Just curious, as I've just apped my first female character. How many of you tend to play a member of the opposite sex?
I finally got the balls to play a female character.
I played a male character once, but not on ARM...on a MUSH. He was skinny and small and cowardly and pined after an unattainable female character. It was fun.
Generally speaking, though, I prefer to play female characters. I'm not sure I could articulate exactly why.

Always played male characters. I have been thinking of trying a female character in the future, who knows.

They always say that at first. Malken, I'll race you to him...err...her.
I've made a couple of female characters, but they were both as ugly as I could reasonably make them. (actually, most of my male characters range from fairly ugly to completely grotesque, so it's not 100% bias)
I have, and I would again.
Guys are easier to play than girls if you want to succeed politically.
If all you care about is bank, bling, and blow, then girls are the way to go.
Played a couple of females, and it was like playing Armageddon in Easy mode.
I remember one time I had 3 dudes tripping over themselves to go hunt a certain type of incredibly dangerous monster for me...and they all died, bwahaha. My character was only about 5 hours old.

Clearly, I am not roleplaying the right kind of females, here. Teach me, sensei.

That made me lol. :)
I always play guys. I think that's mostly to do with the fact that I love my penis, and wouldn't want to give it up, even in a fantasy game.
Although in my younger years, I did play a female PC or two on different muds, but after highschool the appeal of that died out for me.
This makes me want to play a man for my next character. Apparently, I can't tap the harshness of Zalanthas without doing so. :-\
I like to play Male PC, then Female PC, then Male PC, then Female PC, I like to play buff women, gay men, weak men, strong men, weak women, etc. I really enjoy not playing the same type of character twice. So I am getting creative now.
Never played a female, most likely never will.
But hey, who knows?
I played a male half-elf once. And it was hard. Really hard. People didn't even talk to me. It was hard in more ways than I could imagine. Though, it made playing the pc easier in a way.
I also played a good looking and genial man. That actually wasn't much harder than playing a woman. Except that women are far more sexually aggressive than men. That shocked me.
I've only tried to play a female character once. I think I did all right, but it just never quite felt right to me, so I don't think I'll be doing it again in the future.
Guess I'm about half and half right now, though my two longest-lived were female.
Teh grils are just slightly easier for me to play, I think. It's as though the Female Thing gives me another roleplaying gimmick/hook on top of whatever else I've designed into the character. With a female character, I'm always conscious of what I might be doing to portray the gender; with a male character, I'm not very aware of whatever it is makes him masculine.
I've only played males... on every mud I've played in the last ~12 years. Though I have nothing against anyone else playing whatever they want to. I just have no desire to play a member of the opposite sex though as I've said I've sometimes played completely gay characters. Though most of my characters are pretty asexual.

That's interesting. I think I tend to play personality and not concern myself too much with masculinity or femininity. I guess I expect that my female characters will just automatically BE feminine...in some way. Though they are each "feminine" in their own way.
I played a female character once. Started in 'nak, had numerous guys trying to buy me drinks and asking me back to their apartments.
"Hey, how's it going?"
"Hey, see my cloak? I'm part of the militia. Yeah, it's a tough job. A manly man's job."
"I can give good sex to you. -- 'cause I'm really good at sex."
Never again.
I've played guys before. One was...incredibly girly...because I didn't know how to roleplay then.
The next few guys after him I played were BALLS TO THE WALLS MANLY MEN. They rocked out with their cock out. They did not mess around. They could have given Laurentide a run for his money.
Yeah...they all died in the arena.
I gotta play another guy again soon. Maybe a gypsy guy. I bet I could get him laid easy.
I've played one guy, for a short time. It was good, I'd do it again!
I've never played a female, but I may try it once. I've got an idea for an awesome chick that every chick I've offered it to has turned down. So it falls to me, I guess.
I've never tried but I plan to eventually.
I think it would be hilarious.
;D
I played a girl once. She didn't get laid any more than my male PCs.
:-\
I'm experienced with women (in bed, amirite gaiz?) and men pretty equally, as really when it comes down to it the two genders are more or less the same emotionally (except for some fun differences you can exploit in either case). I've not done a girl in Arm yet, but if I do she'll be a gicker, of either the very young or very old variety.

Guy characters are easy to get mudsex for. Almost as easy as girl characters.
I've only played female characters. I'm not opposed to trying a male out, that just hasn't been any of the good character concepts I've come up with yet...most likely because I think like a girl, and my concepts always come out girly.
Of note, none of the females I've played have not been girly girls...oh wait, there was one, but she was a slave and it was her JOB to be girly. All my other girls have been fighter types, going out toe to toe with the guys. I think it would be fun to play a d00d though. I'm all for it, eventually.

