Title: Backpack problems
Post by: Salt Merchant on June 04, 2009, 10:38:34 PM
I keep running into capacity problems with my backpack and wonder if anyone could give me a hint as to what is going on.

Current situation:

> value pack
a (pack) would seem to weigh 15 stones
> assess pack
It could probably hold around 48 stones.
> l in pack
a container (1 stone) (empty)
a cloak (1 stone) (empty)
a torch (1 stone)
some food (2 stones)
a waterskin (6 stones)
a weapon (5 stones)
> value shield
a (shield) would seem to weigh 6 stones
> put shield pack
a (shield) will not fit in a (pack)

I've made sure there are no other packs about to intefere.

What is happening, please? This isn't the first time I've had a pack that slowly seems to lose its capacity over time.

Sometimes your guesstimations are just that - guesstimations.

Just because a value return shows <x> does not necessarily mean it's that number. It can vary, unless your value skill is great.

Even if the guestimations are off by a few stones, there should still be plenty of room in the pack.

If you don't have value, expect to be way off.

Get a bigger pack.

My character does have the value skill.

Does it seem reasonable that the items listed above wouldn't fit the good ol' famiiliar bone-studded backpack? Especially when you've seen other packs of the same make holding amazing amounts of crap?

Waterskins are evil, try it without the waterskin in.

You stop using your worn, carru-hide pack.

>value pack
A worn, carru-hide pack would seem to cost about 35 obsidian pieces.
A worn, carru-hide pack would seem to weigh 76 stones.

>assess -v pack
A worn, carru-hide pack can be worn about one's body.
A worn, carru-hide pack can be worn across one's back.
It can be opened and closed.
It could probably hold around 56 stones.

>empty pack ground
You empty your worn, carru-hide pack onto the ground.

>value pack
A worn, carru-hide pack would seem to cost about 35 obsidian pieces.
A worn, carru-hide pack would seem to weigh 76 stones.

What is going on here?

Is there any way to reset (fix) the weight of this pack?

Perhaps instead of posting a singular problem on the gdb, you should bug it, or put in a request.

I've bugged this a few times and been told that my value skill is just way off. That's just simply not true. I've taken stuff out of a bag and later the same stuff won't fit in the bag. I think it has something to do with space code or something that we haven't been told about. Like volume, not just weight, gets taken into account now.

Quote from: MOTDContainers now properly check the maximum size of items that it can hold.
The values have been set, code was looking at the wrong value until now.
(It was a bug that you could fit spears and otherwise large objects in
  pouched belts)

Again, bug it if you think something is working inappropriately, please.

I think the original problem, not being able to fit a shield into a pack, was an unannounced change to the code (or announced but without much fanfare).

The change has since been updated to differentiate (giving a separate response) between when an object is too large and when an object would cause the container to exceed its capacity.

The backpack empty weight problem is separate, and one that I have bugged before. It's been a problem for quite a while. What I was hoping to find here is a suggested workaround (e.g. maybe someone found that leaving it in a save room for fifteen minutes causes it to reset or whatever).

The way the value command is coded it doesn't work well with containers.

On second thought, this is what I meant. I've had the value skill turn up the same weight for an empty bag as the same bag, full of things. Having the value skill. And I've bugged it before and wished up.

If I remember right, bags are sort of like "Bags of holding" in regards to weight.

If a large bag weighs 10 stones empty, it's not going to weigh much more when full. My guess is it cuts a percentage of the weight of what's within it.

I would guess that this is because once you value something, you will get that same value for the item for a certain period of time.  This prevents you from just spamming value and then taking the average.  A side effect might be valuing a bag and then not seeing any difference for a while when you switch around its contents because it's still the same bag.  That's just a guess, though.

I believe the bag does not weight ten stone but can hold ten stone of weight is what that means.

Bags definitely get heavier when you put stuff in them.  There -was- a bug a while back where a bag could permanently get flagged with the weight of the stuff in it, though.  I had a plain old bag once that weighed 60 stone, empty.

Took me quite a while to notice it, with half-giant strength, heh.
