Title: The Way and Crafting
Post by: musashi on January 23, 2009, 11:42:13 PM
I propose that sending someone a message via the way should not disrupt your crafting.

It seems odd to me that you can have a barrier up, start crafting, and be fine ... and you can contact someone, start crafting, and be fine. All the while you're still "suffering from use of the Way" but you're not breaking concentration at your craft.

But psi'ing someone breaks your concentration. Doesn't seem like it should.

So, I propose that psi'ing be set to not disrupt your crafting.

Or ... that barrier and current psionic contact be disabled when you start, so that at least everything is behaving the same way; though I admit I'd prefer the former, as it would seem to aid RP more.

Agreed.

As long as crafting takes stun, I'd be fine with this.

I'm kidding.

I like the idea, musashi.

I agree with this idea.

The way I see it, the amount of time you're in "crafting lag" represents the trickiest, most intricate part of the project. Clearly it doesn't actually take 45 seconds (or whatever) to make an entire shirt. That's why it's good to actually emote out the process beforehand and after the actual "so and so begins crafting a huge bong/so and so combines the rubber tubing and china teacup into a serviceable bong" message.

So feel free to way people while laying out your cloth, or while hemming the finished sleeves, or whatever. But while you're in lag, doing that tricky embroidering work, maybe you should focus all your attention on it and not actually way anyone.

I like that reasoning.

I usually emote it out before I start the actual crafting, as I feel sometimes I don't have time to finish up my emotes during the lag period. So yeah, I agree with what Cavaticus said.

Part of my issue is that crafting, particularly for crafter-class people, is a stunningly boring chore that is typically undertaken while sitting by yourself in a room with no other people even remotely nearby so that you don't spam the crap out of them while trying to improve your skills.

It's extremely lonely.

People bitch if you do it in public places where you might have a chance of actually meeting people and having some interesting RP while doing it.

It would be nice if you could at least Way your friends while you're at it.

Personally, I think that using any crafting skills should lower your stun, since you are concentrating on your crafting. Crafting a table is at least as rigorous as guarding someone or eavesdropping.

I don't really think that stun should be penalized for concentration.....

But if we're going to go ahead and penalize other concentration-heavy skills with it, might as well throw crafting in that bin too.

I like how your avatar is a petting a fish.

And I think that Cavaticus' idea works well with some crafts, but not as well with others. It works very well with the shirt crafting example, or armor crafting, or instrument making.

But I think it falls short with say, cooking ... I feel like the coded delay for heating up a piece of meat takes just about as much IC time to do, as cooking a real piece of meat takes in RL time.

I partly agree. But I think that passing out while using the Way should disrupt crafting.