Edited because they have NOT been girly girls, which I evidently didn't write right the first time.

QFT.
I love playing male breeds. There is no better loner.
I have only ever played one female PC, maybe 9 or 10 years ago.
My buddies girlfriend wanted to try and play Armageddon. I was just teaching him how to play and had just wrote up his first character for him, to make sure he got approved.
So I wrote her up a character to.
This horrible of me to admit, but it was 10 years ago, so fuck it...
He still plays to this day, but SHE logged in for about 10 minutes, got bored, and never played again.
She was a ranger, with AMAZING stats. My pc was relatively new. So let my account go on hold and jumped onto her new account and played her PC.
I COULDNT LET THOSE STATS JUST SIT UNUSED. She had extremely good everything. It was perfect.
I played her for about three RL hours, got multiple offers for mudsex, it indeed was like playing Armageddon on Easy Mode, and then I stored her.
Even godly stats wouldnt let me play a female pc.
I played a F'me once. I couldn't handle the sexual advances thing so I stored her. If I ever play a woman again she's doing to be missing a few teeth and maybe an eye. She'll be Byn Sergeant who will rip your balls off....yeah.

If you think this will stop male characters from hitting on your female character, you are oh-so-wrong. In fact, I think my most-desired character so far has been an extremely tough, militaristic woman. Apparently, handing out beatdowns at the Gaj is a major turnon.

New character idea:
Andromeda, the buff, one-breasted woman.
Actually I think I'd like to write a character as a man (or woman) and then once the entire character creation is complete go back and flip all the gender pronouns in their personality, history and appearance and see how they turn out.
I've played men and women both on MUDs and I've had as many horribly rped male as female characters. Really, we're all the same under the secondary sexual characteristics. There shouldn't be too much that'll give you away, unless you slip up and do something like:
>Reaching beneath the bar, he busty blonde woman adjusts herself through a pair of sandcloth trousers.
Oh and yes, in my experience men get as much action as the ladies. And no, physical appearance has very little to do with how much your character is hit on. People are after attitude and roleplaying.
The way the conflicting information in this thread falls out, it looks less like one sex is favoured over the other, and more like casual genderbenders are more consciously aware of sexual paradigm of the opposite sex than the members of that sex.

Then don't post such statements to begin with?
I played a female once during the occupation of tuluk. I got so much stuff several changes of clothes. And people flirted with me and made innuendos all the times. I thought she was an average looker.

I'm digging playing a girl. There's less you have to worry about. Like getting your ass kicked around the Gaj, and people ganking you when you're alone.
I've been playing to many rinthi neckers and half-elfs.
The only time I was ever tempted to play a female was when I was thinking about apping a Lirathan templar. They're de-sexualized enough that I think I'd of been able to pull it off.
I wanted to play one because I've always been really curious about them, and I think they have the potential to be some of the most awesome, ass-clenchingly terrifying characters in all of Zalanthas. But, then again, that's true of any templar, when you think about.
I haven't played a guy yet simply because I feel Zalanthas doesn't have enough female PCs as it is. If I did, the only character I would play as a male would be a half-giant, 'cause the concept of playing a huge jiggly female HG doesn't really do it for me.

I generally play one female character every two or three male characters.
Haven't played a female character... yet.
I figure I'll give it a try sometime. Then I can ask my girlfriend for RP advice!

Mmm, pedobait.
Only sometimes.
Quite often, regardless of where I'm RPing. I find it difficult to RP my own gender at times...
Makes you wonder, don't it?
Never. I've animated NPCs that are females many times. However I just don't know if I could handle males flirting/coming onto my PC (I'm a heterosexual male). But also I wouldn't want to avoid sexual situations my pc might get into just because I didn't want to be exposed to them as a player.
Also I'm not sure I could think like a female. Maybe I could try it (make someone that has some reason not to have a sexual relationship).

I've considered it before, but then I think about it and I don't feel there's anything that would really put that much of a spin on things by playing a woman instead of a man here on Armageddon, besides the gender of the individuals trying to sleep with the given character.
The sexes are supposed to be equal, so there's allegedly no difference. I'm sure I could do it, and do it believably, but I just don't see the necessity with any given concept, except perhaps if I was tempted to play a Lirathan templar.

Oh, people will treat you differently, though it's mainly under the very reason you mentioned. But also, gender equality is more on the physical side. Personality traits, I believe, would still be different. In other words, nobody's gonna say women are weak, or men are all brutes. There are strong women, and weak men, just like in real life. Only in arm, that concept is universally recognized.... But, friendships are bound to be different.
Nope.
