Title: Disabled characters?
Post by: Silent J on April 25, 2008, 04:29:52 PM

My brother has started playing, and he brought up an interesting idea- blind/mute/deaf characters. So, q&a.

1. could blind characters be implemented? Interesting, but no feasible, probably.

2. mute characters seem the easiest- could another "language" (signs) be added to the game, that mute characters would speak? Linguists and such would be able to understand them, with training.

3. Could deaf characters be added, with sign language, just like 2?

There is blind, deaf, and mute code for the game. Go ahead and app for one if you want, but I don't recommend it - ignoring the appropriate abilities is a lot easier, since there are frankly cues that a blind/deaf person would pick up that the game just can't simulate well.

You can play a blind character with no additional coding required. Just assume that the information you get through the 'look' command is coming in through your other senses, and moderate your own play so that you act realistically. There have been a handful of very neat characters in Armageddon who were blind.

Muteness could be pretty easy, since there are game effects that already 'mute' you. I bet an imm could slap a permanent version on you.

Deafness + sign language is probably reaching a little too far, though.

I played a pc that became codedly deaf for the last few months of his life. It was fun at first, but as I began to go deeper into how that would affect the character, it began to affect me and I stopped enjoying them.

There is a very awesome blind character being played currently(If she isn't dead).

I played a mute once, or well he bit off his own tongue after IC events.
I have seen all three before, all good RPers too. Adds flavor.

What's also fun is playing a character with mental disorder, such as schizophrenia or what-not. I tried that and it was a lot of fun.

I played a blind guy that wasn't coded, was fun but could suck at times. I use looked to pick up certain things, what wearing(would pretend hear leather moving etc). Playing someone with a problem like that can be challenging and frustrating. But fun too when try to figure out how to react, I also used other senses(I could ID people hidden in cloaks and masks, due to voice).

I believe that you can ask the staff to afflict you with a permanent "blindness" spell to simulate the effect.

And really... if you're playing a blind character, shouldn't you?  Sometimes I get tired of seeing blind swordsman-like badasses.  Being blind is horribly detrimental and the astounding amount of characters that "make up for it with other senses" is utterly amazing.

Yeah yeah, just a game, blah blah blah...

The blindness code makes the game pretty much unplayable, though.  There's no coded way to distinguish voices or other sounds that would let you know what's around you.

Sign language has existed on Arm 1 before, though I'm pretty sure use of it now would be pretty far against the rules.  It was something an old elven tribe did for a while using a whole bunch of triggers and aliases.  Like I said, not exactly legal anymore.  But it was kind of neat.

I wanted my character to be one eyed and one legged but the guy introducing me to the game said it would be a bit harsh for my first character.

So I settled for 1 eye. :3

I don't think it'd be against the rules as long as it really was a sort of code, where only your character and those he/she has taught knows what each sign means.  Just emote the signs.  I know there are a few clans (at least) with systems of hand gestures that mean certain things, so I can't see how an extensive hand gesture system would be against the rules.  I suppose it'd just be kind of a pain to set up and learn.

Though, setting up triggers and aliases to do it for you would likely be against the rules.
