off.

Try another part of the forest. Not all areas are the same for finding stuff.

To add: Some areas have an abundance of a certain item, paying attention to the descriptions can help.
Definitely room descriptions can be misleading some. An agafari forest might not be capable of finding branches while the agafari grove will be branch heaven or vice versa. If you aren't finding any branches in a room you feel would be full of trees that shed branches, bug the room, idea the room. I've had a good many rooms altered for that purpose. It's what teh commandz is 4
Remember though that the word FOREST in armageddon isn't the same as the image that comes to mind when someone says forest in real life. It's a lot more barren more often than not. There was a good picture to represent this posted awhile ago but I'm too lazy to look it up.
A couple scrub forests.

Perhaps the word "forest" is misleading then.
Not misleading... relative.
Oh okay GLASS-IS-HALF-FULL guy.
Seriously. It's a forest of scrub bushes and such. ;)
Hard to find a good stick in that...
