Being able to peer in rooms adjacent to cardinal directions makes sense.
>peer north east
You peer north and to the east
You spot a dusty grass cilops.
We need this. Please?
That would be nice.
Being able to look into diagonally adjacent rooms makes sense There's no realistic reason why Zalanthans can only see anything in the four cardinal directions, so if it is to be made codedly possible to see all surrounding rooms, there shouldn't be a special command for it. It has been suggested in the past, sometimes with more restrictions to looking northeast and so on, but that would be a completely OOC thing to impose on our characters.
If we can look north and east, I want carru, mekillots, braxats, tembo, bahamets, and mantis to be able to look north and east...and respond accordingly.
I'm all for it.
SoI does this with "scan".
It sounds too 'artificial' to me.. It reminds me back in Metal Gear 1 or something when you'd fire a missile north then curve it either left or right to see in other rooms.. Yah, I'm sleepy.
SoI's way feels more 'natural', yah..
Goodnight.

Yes, but 'scan' is already a command and a skill in Arm.
I don't like SoI's scan. It looks everywhere, has a delay, and most of the time I just want to look in one direction. I've scanned my surroundings before with no delay IRL :P
Lol, if we could see in NW, NE, then people will be asking for looks NNW, NNE, NNWW, NNEE... which also makes perfect sense.

Seeing it a lot these days. I miss it when I log into Arm. Though, to be fair, I miss the 'who' command on the other RPI mud I play. :(

good point, but my chief concern is the mekillot to the NW that I can't see, but is going to eat me as soon as I go north. looking NNW will not protect me from such an event anymore than going north and THEN looking NW would.
So looking "around corners" would indeed be useful for survival in the wastes.

TELESCOPES.

You see nothing out of the ordinary.

You see nothing out of the ordinary.

Here is a full room description, complete with plants, exits, and baddies.
The argument that's come up before about this is if you are allowed to look northeast, then you should also be able to travel northeast.
I don't think Arm 1 would be the same when you have eight different directions to worry about in the grasslands.

This. A thousand times, this.

I'm fine with that.
I'll admit it's a two-edged sword.

good point. Then moving into a new outdoor room could still put you adjacent to an enemy you could not see previously. therefore you're basically in the exact same position as you are now. So why bother at all?

Well...perhaps because with the new ability, we could see -three- rooms in a room adjacent to the standard cardinal directions?
We could potentially spot baddies three squares north and three squares east, a distance that they won't attack from.

Exactly. Anything that gives PCs an perceptual ability that a mob doesn't have is silly. If you can see it, it can see you. And if it's aggro, it should come running for your ass.
Hell, I think mobs should run at you from three rooms away, if they can see you. Maybe I'm being a bit too harsh.

Yea maybe a bit. But I agree to a certain extent. Raptors should do that imo. Other aggro mobs I personally view as aggro based not so much as being predators or hungry badasses, but territorial creatures trying to keep the rest of their virtual family safe.
And, this has been discussed before, on a kinda smaller scale, back when I was still a GDB newb: http://www.zalanthas.org/gdb/index.php/topic,27461.0.html

A million times, this.
I think you (and mobs) should be able to see NW, NE, SW & SE but not be able to walk in them. This would resolve the problem of stumbling upon enemies you should have been able to see, but could not.
I think it's fair enough that aggro mobs should attack you if they see you, but there is a huge difference between humanoids with higher intelligence and animals. An animal probably wouldn't be constantly checking every direction constantly for something to charge at, and a humanoid travelling through dangerous territory should - it makes sense that the humanoid would see the animal before the animal would see the person.
It does not make sense for a Raptor to attack instantly upon seeing a player 3 leagues away. It would make sense for a Raptor, that hasn't eaten in a couple of days, to spot a player, pause to consider it's hunting tactics for a couple of moments while it watches the person...then charge.
