Title: Combat ideas- The difference between "hit" and "kill"
Post by: Qzzrbl on December 08, 2008, 03:14:47 PM
Alrighty then.... Once again, school boredom has spawned a nifty little idea in my head. I'm literally copying this from my notebook, onto a school computer.

Here's how it would work....

"Kil" would work exactly as it does now, by initiating automatic combat, so no real explanation is needed there.

"Hit" would work kind of how it does now with the brawl code, one hit at a time. Only it wouldn't initiate automatic combat against anything but NPCs, armed or unarmed, brawl-safe room or not.

I'm also advocating that most of our combat skills stop initiating automatic combat, with the exception of backstab.

What this would allow is more well thought out combat scenes. No longer worried about getting that mantis head and *beep* before finishing that emote, players can think and react more appropriately to what's going on in a fight. This leads to more elaborate and enjoyable fight scenes that fir their respective situations a little better.

Example:

The tall muscular man draws his sharp bone rapier with a flourish as he squares off with the stout, sinewy man.

Pointing his sharp bone rapier at his chest as he assumes a perfect fencing stance, the tall muscular man says to the stout, sinewy man in
sirihish, "Don't make me do this Amos.... You don't know what you're getting yourself into."

Pointing his obisidian rapier at him, the stout sinewy man says to the tall muscular man, "We both knew the risks Jak.... Just give it up."

Suddenly lunging forward at him with a flick of his wrist, the tall muscular man exclaims to the stout sinewy man, "Never!"

The stout sinewy man dodges the tall muscular man's pierce.

Sidestepping the his attack, the stout sinewy man takes a quick swing at the tall muscular man.

The stous sinewy man's pierce hits themtall muscular man in the head, barely grazing him.

Blood seeping from a small cut on his forehead, the tall muscular man says to the short sinewy man, "So you've gotten a little better.... Nothing's
really changed...."

And stuff like that. It'd be -just- like regular combat, with the stats and skills taken into account, but one round at a time.

Another thing this could make way for is guards knocking you upside the head when trying to get past them.

Regular walking, accidentally step in a guarded direction, you get pushed away, like it is now.

Try to sneak or run past, you warrant a club to the back of the skull. Any sort of aggression towards an NPC would result in a full on "kill" from said NPC, and maybe even a crim flag.

"kill" if you're trying to kill.

"hit" if you're just trying to hit.

I've already expressed my want for the ability to smack somebody in the mouth. It truly bothers me that our "harsh" world is very unharsh in the city. Frilly, silky, noble-dude in the Gaj ought to be worried. He needs to be worried on the way there, on the way back, and while he's there to. I think if a drunk bynner gets jealous of all those silks your wearing in the Gaj then he should be able to beat the shit out of you for no reason. Or fuck, maybe he just wants to beat the shit outta something. This would encourage mister silky to have lots of friends. I don't really see why the soldiers of either city-state give a fuck.

Now where using "hit" will be crimmed or not is another discussion.

And while I agree we could use a little more harshness in the game, I'd like to hear thoughts and opinions on the idea itself.

:)

Heh, whoops. Let me trim it down then. ;D

Yes, I very much want to be able to punch somebody in the mouth without full-on beating them down.

I like this idea. Kill would be used for serious combat while hit could be used to deal one attack at a time, to slow down combat. Some kind of information would have to be presented by the game to let us know the difference between a hit attack and a person initiating a 'kill', but hit could be useful for RP situations and for sparring, slowing things down to allow more time for emotes and dialogue.

*sigh*

I know he's a thief, because I caught him stealing from me.
He's standing here talking and I can do nothing about it because in our "harsh" world beating somebody down in the street is a great way to get insta-ganked.

*sigh*

I like this idea, basically. It'd make sparring a -shit- load more fun. Not that I hate how it is or anything, just saying...

I've once took a minion of mine, asked him for his dagger, wielded it, asked him to stand still, typed >kill minion, stabbed him in the head, typed >disengage, and he typed >disengage, after he took two swings at me.  I told him, '>tell minion Don't fuck with me again.'

I think that was my fav scene in the last year.
