Title: Sleep vs unconsciousness.
Post by: Qzzrbl on October 27, 2008, 11:10:11 PM
How come I can tell what time it is when my character is merely sleeping....

Yet can't when he's knocked out?

The human body has an internal clock, called Circadian rythym http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Circadian_rhythm (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Circadian_rhythm), that helps us keep track of the time. This is why many people can say to themselves when they sleep, tommorow I'm going to wake up at six am, and will wake up sometime around six am. I always imagine going to sleep on Armageddon is like this, and the time command lets us watch the passage so we can wake up at dawn or midday or whenever we expect out character to rise.

Being knocked unconcious, through whatever reason, is very disruptive to our senses and thus the body isn't in the same condition as merely sleeping. The body will return to conciousness when it's good and ready to do so, not at any time decided with concious thought - and so the time command is unavailable until we wake from unconciousness.

Or at least, this is always how I see it.

Circadian rhythm is awesome in how you always tend to wake up a few minutes before the alarm...Provided you weren't completely exhausted or plastered.

Bushranger, that was an awesome explanation.

My internal clock and I, we're good buddies.  At this point, I only set an alarm as a formality.

Darn you, Bushranger  >:(

I read that wiki article.  I was totally absorbed, as I work a night shift and have become much more aware of my own internal clock, until I read about the effects of long term disruption...

I've got to get a different job...

Who always wakes up before the alarm? Not me, even if I go to sleep the same time every night, before I feel especially tired. My alarm is set to go the same time every morning, yet I oversleep it frequently, to the point I can wake up 30 minutes later, it is STILL ringing, and I never heard it. Or someone shuts it off before I wake, and when I finally do wake I'm at least 1 to 2 hours after the alarm should have gone off.  I think my internal clock needs a new battery.
